Report from France
===================

Roger,
Here's a report from France and the Jr Champs. Excuse me if a write a
bunch about our personal experience, but I'm not an official reporter.
Hopefully others will write about their stuff. Right now it is lunch time
on Wednesday, F1B day, and I'm in a tent in the middle of the field with
my laptop. Hopefully I'l l be able to send this tonight. Conditions out
here have been mostly wind and rain since Sunday. Tonight started out
with a beautiful calm morning, but it started blowing by the third round.
Maybe not bad by European standards, but windy for this spoiled Lost Hills
flyer. The field is big and beautiful. Only a few models going off the
field dispite the drift. The last round before lunch
was the 5th, and all three US team members had long flights in huge
thermals which challenged the chase team. Phil Scheiman's model went the
furthest, reportedly landing in a castle in an adjacent small town. All
models returned back OK however. Phil just put a more powerful radio beacon
in his model. All three US kids have been putting up great flights, but a
dramatic tragedy struck in the 4th round. Agressive winding Sarah Radziunas
broke two motors before finally getting ready to fly. When she launched the
model the prop failed to start and the model was on the ground in a few
seconds for an attempt. With 10 minutes left in the round she put her
second model together and started winding again, this time conservatively.
With 5 minutes left she was at the pole. After a couple minutes conditions
looked good so she launched. The model started up normally but the stab
VIT never kicked in, and with the model staying with a low incidence
setting it quickly put it's nose down and was in the ground after about 10
seconds. Apparently in the rush to fly, a timer arm or disc was not in
the right place. Very disappointing, but she pulled it together and maxed the
next flight. I have no idea about the scoreboard and other flyers. The first
two rounds were easy for most, but now it is much more difficult.
F1A day was yesterday. My son Brian had to fly with borrowed airplanes because
he never got his model box. More on our terrible lost luggage situation in a
moment as that is the story of our trip. Anyway, Brian got a model from Victor
Stamov and a few from Brian Van Nest to register Monday night. We practiced
with the Stamov model Sunday and Monday and Brian liked it, but there was
still many differences in the way it tows and launches as compared to
his Buntbones that he was planning on flying. It rained alot Monday night
and Tuesday morning was cloudy, windy, and cold. The field was recently
plowed, so the boys were running and towing with lots of mud on their shoes.
The first round saw Michael A. max and Brian maxed, but Tyler Secor has some
very turbulent air and his Long model dropped about 30 seconds. In the
second or third round Michael broke an airplane when his towline wrapped
around a rock and the wind crashed the airplane. He had other challenges,
included losing a model while test flying because it never dt-ed, but it was
later found. He persevered and held up very well however. The combination
of wind and unfamilier model struck Brian in the second round. He set up
the model for launch too low and it went hard to the right upon release. The
bunt kicked in and it dived down, but recovered to do about 90 seconds. The
boys kept going with lots of maxes and long chases, despite losing a few
more seconds. After the 6th round they were actually in third place for
the overall team score, but then it all fell apart. In the 7th round
Michael circle towed in the wind and we all saw his model look very high on
the line which looked great. He also thought is was good and launched, but
there was no air and he came down quickly. Tyler did a great job of circle
towing, moving downwind, and getting into postition. The line tangled around
his feet a few times but Austin Gunder was right there to untangle him.
Tyler then mirrored Michael's flight as it looked really great for a circle
while on the line, but then after launch the air was gone. Brian was last
and started towing as it calmed down just a bit. He worked his way downwind
to get in postition, and to tow in the straw field where running was much
easier than in the mud. It was pretty apparent that a big thermal had been
building. Brian then let the line out to set up for launch, and just as
the model was going down wind a huge gust of wind which was the thermal fill
hit him. It was pulling the model right into the ground when Brian was
obliged to release the line and took an attempt. There was about 5 minutes
left in the round when Brian got ready to fly again . He waited on the
ground for signs of thermal build, but finally launched with a couple minutes
left and there was not much air and he did a little over two minutes.
After that the US team placed dropped to about 11th out of 19 countries. The
team from Isreal won and were celebrating all over the field.
About 6 individuals maxed out. It was all decided with one 5 minute flyoff rou
nd. The winner was from the Netherdands.
Now I must subject everyone reading this to our airline story. Sorry for all
the words, but I'm just getting started. We flew British Airways from LA to
London, and then London to Paris. We get to Paris on Thursday but all of
our luggage is missing. After a few minutes we're standing there and Phil
Scheiman walks up. Turns out he and his family also took British Airways,
only they arrived Tuesday. Phil has been sitting next to the baggage
carousel for two days looking for his stuff! No clothes, no models. We see
lots of other people standing around with lost bags getting in line to file
complaints and we start to discover that there is a big problem going on.
Thunderstorms in London, the likes of which have not been seen in perhaps 100
years, have been going on all week and have cancelled and delayed 100's of
flights. Instead of leaving for the field, we join with the Scheiman's in a
waiting and complaining game at the British Airways luggage counter. We get
slightly lucky as our two personal bags with clothes come on a later flight
about 6 hours later, but still no model boxes. We finally leave for a
Holiday Inn Express near the airport Thursday night, thinking that we must
stay around the Paris airport to get our model boxes. All day Friday goes
by living at the terminal (see the new Tom Hanks movie, "Terminal"). Every
single BA flight from London to Paris comes in with missing luggage.
Interesting. The thunderstorms are over, but still every flight the people
line up to file claims for missing bags. We use all powers to persuade the
workers to give us status. The boys personally plead their case, showing
off the team t-shirts. Some of the workers are rude and tell us to leave.
They say the bags will be delivered to us, but we would rather get them right
here at the airport and don't feel confident in leaving everything in the
hands of these people who are obviously working through a major breakdown of
the system. There are reports of up to 40,000 bags now missing in the
British Airways system. I read in the paper that the British Airways workers
are planning a strike for August 25. I'm wondering if they have already
decided to start. A couple of the desk workers are nice to us however. One
named Stephanie has a husband that
once flew models and starts to help us, raising our status to urgent among the
thousands of other complaints. We get word late Friday that BA is shipping a
load of thousands of lost bags from London to Paris via truck, and that our
bags should be there, maybe 4am Saturday. We take this as a positive sign
and decide to get out of this dreadful airport and see something in Paris
for the evening.
We return to the baggage terminal Saturday morning thinking that this will
be the big day we get our stuff. We're told that all the baggage is still
being unloaded off the trucks so we continue to wait. By about 2pm we inquire
again and discover a new problem. Since they were shipped by cargo, all
the bags have to be released by French customs before we can get them, and
the customs guy is currently out to lunch. We press hard to get one of
these people to just go down there and get the stuff for us, but they are
not authorized. They make phone calls to the people down stairs handling
these bags and a report comes back that they have spotted one of our boxes
and one of Phil's boxes so we start getting excited. A few hours later the
story is that the customs guy will not do anything tonight. His is already
grumpy from all the requests we have made, so pushing harder will probably
only make things worse. Also it is not clear how
much and what kind of paper work they will need to release the bags. I'm so
mad that at one point I follow one of the workers downstairs and almost
continue behind him as he goes into the restricted area below the terminal
where I think the bags are. I back off though, with thoughts of security
guards, rifles, and French prison.
About 7pm I decide that enough is enough. The customs guy doesn't work Sunday,
and we need to get to the field. We make the drive and get to the hotel after
11pm. Sunday we decide that it is better to assume we are not going to get
our model boxes and start to work on getting loaner models. Aimee Raymond,
Phil, Kim, and Dave Scheiman arrive on Sunday, still without all their
stuff. (Phil is still wearing the same underwear, though I think he washed
it once or twice) The opening ceremony Sunday evening was really nice with
all the teams parading through the town with band playing, a float, and local
dancers in true Olympic style. At least this got our mind off our problems.
About 11:30 pm Sunday I check the status of our lost baggage claims on the BA
website from my hotel room. No change on our bags, still not found, but big
news when I check Phil's stuff. There is a delivery notification for his
model boxes, though not his clothes (who cares about the clothes!). There
is a tracking number for a local courier with a delivery date of Monday. I'm
so excited to tell Phil that I almost knock on their door, but since it's so
late I wait until the morning. Monday morning Phil and his family are pretty
excited when I b reak the news. At least maybe he will get his stuff
before F1B day. Monday afternoon I send a fax to our friend Stephanie at
the BA baggage counter to get a status on everything, and to make a last
ditch effort to get our stuff. They had told us that there is no way to call
them, but that a fax should get throug h. Just as we are leaving for the
field to process our planes at 5pm, there is
a call from Stephanie. Bad news. Our bags are still not found, and when I
inquire about Phil's stuff I'm told that it will not be delivered today
despite the status I saw on the internet. Apparently they had done
everything to get the bags ready to go, including lining up the courier and
filing all the papers, so the report I saw was correct. However, this was
all dependent on the custom s guy cooperating and it turned out that he
didn't release the stuff Monday. I took the opportunity to give her another
sob story. I told her that all hope was lost for my son and his airplanes
since we now have to fly the next day without our stuff. I explained that
there was still hope for Phil however because he doesn't fly until
Wednesday, and that all power under heaven should be moved to somehow get
his stuff delivered. So then we drive out to the field and I'm depressed
because I'm thinking about how I'm going to break the news to Phil.
He has been in a good mood all day because he thinks his models are on the
way, and now this news will hit him hard. We get there and I explain this
news as carefully as I can. Phil seems to take it OK, but I know he's really
hurting inside. A couple minutes later Janna Van Nest walks up with her
cell phone. It is Stephanie from the airport who wants to talk to me. I
run onto the field with the phone so I can talk and hear. She reports that
something has happened, and that two of my bags and all of Phil's bags are
now ready to go to the courier truck. The guy should leave in an hour or
two, and we should have them about 11 or 12pm. Wow. I give a thumbs up to
Bob Piserchio who is standing nearby wondering what is happening, because he
had just starting showing Phil how to fly one of his planes, as was George
Batiuk as well. I'm excited because now I realize Brian should have his
planes before the contest tomorrow as well. We explain the situation to the
jury so that they will allow us to re-process the models at 6am the next morning before the contest.
Back at the hotel about 10:30pm we are all waiting in a good mood when there is
a call for me from the British Airways courier. He says he is just now
leaving Paris. I inquire for details about his cargo. He has all of Phil's
stuff as planned, but for some reason he has only one of the two boxes I am
missing. A description reveals that he is delivering my model box, but not
Brian's. Disappointment. It should have been Brian's box, not mine. This is
only a slight improvement for us. I decide that if this is the case, I will
probably let Brian fly a couple of my models, since at least we are more
familier with them than some of the other loaner models, even though Brian has
never flown them. We realize that the truck will arrive around 3 or 4am
Tuesday morning. Phil's Dad Dave Scheiman volunteers to sit in front of the
hotel all night to meet the truck when it arrives since the hotel locks the
doors at about 10:30pm. I go to bed with my door unlocked for the delivery
but don't sleep well. Brian fortunately is sleeping great, so I don't wake
him at 4:10am when my door opens and Dave puts the box in our room, which is
indeed my model box. I open it and discover the packing paper and other
stuff inside is wet! Also the latches are broken and the hinge on the box
is tweaked. The baggage label on the outside is extremely faded. This thing
has been sitting outside in the rain and sun for days! How rude of them.
Most of the models look OK however, although the carbon
nose pod hatch on one glider is blistering in a strange way. Victor tells
me later that only extreme heat could cause that, so this box got real
hot somehow.
.. Anyway, I spend the next hour changing numbers and stickers on a couple of
my planes so that Brian can fly them. Just as I finish it is time to leave for
the field for processing at 6am. Needless to day, I was dead tired at the end
of the day.
As of today we've still heard nothing about Brian's box or Phil's clothes. Of
course Aimee has now taken Phil shopping so that is fine, but I'm still a bit
worried about getting Brian's box back just to get it home to the US somehow.
News flash: It is now Wednesday evening at the hotel and I am about to try and
send this. The last two rounds of F1B were delayed until 5:30pm because of
poor conditions. The line was moved to an extreme part of the field to help
deal with wind near the max limit. All three US flyers max the 6th round in
big huge thermals. Sarah's model get damaged from tumbling in the wind and
Phil's lands in someone's yard in town, but thanks to a great chase team they
all come back for the 7th round. At this point Sarah has dropped,
Phil has dropped only 20 seconds, and Taylor Gunder is still perfect. Taylor
goes first in this last round, but then disaster strikes. Everything looks
good as he winds, then waits for air that looks fantastic. He then gives
another one of his perfect javelin launches and the plane starts climbing out
in a perfect attitude when suddenly as it is maybe 30 feet high the rubber
moter explodes, the prop stops, and the plane points back down. It recovers
just in time to glide for 24 seconds, even though Taylor is chasing it
downwind to try and grab it under 20 seconds. So the last chance for our
team to make the flyoff is suddenly gone for no reason other that what is
apparently a rather rare occurance pretty much out of anybody's control.
Tough luck.
About 7 were left for the flyoff which is postponed until 7am tomorrow morning.
The Ukranian team won the team trophy with two of them in the flyoff.
Hopefully others will tell their stories. Enough from me for now.

2005 Team Selection Finals
==========================
Roger,
Can you help me get this information out about the Team Selection Finals? I
am not sure if you can handle the spreadsheet within the framework of the SEN
page. If you can help go ahead and edit my message as required. I am
concerned as a lot of people have not entered the Finals and the deadline
is fas
approaching.
Thanks,
Jim
There are less than two week for you to pay your Finals entry fee before the
cutoff date, which is August 23rd. AMA must have received you Finals entry
fee by that date or you will not be allowed to fly in the Team Selection Finals.
The only exception are spelled in the program and only effect last minute
qualifiers.
Attached is the current status of program participants in an prinyed from
an Excel fom. It is a long report and some lines are wrapped
but you should be able to figure your status.
If there is an error in your qualifying status contact me immediately so
the error can be correct before it is too late. Lisa Johnson at AMA also has a
copy of this spreadsheet, so if you need to enter the Final contact her
directly.
Enter now if you are qualified and plan on flying in the Finals.
