Dear Andras,

Gyorgy Benedek had great influence on the aeromodelling movement in
Germany. Not only his airfoils but his scientific articles in German
magazines as well improved the standard of our model aircrafts in the
fifties and enabled us to move up to world class level. Standing on the
shoulders of the heroes of these days we are still deeply indebted to
Dr. Benedek. I was very much impressed when I met him 1993 and enjoyed
his superb knowledge and his nice German.

It is sad to loose such an important personality.

Yours

Gerhard Woebbeking

Hi Roger,

Andre Schandel sent me a eulogy for Rene Jossien for me to translate
and to be put into the SEN.

Thanks, Peter
____________________________________________________________________

On March 10, 2004 Rene Jossien passed away of heart failure at the age
of 81. He was in the truest sense of the word an "extraordinary" man and
this in multiple areas: poetry, painting, music, writing, fishing, and
not in the last place free flight. In the 50's and 60's in France he was
one of the leading men in Model Magazine and on the flying field. During
these years he enticed more than a few people into free flight. He was
several times French Champion and a member of the French Team. He
developed a formula to determine the center of gravity for all classes
of free flight models. He brought to life the indoor event Sainte
Formule and developed some airfoils. Since the founding of the Vol Libre
magazine he contributed to nearly every issue. The "Golden Pen" in Vol
Libre is his brain child - for which he even awarded a prize.
Sensibility, humor, sensitivity, pride, the striving for perfection did
not make him easy to understand - he was outside the norm. He was one of
the great ones here in France, one of a circle that becomes smaller and
smaller. His name shall live on in free flight!
Andre Schandel

NFFS Discussion

Hi Roger,
I'd like to let SEN readers know that I've installed new discussion software
on the NFFS web site that is a major improvement over the old MS software.
One of the nice things about it is that images can be posted along with
text. I would like to invite fliers interested in discussion regarding FAI
events and technical topics to the new forum.
Thanks,
Alan

Buy Tech and Jrs.

So, what happens in a few years, when the present crop of Jr. FAI sportsmen
are no longer financed/supplied model parts by parents? Will they be able to,

or even want to buy new parts? Will they be able to repair high tech crashes?

How many of current crop going to WC can build *any* AMA-level models? Or
how 'bout just a Gollywock, a Starduster, or HLG?

Paper tubes

It's not clear ( to me, anyhow ) what purpose
M. Seagrave's tubes will serve. ...Mike S....
I hope I've got the right guy !

We used to make the tube by hand, the hands held horizontally,
with index and middle fingers of each hand held in apposition
- the middle fingers touching.
The thumb, then, is free to translate vertically ..
The paper tube, happily, is formed in the horizontal grove
formed by the fingers, the thumbs effecting a rolling usually in
one durection.
Rolling stops when the edge of the paper appears.
The tongue, having been preparing for this event the while,
presents his tip, moisture just so, to the edge of the paper.
One final roll, and the finished tube is brought forward with a
gesture of studied elan !

The paper of choice was ZigZag..

Hi Roger,

Please include the below information in your next SCAT web page.

Thanks, Walt

Several flyers have asked if I could arrange a second day of FAI flying at
the Bissonnette Memorial for Team Finals qualifying. On Sunday, may 30th we
will have a qualifying contest for F1A, F1B and F1C. The two rounds of the
"Big Al's Shootout" will be round 1 and 2. The next five flights must be
completed by12 noon with no rounds being used. The flight times from "Big
Al's Shootout" will be used to determine the winners. The entry fee if $5
per event and the winner will take the total entry for each event. This is
all with in the Team Selection program as we have a sanction and separate
contest each day. Contact Walt Ghio @ 209-478-8225, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if

2004 Spring Cup -Texas
======================

Spring Cup Seguin Results

The weather Saturday morning was good except for the fact that the wind had not decided on a direction. The middle of the field was very wet which meant that we had to stay on the runways, which severely limited the useable field in any direction. Once t
e wind finally took a ?set? the direction was not good. After several delays, and three moves we called it a day after five rounds. Everyone worked very hard to get their flights in and almost all of the flights in rounds 4 and 5 went off the field. We e
ded the day with three clean in Open Gas and two in F1C. F1C will be decided at a later date.

On Sunday we held the fly off in Open gas at 7AM and all the people were off the field in three minutes. Round one of the Mini events started at 8 sharp with a stiff NE breeze. Six people had put in flights when the torrential rains hit at about 8:30. We
waited until about 11AM and a lull in the rain to get everyone packed up and off the field. Fortunately no one got stuck, but the mini events were washed out and have been rescheduled for the Tri-City 23rd Annual on 5 June, starting at 0800. Thanks to ev
ryone that attended (we had 24 contestants) and we hope for better weather next year.

Paper tubes

Roger,
I'm not sure for what application the paper tubes are to be used. However,
for short lengths of paper tubes, the standard method used by Indoor flyers is
to start with a length of music wire of the desired diameter (2 mm MW is
readily available). The glue of choice is Ambroid and the paper is good ol'
Japanese tissue. Cut the tissue so that the grain of the rolled tube will be
aligned with its length. Make a dry roll of the tissue on the wire to see how
much
is needed to make 3 - 5 rotations. Glue one end of the tissue to the wire
and let it partially dry. Then smear some more glue on the loose end of the
tissue and spin the wire with one hand while holding the tissue against the wir
e
with the thumb and forefinger of the other hand. As soon as the tube is
rolled and while the glue is still sticky, push the tube off the wire with your

fingernail onto a sheet of food-wrap plastic (The solvent in the glue will
soften the initially glued paper to wire). Let it dry competely overnight. To

trim the ends of the dried tube, replace it on the music wire and roll it under
a
razor blade. Tubes up to about one inch in length may be made by this
technique. If you make a lot of tubes at one time you can again enjoy biting
the
excess dried glue off your fingers and spitting it out.

To make fiberglass tubes, coat the wire with candle wax. Use slow-drying
epoxy and lightweight cloth (0.6 oz/yd). Give the waxed wire a coat of epoxy a
nd
spiral wind the cloth as tightly as you can over the glued portion. Multiple
layers of cloth. Cut some Saran Wrap (original) into tape about 1/2" wide
and spiral wrap over the cloth/epoxy/waxed wire. Place in the oven set at abou
t
150-180 degrees F for one-half hour. Heat causes the Saran Wrap to shrink
and make the fiberglass conform to the wire size as the epoxy cures at an
accelerated rate.

It's a bit of a problem to remove the fiberglass tube from the wire, however.
Also, the Saran Wrap is weakend and fragile. I just sand off the excess
wrap (it only adheres to the epoxy by electrostatic attraction). Cut the excess

fiberglass from the ends as for the paper tubes above. Warm the wire again to

loosen up the wax and slide off the fiberglass tube (it may take some
twisting with a pliers to break minor adhesions first).

For both techiques, the chances of success are best with short lengths.

Concorde's last flight

Last fall, I was very fortunate to be in London, close to Thames river, when
three Concordes passed by in the blue sky with a gorgeous sun. They were
about to land at Heathrow for their last flight.
Every one had a tear in his eyes. I will never forget this magical sight,
pure expression of human genius.

A very well known method is to cut a strip of tissue, preferably porous as
Modelspan, then sature it with balsa cement (UHU-Hart) and roll it on a
suitable diameter piano wire.
When the external layer has started to dry, push gently the tube with a nail
and let it dry apart.
