AmCup and Jr Team Results
Apologies to all for the lapse in reporting but change of jobs and a house remodel pushed modeling to a lower priority. I hope Roger gets this out before departing for the Ukraine and the World Champs.
Almost a third thru the season. No Lost Hills AmCup contest until October. The central and east contests are starting. Denver in July and don't forget the cool Tangent Oregon contests in August, two AmCup contests in 3 days.
No first place changes other than in F1J-- alarmingly small attendance and several no-flyer contests. Faust Parker took the lead being the only flyer with two AmCup scores.
SCAT will be discussing the "60 day" tie breaker rule. The current 2007 rule:
6) Contest ties must be settled, or else the competitors receive the lowest score possible. For example, if three tie for first place and the ties are not settled, then each of the three receives the third place score (15 points). If two tie for fourth place and no settlement, each receives 5 points. If five or more max out with no fly-offs, then each receives 5 points. Bonus points are added to the above scores.
Contest ties are to be broken in a sporting manner, in which the event’s models are flown. A single “flyoff” flight or the results of a future contest are the preferred methods for tiebreakers. The sportsmen are responsible for arranging a suitable tiebreaker. The results of the tiebreaker are to be documented in writing (e-mail), and agreed upon by the participants. If attempts at breaking the tie are ultimately unsuccessful, the America’s Cup Committee is responsible for adjudication. Ties must be broken within 60 days of the contest or by the conclusion of the first AmCup contest of the following year, whichever is sooner, or the scores will remain as ties with the lower score recorded. [end of rule 6]
The AmCup rules specifies it is the flyers responsibility to break the tie in a sportsman like manner within 60 days. The time limit is in place so that those "chasing AmCup points" can have a degree of certainty and don't have to worry about a sleeping tie being broken at the end of the year to change the final standings. SCAT "adjudicated" several times. For example, days extension to the 60 days have been given to accommodate a planned contest date to break a tie. Several years ago , a large (~12) flyer fly off for the MaxMen was coordinated by the flyers and allowed to be done in October. The last example is a recent request for a second extension was denied. Also note, the original rule was a 30 day limit and was changed to 60 days 2 years ago.
Points of Discuss:
- Should the rule be more flexible for situations in which long distance traveled to a contests for getting together for a fly-off is difficult / costly?
- Should Fly-offs be flown in less than ideal conditions? Should the contestant's be asked their preference?- - Do we option out too easily on fly-offs and so are the USA flyers less experienced in poor conditions? Does forcing a fly-off in poor conditions result in a fair result? Should the AmCup system try to regulate? Shape?
Some options discussed to date:
1. No change, extensions on a case by case basis
2. Change to 90, 120 day etc
3. No limit up to a cut off date, say end of October and then the 60 day limit.
SCAT will discuss this and other AmCup issue over the next several months. At our annual Holiday party in December, changes for the 2008 rules will be made. Non-SCAT members are welcome to voice their views.
JR Team Scores. Remember all Jr scores are recorded until the Pre-Nats / Nats. There after only those officially entered into the Jr Team Selection Program will be reported. I'm hoping several young flyers have taken Walt Ghio up on his F1B Jr development program and will be ready to fly out the PreNats / Nats. Remember, The PreNats / Nats are required to make the Jr team. The AmCup portion of the team selection can be done through the end of the year. See the NFFs web site for the official program or Contact AMA, Competition department. At this point, 200 points is the maximum from two AmCup contests. Another 200 points, 100 points from each of the Pre-Nats and Nats. will be added. Total maximum points is 400. Remember that the AmCup ( and Jr Plus) contests can be flown and scores counted after the Nats.

Friday afternoon the four F1E contestants had excellent flying conditions. We ended up flying in several different directions because of the changing wind. One problem was the heat. At one point it was 115 degrees in the sun. Brian VanNest had two maxes for the eight rounds of flying and come home the winner. Norm Furutani was second followed by Dave Parsons. Richard Wood was again flying an F1B model with an F1E rudder in the nose of the motor tube. A new bigger model is in the works and should be at the next contest.
We woke up to a very pleasant Saturday morning. Light winds and big thermals made for great flying conditions during the day. Three F1A flyers, four F1B flyers and two F1C flyers maxed out and made the flyoff. Mike Roberts dropped 11 seconds in the fourth round was third in F1C. Cody Secor maxed out in F1P and was the winner followed by Tony Robertson and Randy Secor.
The breeze was starting to pick up at 5pm when the flyoffs were scheduled to start and a decision was made to hold off the flyoffs till Sunday morning. They would be incorporated with Big Al’s Shootout.
The Shootout was planned to start at 6:30 AM. At 6 AM the wind was from the West at over 15 mph. This continued the rest of the day. The contestants along with myself decided it was not a good day for flyoffs or Big Al’s Shootout. All flyoffs will be held at the Livotto contest in October.
The F1GHJQ contest started on time at 10am. Big thermals along with the West wind were taking some of the small models on long flights. At the end of the day only Richard Wood had maxed out in F1G. No flyers had entered F1J and Frank Pollard put up only one flight if F1Q. Five F1H flyers braved the stiff breeze with Jim Parker winning for the second year in a row. Junior flyer, Taron Malkhasyan made several excellent flights in the difficult conditions with a straight tow glider.
I would like to thank Inky Davis for helping me all day Saturday. Also a big thank you for Ron McBurnett who had made up and sold Bissonnette Memorial T-Shirts again this year.

Now for some easy rules:
Any 12" span cat glider, weight 10 grams min.
Launcher per AMA CLG rules[6" handle, 18" rubber, etc]
Flying will be MASS LAUNCH STYLE, probably in eliminator heats.
If any fliers in a heat do 120 sec they will continue to fly.
Time one, fly one, as usual.
So build one or two[they are easy!], bring your stopwatches & join the FUN!
'Luddite Dan' Berry made a nice perpetual trophy for 'Beat the Vart'.
Other prizes are in the offing, I am told by a person to be named later.
Stay tuned, & get to BUILDING some 12" Catapults!
See you at the NATS,
Leeper, the Fun Meister
