Hi Roger,
A report from Down Under
20 years ago the Brisbane Free Flight introduced a Coupe d'Hiver event called the Big Bird Contest with a beautiful porcelain stylised bird mounted on a wooden base as a perpetual trophy. This event has been run each year attracting close to 20 entries on many occasions. This year there were 16 entries. The event is run as close as possible to Bastille day in accordance with this class originating in France. This year we were faced with cold windy conditions with wind speed between 5 and 7 metres per second. The sponsors of the event are Pieta deVisser and his wife Julie. Julie contest directs the event and always makes a cake, provides tea and coffee and on occasions provides champage (to drug the opposition - I speak from experience). High quality prizes and are awarded to 6th place. This year the deVissers produced stickers for each competitor to mark the 20 year anniversary. Competitors are also issued with competition numbers to wear on the day. From our point of view this is the top Coupe event in Australia and certainly attracts the largest field of competitors in this category. Fittingly, Pieter won the event this year which is just reward for the 20 year's devotion to running this class. The Big Bird rules encourage BOM and specify no gadget models (no VIT,A/R,WW delayed prop etc) except for a DT. First round is a 3 minute super max with 120 seconds counted and the remaining 60 seconds kept in reserve to decide a flyoff. Results are as follows:
