Rule Changes to increase participation

Dear Mike [Woodhouse]
Whilst on the subject of international rules and competitive advantage from
radio controlled free flight planes, you alluded, 20/8/06, to concerns
regarding proposals to cut performance had merely resulted in cost increases
and reduced participation in FAI classes.
Interestingly, whilst there were 19 countries at the Junior World Free
Flight Championship this year; there were 63 nations competing for the Youth
Sailing World championship in Weymouth this July. There did not appear to
be any FF competitors from Asia, Africa nor the Middle East at the FF
Worlds. The sailing competitors were sailing one design boats, providing a
cap on equipment costs, whilst heightening the sailing skills.
After pondering your original concerns, I was wondering if the simple
expedient of removing - reducing the significant kinetic force applied to
gliders and rubber at the point of launch might be a starting point for
further discussions. What if for instance the maximum breaking strain of
FIA glider towlines was set at 20 kg. Whilst I can understand the skills
needed to pick lift whilst circle towing, the consequential high energy bunt
launches are somewhat at odds with good airmanship, but closer to rocketry.
It seems pretty pointless to have to spend an additional £400 for an
electronic bunter only to have the towline reduced to 35 metres.
So whilst I personally will concentrate on putting together the UK FF.
development program, is there any chance of a full and open debate regarding
the future direction of FAI classes? These discussions might like to
consider a new strategy of implementing twin goals of capping the cost
equipment and improving global participation in free flight.
It is not unusual for Sports Governing Bodies to recognise problems of
declining interest and to reconsider direction and implement action to
remedy.
regards
Nick
combine F1P with F1C

Looking at the result sheet of this years Salzland cup in Germany I found
that F1P flying juniors were listed together with the F1C flyers. Not doing
badly, btw!
I do not know wether they did use the standard F1P-rule, or had something
special.
All in all, I do think it is a good idea for two reasons:
a - it gives those people with F1P-planes more chances to fly and compete,
as I have not yet seen a contest offering F1P here in Europe
b - it will allow F1P-flyers to judge the performance of their birds against
the "fully grown" F1C's and maybe thus further interest in both classes
The number of participants in the power classes is (in Europe) so small that
a number of additional participants can not be a problem.
This, of course, is mainly a matter of the contest organizers except for the
fact that a rule by the FAI has to be made on how to allocate World Cup
points (if any).
So, all you world cup contest organizers - how about it?
many participants and lots of maxes to all

The Free Flight Forum is looking for papers/presentations. It would be a
useful place to start the debate an get opinions.
I've copied Martin Dilly in on that basis
