US Team Finals Qualification Times

Roger,
The NFFS website has  posted the finals qualification times.   The information is current up to the end of Jan, 2008.   Contests held after the Maxmen are not included.   I urge those involved to check their scores and report to me any discrepancies with their records or recollections.  Approximately half of those entered in the program have already qualified for the finals.   In 2007 reports from 34 contests were received.  So far in 2008, 6 contests reports have been processed.   Contestant numbers range from a high of 76 in the F1A-B-C events to a low of one (1).   Believe it or not, at least one contest held in California had a single person competing in the FAI events.

How good is Jan 08 Super Sport ?

Ross Jahnke asked ...
>I just purchased 10 lbs. of January 08 Super Sport. Is there any
> energy storage data on this batch?

I only have tested 5 motors of that batch, seems to be about the same
as the previous two batches from 2007. The temperature corrected
energy return values that I got were 3576 kg*cm for a 30 gram motor
(Eimar's stretch method). Some other values:

Jan 08: 3576
Jun 07: 3538
Apr 04: 3730 (the best SS that I have tested)
Jul 02: 3824 (Tan2)
May 99: 3934 (best Tan2)

The standard deviation of energy returns for Jan08 was 0.8%, which is
about the same as for other rubber that I have tested.

As an editorial comment - we have observed that Super Sport seems to improve with age, more than Tan 2 did.

F1P Astro Star Project

The Astro Star Jr project in addition to providing  10 free kits to Jr flyers has donated $1000 to the Jr FF team. Bob VanNest wishes to express thanks to the many people  that were part of putting together the program, designing the F1P Astro Star and producing  this fine kit. The names are numerous but you know who you are. He also wishes to thank the flyers that bought the Astro Star kits. This is a great example of tangible help to the very deserving Jrs that have represented the USA in such a great way at the last several Jr World Championships.

Bob  VanNest would like to know if there is enough interest in producing another 25 Astro Star kits. Please drop him a line and let him know. This is not a firm commitment but just a quick survey to see.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob and Nora at this time, Nora should be back at home from the hospital. She took a fall in thier home and broke her leg.

USA Junior Team Fund Raising

Hi Roger. I am pleased to announce that the Junior Team has reached
Jon Davis's challenge of $1500, and are awaiting Mr. Davis's check.
Many thanks to John Oldencamp, Tom Vaccaro, Ed Carroll, Jack Emery,
The Detroit Balsa Bugs, Norm Furutani, Al Ulm, Ken Bauer, Martyn
Cowley, and Martin and Aimee Schroedter, we easily exceeded our goal.
As a matter of fact, we have another $1000.00 challenge on the table
from Bob Van Nest, and have received $525.00 toward that goal. Thanks
to everyone's help we are getting this thing done.

George Batiuk,

I about had a seizure when I read the following essay!
despite all the camouflaging verbiage, reverse psychology, the actual

Ohhh! How fiendishly clever!I don't care how much advantage is
gained by a guy building his own airplanes, we gotta stick by the
age-old rules!

Let's rise as one voice and infli...I mean extend the BOM to FAI!
