America's Cup so far Report
===========================
29 Am Cup contests complete, only the King Orange left. Some of the first place positions
are locked up, others have mathematical possibility and a couple where the last flights of
the year could change the top placing's.
My flying partner, Pierre Brun, played the spoiler and beat me at the Eloy contest in F1A
moving himself into 5th place and securing the 1st place position for Mike McKeever.
Barron, Van Nest and myself made a year end charge at Mike and he responded by winning
the Las Vegas and Patterson Contest. Not a bad year-- World Champion, America Cup winner.
Tight race in F1B. Eddy Vanlandingham who has lead for much of the year is now tied with
Paul Crowley. If KO does not change this, the win goes to Eddy via tie breaker rule. Bill
Booth made a run but had a difficult Eloy contest. Rich Rorke in 4th has a shot at 1st
but did not attend the Eloy contest. We'll see what the K.O. has in store.
Randy Archer attended the Las Vegas contest securing his first place AmCup win by
placing second out of two flyers. I learned that Randy was familiar with the El Dorado
lake bed site from many AMA contests of his youth. Second place Ed Carroll would have
needed 18 F1C flyers at Eloy to win- slim chance and so he was a no-show . This afforded
Randy the luxury of not fly F1C at Eloy and was able to help Ryan fly F1A to place
third. Mike Roberts in 3rd place with only 3 scores had a good chance to take 1st
but was not seen at the last few contests.
Paul Crowley came to Eloy with a good shot at winning Am Cup first place in F1G.
John Clap had his problems during the day and is thankfully that Peter Brock
put in the winning flyoff flight which keeps John in 1st position. Paul's 2nd
place moved him into AmCup 2nd place. It was rumored that third place Tom Ioerger
would be at Eloy but he did not show-- perhaps planning to make a move at KO? A win
at KO or a 2nd place with 1 bonus point could put him in the lead.
Try as he may by winning 7 F1H contests, Mike McKeever could not catch the first
place Brian VanNest. Brian won the 3 contests with the largest bonus points. Mike
Fedor is in the top 5 again and Norm Smith has steadily improved and is in 5th.The
highest Placing Jr, Kyle Jones is in 6th place and is displacing Dallas Parker.
Dallas is into the collage phase now and so Pierre and I have been using his models
to try to challenge the VanNest- McKeever dynamic dual-- maybe next year.
Although Ed Carroll could not catch Archer in F1C, both he and Jean Pailet have a
chance to displace 1st Place Tom Kerr in F1J. This could come down to KO. F1J has
only 4 contests with more than 1 bonus point and these contest wins were scattered
among 3 flyers. 18 contest had less than 5 entrants. By my observation, I'm
afraid the numbers are down because the light, simpler models have given way
to the mini-F1C ships.
While F1J participation is down, F1P is slowly increasing. Time will tell. The
one thing you can count on is Cody Secor's steady performance and is again in
the lead. His Jr teammate, Anthony Ferrario is in third place and the third
teammate Brian Pacelli made the list this year. I can't forget Mike Fedor who
is keeping the Jrs honest. If the growth continues through 2006, the SCAT will
secure a perpetual trophy with the generous offer from Jim Bradley.
Aram Schlosberg is the faithful promoter of the fledging F1Q event. Vic Nippert
is in the lead having won the only three contests that held F1Q this year. I'm s
ure more contests will schedule F1Q as more flyer's become aware of the event.
I receive little input from my request for 2006 Am Cup input. The EUSFFC is being
moved to Wawayanda, NY. (June 10th and 11th) due to field availability issue,
hopefully for just the 2006 season. This was coordinated by Joe Wagner with
Andrew Barron and the Skyscrapers. Pierre Brun coordinated moving the Sierra
Champs to Oregon and have a dual Am Cup Contest over a Friday through Monday
long weekend. A similar decision will be finalized next weekend to move the
USFFC sanction to the Winter Classic. Try as many have, the attendance of the
USFF champs is declining and the unpredictability of the organization from year
to year balanced against the attractiveness of having another AmCup contest
adjacent to the Max Men is appealing. We believe this will be well received
by many that trex long distances to Lost Hills every President's day weekend.
There are no significant rule changes- only a clarification on the notification
requirements for canceling and rescheduling Am Cup Contest.
Email me comments or corrections.

ARIZONA FAI CHAMPIONSHIPS DEC. 3 AND 4
The flyers who were on the Eloy field on Friday had beautiful Arizona
weather, blue skies, light winds and a temperature of 75 degrees. John Clapp
came from Pennsylvania, Paul Crowley from Michigan, Eddie and Marleen
Vanlandingham from Texas and 'our' Canadian snowbird Peter Allnutt from
Taft, CA.. Plus there was a good crowd from California who wanted to have
some goodflying competition or to get some of the last America's Cup points
of the year.
Saturday morning was cool with 45 degrees and light winds when the first
F1A/B round started. Too bad that in that round Aimee Raymond, CA flew her
Wakefield into a 'very rare' tree for a 178s flight. Around noon the
westerly wind picked up with gusts up to 17 mph. Together with some monster
thermals this made for some long retrievals so that that after round 5 the
contest was put on hold and later in the afternoon stopped after
condititions did not improve.
Sunday morning at sunrise it was cold, not much above freezing. With the sun
soon warming and a very light wind it made for nice F1A/B fly-off
conditions. These were won by Pierre Brun, OR (F1A) and Paul Crowley, MI
(F1B). Remarkable was the circle towing and flying by our own Ryan Archer
(Jr) who placed 3rd in the F1A fly-off. The F1G/H competition started with
light westerly winds, with thermals getting stronger. After the good rain
that we had earlier in the year in the desert the retrieval was not always
easy in the plentiful Russian thistle bushes. Hopefully they will soon roll
into the sunset as tumbleweeds. After 5 rounds there were 5 each still clean
in F1G and F1H. After 2 fly-off rounds in F1G and 3 fly-off rounds in F1H
in breezy conditions we had the winners: Peter Brocks (F1G) and Mike
McKeever (F1H).
The Phoenix Model Airplane Club and the Tucson Freeflight Club thank all
flyers who came to fly with us and hope to see you all again for the Randy
Archer Invitational and the Southwest Regionals on Jan, 13 and 14, 2006.

Wing Building Forms

Roger,
Can anyone in the SEN universe give some ideas about wing building form
boards for F1A and F1H wings? It is my impression that hot-wired blue foam
is popular although plaster forms are also known to work. Currently, my
plaster form experiments have achieved mixed results (cracks, sags, etc...)
although the surface finish is good. Any input would be valuable and
appreciated.

USA Finals Qualifications
=========================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Roger,
I have received a very few notes regarding discrepancies in the Qualification
Times reported. When I try to check out the problem, it seems that the
reports have not been filed by the CD for the contests in question. I would
appreciate hearing from potential team selection finalists sooner rather than later
regarding such problems so that they can be fixed within the framework of the
process that I am using to record their scores. The most recent mailing to
the team selection participants had the spreadsheet showing their times, but
not the list of contests that had been recorded to date. That list follows
below. If a contest at which a contestant recorded qualification times is not
listed, please let me know the date and the CD and his/her email so I can make
the required fix.
