Dear SCAT Readers,
I was thinking and dreaming for a long time about "Competition For
Competitors". Some part was realized at Antonov Cup 1990, European and
Junior World Champs, Antonov Cup 1994 in Kiev where I took part in
organization. This year I took invitation from Alexander MARAKHOVSKIY (The
Chairman of "FARLEP Co." - one of the biggest telephone and Internet
provider in Ukraine) to be a contest Director of a new World Cup event -
"Black Sea Cup", which was run in Odessa/Ukraine and entered by Moldova.
Last weekend competition has been gone and it looks like my dream came true.
Let me tell you a few passages about how it was.
All sportsmen who had come by train were met by organizers and delivered
directly to the campsite. The campsite with many trees includes three big
military tents
(with beds, bed linen, bedside-tables), 8 bio toilets and shower cubicles, a
few attractions for children (all free of charge), restaurant-bar with
moderate prices, delicious cuisine and always cold draft bear (0.66$ per 0,5
liter!!!) really worked till last customer. Also, in a few kilometers an
Aqua Park and a Black Sea beach were available.
On Friday evening, the new warm up unofficial contest took place - "Matrix.
Endless Flight" (just one flight to the ground). While the Opening Ceremony,
the process of hoisting the flags (Ukrainian and FAI with playing anthems)
were made by 14 all-time World and European Champions (Individual and in
Team) and World Cup Winners, taking part in competition. There were: Viktor
Tchop, Vladislav
Lazarevitch, Igor Yablonovsky, Dmitry Grigoriev, Anton-Pavel Vedinsek (SLO),
Victor Isaenko, Oleg Kulakovsky, Igor Vivchar, Evgueny Gorban, Evgeny
Verbytsky, Artem Babenko, Vjacheslav Aleksandrov, Vladimir Tregubenko,
Andrei Kirilenko (USA), the rest from Ukraine.
As for the competition itself: three flyers per pole, duration of each
round - 55 minutes with 5 minutes break, no Supermax. The beginning of the
first round at 6:30 on Saturday and at 6:10 on Sunday. The majority of the
poles have two timekeepers and just a few of them had one. Most of them -
modelflyers, the rest - experienced timers. Both days partly cloudy, wind -
1-3 m/sec. (in the seventh round it was 4 m/sec.), no rain, sunny weather
from the seventh round till the evening. The Fly-Offs started at 6:30 pm.
F1B and F1C had 7 min max, F1A - 5. Nobody maxed in Fly-Off, except small
classes . To compare with "Matrix", where rather high results were performed
by a several number of flyers, all the results were law. It can be explained
by changing the wind direction by 90 degrees and according to the specific
relief of the field, this direction became negative for the successive
flights. New unknown field won against Masters (which was not so bad for me
as organizer).
While the Closing Ceremony, an entertainment program and a banquet were
presented at the evening on Sunday. Many people stayed on the podium - 17
nominations. Nice, exclusively made for BSC trophies and medals were
presented.
Top 10 in F1A, 6 in F1B, 3 in F1C and winners in small events got Checks (as
was announced before competition. Total Grand Prix fund - $12,000). Later
they exchange checks to the cash in Bank branch on the camp side. Then
dancing till 2 o'clock after midnight...
Many Thanks to all people who made "Black Sea Cup - 2004".

Roger,
Please include this in SEN if it will go out before the Nats. I'm looking
for a used F1A. New model vendors don't respond to this - just individuals
please. I have a new model on order, but could really use something for the
Nats that's carbon and bunts. If anyone has a mechanical or electronic
model that they can part with, and can bring it to Muncie, please email or
call Jim Farmer. 480 705-2668.

Hello:
A friend is interested to get the plan of the "Shorty", an A2 glider
by C.J. Hancock, an oldtimer from the fiftyes.
A file in CAD or jpg would be perfect.
With thanks,
Javier Abad

At the recently concluded MMM FAI Annual we were treated to our first ever F1E
(magnet steered glider) event. It was graciously managed by Arizona's Peter
Brocks, and Jon Davis came up from Albuquerque for the challenge. The event wa
s
flown in five, two-min-max rounds. We found the rolling hills at our field to
be quite conducive to slope soaring. It is very interesting to see a model
making its own heading corrections and max while never rising more than 20 ft
above the ground. Peter Brocks managed to top the tag-team of Jon Davis and
able assistant, Ken Phair. Anyone interested in F1E should come join us next
year.

Roger,
Here are the results of the Maxman Summer Contest. I want
to thank everyone who showed up. It was not as hot as I expected
it to be. For flying the weather was perfect.
We had four of our Junior team members flying. Brian Bauer,
Cody & Tyler Secor and Phil Scheiman. Three of the juniors
trophied. Brian Bauer had to leave early or it might have been
four. We want to wish them all good luck in France as they
represent the USA.

Thanks to Walt Ghio for his donation in support of SEM
also
Thanks to those such as Victor Stamov and his son Sasha who prepare
excellent reports on events - when English is not their native language.
It sounds like I should have stayed over after the Antonov Cup and
gone to Odessa - ah the evils of having to earn a living !
