2006 Bissonnette Memorial Contest Report
=========================================
First off I would like to thank all the flyers, flyers wives
and supporters who helped with the timing of the flyoffs and
Big Al's Shootout. Without your help we would not have had
a successful contest. Also a big thank you for Ron
McBurnett who had made up and sold Bissonnette Memorial T-
Shirts.
Friday afternoon the four F1E contestants had excellent
conditions flying from the North end of the hill. Brian
VanNest started out the contest with two maxes and held the
lead through out the contest. It was a very close
competition between Peter Brocks and Dave Parsons for second
and third place. Peter won out by one second. Ed Carroll
flew his first F1E contest and enjoyed the experience.
Friday evening the Champagne Flyoff Contest for F1ABC
started out with good conditions and then the Lost Hills
breeze started up. Most of the flyers lost interest in
flying and it was decided to not have the flyoff flights.
Several flyers did continue with Dick Mathis making seven
maxes in F1C and Randy Weiler 8 seconds down from a perfect
score in F1A. They did enjoy the champagne.
We woke up to a very pleasant Saturday morning. Light winds
and big thermals made for great flying conditions during the
morning rounds. In the afternoon the conditions turned a
little turbulent along with big thermals. The light winds
along with periods of gusty winds made for difficult
conditions. Matt Gwain was flying his new F1C folder model
with excellent results.
Three F1A flyers and three F1C flyers maxed out and made the
flyoff. In F1B only George Batiuk made the seven maxes.
Alex Andriukov came in second and Richard Wood third.
Cody Secor was the only entry in F1P. I will continue to
hold this Junior event in the future to help promote it.
The breeze was starting to pick up at 5pm when the flyoffs
were scheduled to start and a decision was made to hold off
the rest of the flyoffs till Sunday morning. They would be
incorporated with Big Al's Shootout.
The Shootout started as planned at 6:30 AM with a very light
drift to the East. The format is a ten-minute flying
window, with ten minutes between events to organize the
timers. High time in F1A for the first round was 277
seconds by Mike McKeever. A very close second and third was
Jim Parker at 276 seconds and Michael Thompson at 272
seconds. In the second round Mike, Jim and Michael made the
300 second max which made Mike McKeever the winner. The
Saturday contest was decided by these flights with Mike
winning out over Jim and Michael.
In F1B Bob Piserchio make 418 seconds for the high time in
the first round with Bob Tymchek second with a flight of 397
seconds. In the second round Bob Tymchek made 360 seconds
for a total of 757 seconds and the win. Bob Piserchio
flight was 240 seconds with a total of 658 seconds for
second place. Alex Andriukov came in third with a total of
575 seconds.
F1C was interesting in that Randy Archer and Roger Simpson
were flying folder models. Randy had a flight of 501
seconds for high time in the first round. Roger's flight
was 465 seconds and both Lynn Pulley and Dick Mathis making
459 seconds. In the second round Randy did not fly. Roger
and Lynn made the 360 second max for first and second place.
Dick Mathis was seven seconds short of the max for third
place. The Saturday contest was decided by these flight
with Randy winning. Dick was second and Ron McBurnett
third.
The Shootout is a take off of the Champagne flyoffs that
were held at Taft in the 70's and 80's. Again, it was well
received by the contestants and will be held again next
year.
The F1GHJ contest started on time at 10am. Big thermals
were taking some of the small models on long flights. At
the end of the day four flyers had maxed out in F1G and F1H.
F1G flyer Mark Belfield flying in his very first contest was
one of those who had maxed out. In F1J Randy Archer and
Terry Kerger were the only two to make the flyoff and
decided to hold the flyoff at a later date. It was decided
that the flyoff window would be five minutes and that the
flight time for the first round was 180 seconds. F1H was
held first with Jim Parker the only flyer making the max.
Mike McKeever was second and Brian VanNest third. All four
flyers made the max in F1G. In the second flyoff round Mark
made 103 seconds for fourth place and Tiffaney O'Dell made
143 seconds for third place. Jack Emery and Peter Brocks
made the max and both lost their models. Jack decided to
give up the chase and go home due to a planned trip the next
day. Peter made a flight of 132 seconds for the win. Peter
stayed over till Monday and went looking for his F1G model.
With the help of the transmitter he was able to find it
approximately six miles from the flight line.

Another weekend contest another maxout, and champagne flyoff..right?
Think again.
The Magnificent Mountain Men Annual 14-Rounder was born in 1979. Since that
time, only THREE sportsmen have ever posted a perfect 14-round maxout.
Ask Jim Bradley (1988), George Batiuk (2001), and Pete McQuade (2004) about
it sometime. How did they do it? And how rewarding was the experience?
Maybe the other 400+ entries who tried and came up short were too distracted
by our distant snow-capped peaks or the pronghorn antelope on MMM's 35
square-mile field.

Flying at Baikonur, Kazakhstan?

I am on the US Spacemodeling World Championship team to compete in the World
Spacemodeling Champs at Baikonur, Kazakhstan, in late September this year.
I have gotten the impression that FF comps are also flown there
occasionally.
Have any of our wide-flung community flown there or know people that have
flown there?
TIA!

P.S. After rockets this summer, I'm back to FF next year!

than 1/3 of it's thickness.
I personally have not used it... I'm on the US S8E/P Rocket Glider
Spacemodeling Team and had sent it off to one of my teammates so he could
get some altitudes on some of his boosts. He liked it a lot and will be
buying his own, so I've gotten it back.
I'll be flying it (and comparing it to the RAM2 unit) later this month.

Flying F1A at Muncie
I enjoyed Peter Brock's narrative of his F1G fly-away at Lost Hills so I
thought to share a similar experience at Muncie a few weeks ago at the Hoosier
Cup. As the rounds went into the late morning, the evidence of a strong
thermal building was obvious by the stunts my F1A was performing while circle
towing. When the time was right, I made a less-than-artful launch (it looped
instead of bunting), but the air was right and soon the model was soaring
higher than any seen up to that time. The DT went at 3:09, but the stab did
not go all the way and the model started a tight loop, sometimes sideways and
sometimes vertical. However, it was coming down slowly, but right over the
biggest of the temporary ponds on the field. I was hoping it would stay up
just long enough to avoid the water. When it was less than 50 meters up, the
thermal strengthened and slowly took the looping model up and away; a speck in
the sky after about 20 minutes total flight. I was on my bike but couldn't
follow it through the woods.
After returning to the flight line, I assembled my Walston receiver and got
a strong signal, indicating the model was still airborne after 30 minutes.
I appointed the timers to record the scores on the tally sheet so I could
temporarily abandon my CD responsibility to start a search with the help of
Paul Masterman and a map of the Muncie area. The main concern for retrieval
was the reservoir about 3 miles to the south of the lauch site, the direction
in which the model was last seen traveling. A bit of dead-reckoning led to a
cross-road off US-35 and a mile of travel to the east. What a relief when
we got out of the car and turned on the receiver. The signal indicated less
than =C2=BD-mile to the model. After a bit of triangulation, we talked to some
friendly locals to get permission to search through the rough between the
plowed fields. The model was spotted by Paul about 40 ft up in a tree. Less than
30 minutes had expired since we left the International Aeromodeling Center
for the search. For once, my long pole was able to knock the model out of
the tree without damage. Curiously, it descended in a proper F1A DT spin.
Nonetheless, it was put away for the rest of the day for an intense diagnosis
and cure when I got home.
The landing spot was less than a half mile from the aforementioned reservoir.

Peter's Big AL drama & good lessons
====================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Yes Peter,
Turning on the receiver was the key word in my mind as I read
your Coupe's retrieval story. Of course timing the duration of
signal is quite useful, as you stated.
IF I had even taken my rcvr last Sept when chasing my
AL STAR F1A glider[DTed!]in huge lift, I might have been
able to rescue it before it was consumed by the brushfire,
where it almost surely had DTed into the burning acreage!
BTW, A $1000 error, obviously.
Now my rule is to turn on my rcvr when retrieving my comp flights.
I feel almost sheepish, as I have no drama flights to relate from
the Big AL event...I flew, missed 2 maxes, did not have any
damage, put the birds back in nest, went home...boring!
But I do have a tag line: My replacement AL STAR trimmed
out ready for prime time today...in 4 flights!
Also boring!
What to do now?
Twiddle my fingers?
No, I am making 12" span CLGs for the NATS FUN FLY[plug].
They are harder to adjust than A2s!
Ciao from,

Hi:
I am in the process of covering and finishing a 1/2 a original kit of

I know is one of the most famous power model, but no experience.
Any help will be welcome.

Foreigners at World Cup Contests
=================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Roger's "Tale of Two Contests" was interesting, articulating his
experience with the designated timer per pole system which is
used in Europe and probably on other continents as well. In the
States, with the exception of the Finals, we use a gentlemen's
agreement approach and time each other.
The designated timer per pole drawbacks are the quality of timers
and pole overloading (with more than four fliers).
As FAI encourages foreign participation at World Cup events, it
should also consider the means to accommodate such fliers.
Some possibilities are:
First, allow foreigners to time as well. Family members or friends
who might accompany a foreign competitor frequently have con-
siderable free flight exposure as well as timing experience. Another
pool of potential timers are foreigner who might be flying on another
day. (The entry fees could be skipped in uch cases).
Second, encourage organizers to designate, in advance, a liaison
or liaisons with the foreign fliers. Foreign language knowledge is a
prerequisite, obviously. The liaison(s) should be on the flying line
during the whole contest, assuring that the organizer's instructions
are well understood and assisting the foreigners whenever possible.
(They are, by definition, in a disadvantage). A liaison should carry
a badge clearly indicating his/her role. To me, this would be a great
opportunity to assist and get to know some of the foreign fliers.
And finally, consider adding the number of poles per event to a
World Cup report. Contests with an average of more than four flier
per pole will clearly be less attractive to foreign fliers the next time
around.

Haught Stuff for Sale at Intercities Meet
At the upcoming Intercities contest in Muncie Juen 16-18, I'll be selling
off some excess FF stuff -- with a portion of the proceeds going to SEN.
Here's the kind of thing I'm looking to move:
"Big box o'balsa" -- an old SIG box roughly 12 x 18 x 36, full of sheet
balsa from 1/32 to 3/8, all grades. Also a bunch of sticks, spruce, TE
stock, etc. -- $100/lot
Nikon Action 8x40 bonoculars -- barely used -- $50
Audio tach -- barely used, purchased a couple years ago from Doug G. -- $100
Bag o' TD .020 engines -- $100/lot (4 engines + a bunch of parts)
Prather prop pitch gauge -- like new $25
Seelig Minicombos -- modified for F1J use/used -- $20 each
Verbitsky F1J props -- mainly 2002-3-4 vintage -- $20 apiece
Box o'Tatone, KSB, and Kmart timers -- several of each, plus some vintage
unused stuff and many parts -- $100
Target version/ripoff of EZ-Up Sun shade -- used once -- $50
I'm sure there will be other odds & ends I've forgotten about. I don't want
to break the stuff marked "lot," so reach in them jeans, and pull out them
greens (it's cash only)and help celebrate my retirement from FF competition!

SkyScraper International Challenge results plus EUSFFC notice

Free Flighters,
Here below are of the Skyscraper Challenge results from last week plus
reminder of the Eastern U.S. Free Flight champs this coming weekend at
Barron Field.
We had a superb weekend May 27 and 28 for the Skyscraper Challenge, with
light and variable winds both days. Losts of flying in FAI, also a fun
time of flying in AMA, Nostalgia, Old Timer and FAC.
Especially noteworthy is Ben Thomson maxing out to win F1A against a
strong field of competitors. Ben has completed his first year of college
in Toronto and is back home for the summer in Connecticut where he has
been mentored by Art Ellis and FAI CD Dennis Phelan. Other college
students who were present and did well include Sara Radziunas (from
Connecticut at Renssaleer), Philip Scheiman (from Oregon or Washinton
state going to school in Pennsylvania), and Peter Barron (from Connecticut
at Purdue). We need to do all we can to celebrate their academic and
modeling efforts.
Bob Beidron from Virginia won F1B and there is a max-out tie in F1C
between Andrei Kirilenko and Craig Gunder. Craig mentioned that his son
(and former multi-time junior world champ) Austin built him a nice starter
box when he was back from spring break at Stanford University (so that
they can both be competing). I noted on SEN that Austin recently put in a
good showing in Sacramento. Way to go.
Andrei and Craig will resolve their tie at this coming weekend before the
start of F1C at the Eastern U.S. Free Flight Championships (EUSFFC).
Check out the schedule of the EUSFFC for June 10 and 11 at either of the
websites
http://www.brooklynskyscrapers.org
http://www.freeflight.org/competition/2006Fliers/EUSFFC2006.pdf
The EUSFFC is being held this year at Barron Field, run by Joe Wagner, Tom
Fennell, Tom Kerr, Lyndia Wagner, Russ Sandusky, and John Houck. Note that
the schedule is different from the skyscraper challenge and annual, with
EUSFFC events starting at 9am Saturday (including Americas Cup F1B and
F1C) and 8am Sunday (including Americas Cup F1A).
Come and bring a young friend.
Thermals,
Andrew

Roger,
I need help again. My palm IIIxe is not working properly and needs to
be replaced.I tried Fry,s outpost but they do not have any serial port palm
units. They informed only usb port units are available. What can I get
that will work with the red and super magic timers?
Thank You,
BOB SIFLEET

Dave Edmonson at Glidtek has sone Palm IIIxe's for sale at
reasonable prices.
Also F1B Walt found a Tungsten T2 on e-bay for a good price.
The T2 is attactive if you are power crazy, impatient and want
to use Tapio's program with an altimeter because it has a serial
port and a faster processor than IIIxe]
