53 Wakefield Flyoff Rescheduled
From: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
The re-enactment of the 1953 Wakefield Cup flyoff, planned for
the Isaacson Winter Classic contest in February, was blown out
by rain and wind on Saturday, and 20+ knot winds on Sunday.
The event has been rescheduled and will now take place at the
San Valeers Annual at Lost Hills Saturday, April 14, at 09:00 ,
with a rain/wind make-up date of Sunday April 15 at the s
same time.
The 1953 flyoff was the first flyoff in Wakefield history.
Joe Foster’s winning “Power-to-Weight” will be flown by Hal Cover,
second place Hugh O’Donnell’s “Maxie” by Bernie Crowe, and
Eliseo Scotto’s “X-5” by Juan Livotto. All planes will be
flown to the 8-oz rule and will be launched Rise-Off-Ground.
See you there.
SCAT ANNUAL 2007 report
From: Lee Hines
The 2007 SCAT ANNUAL is now history.
As CD, I can tell you it was quite a success, especially when
judged against last years highly weather challenged event!
Sunny & the warmest days of the year[locals told me]led to
mild, low breezes & good lift flying conditions, for the most part.
We did have a 3 hours windy period on Sunday AM.
This meant we were able to shift to our western flight line
for the early F1A Flyoff.
At 15mph, the gliders were landing in or near that first old pit
area, east of our normal car park area.
This is about a mile of drift, I reckon. Not bad, as they
stayed on field property, not across Holloway Rd.
Even so, some, if not all, of the five fliers had their
gliders go OOS down low behind rises.
BTW, I am told the knoll east of the parking area is to
be leveled. That would be a boon to all of our fliers!
We stayed on the west side all day, as the breeze
dropped to nil by 11AM.
Boomers were around, with several planes going OOS UP!
Glad to say, most were later found.
In fact, I had a low battery non-function flight in round 5 of F1H,
which stayed overhead for 30 minutes!
Finally it came down after some 40 minutes, just south of the
central car park area.
In attendance from out of state was Andrew Barron, Tony Robertson,
Chas Jones, the Brocks, Dick Wood, Willard Smitz, Ron McBurnett
& Blake Jensen[nearly a regular @ LH].
We were pleased to have two new junior fliers join us.
Taron & Sevak Malkhasyan flew Cat Glider, F1H & Coupe with
obvious joy & vigor! Congratulations to Sevak, who won the
coveted Junior Hi-Time trophy.
We do hope they come again.
It was a shame that no one flew F1J nor F1P on such a
nice weekend. What gives guys?
Before I sign off, a very BIG THANK YOU to all the
kind volunteers who helped make the 2007 SCAT ANNUAL
such a successful contest!
I could not have done without Merry Smith, Sharon Emery,
Mike Szura, Bob Norton & Susanna Diez at control central.
Thanks also to Pierre Brun for so ably handling the flyoffs.
Lastly, thanks to the Prez, Jim Parker, for his leadership
& organization role.
Yr hmbl CD srvnt,
Lee Hines
