USA Junior Team Selection

What a pleasure it was to watch the Jr Pre-Nats this year and what fun fly with these young flyers and yes to be beat by several of them at the NATs in F1A. Following are the current standings. There are two caveats. The first is the NATs scores are unofficial. I made a few assumptions to adjust the total scores for the Jr rule that extended flight times are not counted. The other is these are not the final scores, the Jr team has not been selected.

With only three competing in F1B, this team looks predictable. The two returning F1P team members, Evan Simons and John Shailor with a surprise start at the preNats of Michelle Radziunas by the urging of the “old, experienced” ex-Jr team member and sister Sara, flew well. Michele will need to add good Amrerica’s Cup performances to qualify for the team.
There were four F1P flyers at the Nats but Cody Secor will be flying at the Jr World Champions in the Ukraine as the defending Jr World Champion. The two other members of the gold medal team, Anthony Ferrario and Brian Pacelli will be welcoming “rookie", Chinmay Jaju. Chinmay, like Michelle, now he needs to supplement his good Muncie scores with strong showings in America’s Cup competition. The F1A is not so settled. There are 12 AmCup contests and two Jr Plus contests to be flown which will decide the final top three positions in F1A. Only 2.68 points (29 seconds over their best two America’s Cup contests) separate the first thru fifth places after the PreNats and Nats. The order of the fliers based solely on the events in Muncie is Timothy Barron, Logan Tetrick, Oliver Cai, Kyle Jones, and Miles Johnson. Because the performance of these fliers in these remaining 14 contests will decide who will make the team and who does not, it is critically important that the normal high standards of performance be maintained in these events. Adult fliers must try their best to win and CDs must not reduce maxes to make the flying easier. The standard of performance must remain high to protect the fairness of the competition for all the fliers. Questionably, each and everyone of these fliers could represent us well at next summer’s World Championships.

As previously written, only the Jrs that flew at the PreNats and Nats will now be reported.

If the Jr standings do not publish to SEN, check the NFFs website, Junior Section over the next few days. You may also contact me and I'll email the the EXCEL spreadsheet of the Jr score sheet. Comments and corrects welcomed: Jim Parker  This email address is being protected from spambots. Aug 2007  AmCup Results - Jim Parker

Andrew Barron took the lead by being only max-out win at the NATs doing this while helping 5 other Barrons flying F1A!  With 13 remaining contest left this year, several are plotting their plans to steal away his lead.

Eddy Vanlanding has the lead but 101 points most likely will not hold up. Blake Jensen, in second, come from behind in the last contest of the season to take the lead from Eddy in 2006.  Cross- flyer Aram Schlosberg is in third with three wins.  Charlie Jones looks to be in contention again. Alex Andriukov is positioned well with two 30 point contests, both at Lost Hills so he’ll have to do some traveling   in the USA and Canada to win.

Ed Carroll keeps his F1C lead but Faust Parker is bouncing back with his new knees into second.  Matt Gewain and Norm Poti are tie for third , well within striking distance.

The F1P Jr  terrific trio, Secor, Ferrario, Pacelli, are in the lead. An ever increasing number of open flyers are flying now.  Don’t forget the new Jr, coming on strong, Chinmay Jaju.

Like his lead in F1B,  Eddy Vanlandingham’s lead in F1G looks soft. Dick Wood is back on the AmCup circuit and is second place. Then follows a gaggle of flyers with a single win score.

Norm Smith as been on the road with his support crew, Merry, and is tied with perennial top placing  F1H sportsman, Brian VanNest.

Faust Parker is looking good  in F1J with 105 points. Jean Pailet may be thinking otherwise.

The  provision electric event, F1Q is growing steadily. Frank Pollard is in the lead but this may change when I straighten out the NATs scores Dick J Ivers and Dick A Ivers were posted-- father /son or scoring error. Please educate me.

The other provisional event, F1E. Peter Brocks is in the lead. He has found a great looking hill in Flagstaff AZ.   To help the growth of this event, SCAT  will wave the  25$ sanction fee if the F1E contest is ‘associated’ with a current flat land Am Cup sanctioned contest, F1E need not be flown  at the same location nor the same date.

We're still missing a few 2007 Sanction fees. Please send  check payable to SCAT, mail to Jim Parker, 9524 Ruffner Ave ,Northridge CA 91343

More LiPoly

Li-poly is starting to appear in full-size aviation. The prime example
is the Antares 20E, a 20m span self-launching glider. The motor is a
pop-up, pylon mounted 42 kW 1600 rpm brushless outrunner. It has a 2m
diameter two blade prop that's driven at up to 1600 rpm. Power comes
from Li-poly batteries in the wings. I've seen one in action: it was
most impressive. It took off in well under half the distance an
ASW-22BLE needed with no noise apart from a fluttering sound from the
prop tips and climbed out much faster. The ASW-22BLE is a state of the
art 26.5m span IC powered self-launcher. The manufacturer, Lange
Flugzugbau GMBH

www.lange-flugzeugbau.de

claims that its initial climb rate is 900 fpm and it can climb 3000m on
a full charge.

With that as background, and with the news reports of laptop fires and
the occasional exploding mobile phone you'll not be surprised to know
that there has been some discussion about Li-Poly on
rec.aviation.soaring.

It appears that there's no such thing as a "standard Li-Poly" cell.
Different sources use slightly different construction and different
chemistries. Some are less likely to explode than others and the max
discharge rates and capacities vary, not necessarily in line with cost.

"The newest lithium-nanophosphate cells do not release oxygen and thus
do not burn or explode although they can be damaged by overcharging.
Cells made by A123 Systems, Saft, Valence and others are more than safe
enough for use in aircraft or cars. They have a little less energy
capacity than the old chemistry but they make up for it with fast
charging and long life. They can typically manage a 20C discharge rate
without harm - that's 200 amps for a 10 AH battery. Admittedly, you
don't want to short that."
- Bill Daniels

Bill is one of the good guys on r.a.s. If you want to see the rest of
this discussion about the pros and cons of various Li-Poly types,
safety, etc., look at the "Electrically Powered Ultralight Aircraft"
thread in rec.aviation.soaring - use Google Groups to find it if you
don't have a newsreader.

Martin Gregorie.

Parker on Polys
EOB,

I have been transitioning from NiHi to LiPoly. Here's some info.

Batteries  all 7.4 volts nominal-- note, at full charge they are typically near
8.4 volts. Range from $16 to $20 :

-  home build pack from 4,  E-Tec , 210mah  resulting in 420 mah

-  M&K use the ETec 7.4V300 HP, currently out of stock

http://www.allerc.com/product_info.php?cPath=3_4_69&products_id=1790

- PQ-300XP-2S  close equivalent to the above:

http://www.robotcombat.com/marketplace_lipoly-pq.html

- Shorter thicker pack, fits when in the fuselage nose, True RC 350 mah.

http://home.comcast.net/~truerc/ready_pack/ready_packs.htm   unfortunately
on back order for several months

I've used 2 regulators, these are from RC companies- goggle search will find them.
I replace the wire with smaller wire- we don't put near the amp draw as the
RC guys do:

FMA Direct, VRLi1-LPO Sport-- I replaced the 3 leds with smaller ones.  Nice
eature is the LEDs provide battery condition- Green- Yellow- Red.  Out puts 5v

I'm currently using Novak #5460, has an "on" LED. bit smaller. I like it that it
outs puts 6v

What I have not found  yet is a regulator with a built in low voltage cut off.
Very interested if one exsists!

I've ruined 2 packs by letting them run below 3 volts. One of these cell I thought
I had saved by doing several short charges and letting it sit a day before doing
the full charge. All seemed well. Two weeks later I went to the battery bag
and noticed that one of the cells  had "puff- fished". Lucky it was not in a
model and luckier it did not leak or even more flash burn.  It seems it is difficult
to get LiPo to torch off but when they do they are very dangerous. I saw a film
of a  guy who set up a test to torch one off, commands respect.  I'm being
even more careful. I'm dealing with relatively small stuff- can not
magine what happen if you make a mistake with a 2500 mah pack.

While on the subject of depleted batteries,  I will mention everyone should
check the current drain on older Black Magic timers. There are some very
small resistors on this timer and if not properly soldered, the timer does not
shut down after DT, in fact the current drain goes up, as much as 85 mah!
So a 300 mah battery is good for only  3 1/2 hrs in the post DT condition.
If you've been flying the model all day, the power drain is higher, Now combine
this with running my transmitter off and RDT off the same LiPo battery.   The
model lands in plowed field, I have a strong transmitter signal. I go back to the
flight line. When I return,  no signal, I'm sure the model was stolen by field
workers. Fortunately, Peter Allnut insisted we take another try the next
morning using his new Kenwood radio, Still no signal. More fortune-- Dale
Elders come out. We  discuss the terrain and what he saw in the binoculars
and says "is that red tip yours?", 100 m away, there the model sat, with a
dead 420 mah battery.  Hence forth the discovery of the high current draw
timer

I've also posted this on the NFFS website- forum FAI Models
