2006 North West FAI Challenge
=============================

The inaugural North West FAI Challenge followed Mike Roberts and

Ron McBurnette's Tangent Classic. This two in one FAI contests in Oregon
attracted those seeking a cooler flying site and the
possibilities of two America’s Cup scores per event. The
winds were light although
the temperatures did reach an usually high mid-90's. Sunday brought more tricky
thermals and only Rene Limberger maxed out in F1A, Walt Ghio in F1B. These winners
got their custom label Oregon Wine and certificates. Matt
Gewain and Mike
Roberts maxed out in F1C and flew off the next morning. Monday
was cooler,
normal for this time. The wind direction switched 180 degrees
to a field that
did not have motorcycle access but the speed was low and only a few landed
across the fence. Mike had a mechanical problem and could not put in his
flyoff flight. Matt flew his folder and radio DT'd the model at about 2
minutes knowing he had the win. F1G and F1 H flew a 10-minute round Cider
fly off to be used to break any potential ties. Sparkling Cider was awarded
to the winners. The posted times are estimated from memory we're sure
of the placement order. With the light breeze and kinder
thermals, the
flyers quickly put in maxes, which allowed an acceleration of the rounds.
All flights were complete by noon allowing many to hit the road.

Next year we may fly all events on Sunday and use Monday only for flyoffs.
This would allow the long distance travelers to plan for mid-morning departure.

Subject: AmCup Update

We're 2/3 through the 2006 America's Cup season. Many tight races
are shaping up. I image that this Team Selection Finals sandwiched
between Livotto's and the Sierra Cup will result in large bonus points
that could determine the winners this year.

In F1A, WC- Mike McKeever is in the lead but four flyers
can take the lead with a single large bonus point win. F1B i
s even more open with the current leader, Eddie Vanlandingham is
counting two sub- 25 point contests. F1C has a new name in the
lead- Don Chesson- his 99 points is within range of several
flyers. In F1P, the Jr WC - Cody Secor is tied with his silver
medalist Anthony Ferrario. Code has 2 Lost Hills wins and will
have to hit the road to repeat his win. There are also some
open flyers that could push the Jr WC. For F1G I repeat what I
said about F1B-- Eddie Vanlandingham has a small lead.
I have a potentially winning F1H score of 107 points. Several
flyers could change that but it would take two wins with some
bonus points. Jean Pailet always seems to be in the hunt in F1J-
his current lead is being eyed by Steve Spence and previous
two time Jr WC Austin Gunder. Exciting year end competitions
are in the making.

25 Grams Revisited.
===================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Several years ago, the 25 gram motor rule was first discussed and dismissed
as a bad idea. It still is.
The reasons for reducing motor weight included increased rubber quality that
allowed models to get higher and, as a consequence, greater numbers in
fly-offs.
Remember, this was when Tan II was readily available.
I posted a response back then asking what would happen if Tan II was no
longer available?
What would be the effect on our sport?
Well, regrettably, that day has come.
Since Tan II is no longer avalable to all who want it, a reduction in motor
weight would only widen the divide between those who have some left over and
those who don't.
And as for increased numbers in fly-offs, F1B has no more than F1C or F1A.
Why is F1B the perennial target?
Like I said before, fly-offs are great for our sport and if you don't like
running contests that have them, don't run contests.

To Ben [FRG MAX], etal,

Well said my friend.
I totally concur, what a great result by such a fine
group of young people!
I salute you all, & imagine you could probably fly home
on your own energy, without the aid of airliners.

Of course our newest World Champ, Cody did a
wonderful job, but Ben, next chance you get, go
introduce yourself to Anthony Ferrario. You owe it
to yourself to add him as friend.
I had the opportunity fo chat with this fine young
man one evening @ the Nats this year & I like him a lot.
FYI, he won Nats HLG & CLG, both this and last year,
if I have it right.
He knows what to do with balsa, sandpaper & glue.
And can trim a Free Flight, too!
So his close 2nd to Cody is no surprise in my eyes.

A side note to the Ferrarios: please send me email,
as I don't have contact info for you guys. THX.

Ciao,
From the Ol' Leeper
