100years

Roger,
With reference to Dick Baxter's comments on the 100th =
Anniversary of flight and the Wright Brothers.
There has been some controversy in New Zealand on whether Richard =
Pearse, a 25-year-old farmer from a remote country area, flew nine =
months before the Wright brothers.
The reports of the attempts came from eyewitnesses years afterward and =
it uncertain what sort of flight was achieved, although the aircraft =
ended on top of a hedge.
At attempt was made to fly a replica last weekend at a commemorative =
show, but bad weather prevented more than a taxiing demonstration.
Whether Pearse flew or not it was evident that working without any =
outside references and using materials found on his farm- he made =
everything from the engine to the nuts and bolts--he was more advanced =
in many ways than the Wright brothers.
The aircraft was a tractor monoplane, with a tricycle undercarriage and =
ailerons.

Seelig Tail Booms

Roger, please be kind enough to put on SEN

For Sale - Carbon/Kevlar Tail Booms from Hans Seelig (the timer man)

I have an order of 6 of Seelig's tail booms coming from Germany. 2 are
spoken for, the other 4 are for sale.

For those not familiar with the Seelig tail boom, they are extremely strong
being composed of Carbon Fiber and Kevlar. They are custom made to Hans
specifications by a German Fishing Rod company. I have used them since the
mid 1980's. Prior to the ultra light weight Aluminum tail booms becoming
available for the F1C ships I used them as my tail booms. I still use them
for AMA gas ships. Some of the AMA Gas fliers find them to be great when
used as a complete fuselage.

Some of the outstanding features they have is strength to weight ratio,
durability, and the ease of repair. Field repairs are rapid using nothing
but CA glue and lightweight glass cloth. The repairs when sanded smooth
later and sprayed with clear epoxy become almost invisible.

Specifications:
Length 44.624"
Large end diameter is 1.5" OD
Small end diameter is .62" OD
Weight approximately 56 grams
(the finish is a high gloss with shrink tape markings. The gloss and
shrink tape markings can be sanded off to a smooth dull finish
without reducing the strength. Finish with a coat of clear epoxy for a
beautifully smooth tailboom. A tailboom 40" in length, weighs
approximately 50-51 grams.)

Cost of the Tailboom is $50.00 each, plus $6.00 S&H

Please send checks to:

Reid Simpson

I will ship as soon as I receive the tail booms from Hans. Approximately the
first of May. If I receive orders for more then the 4 booms available, I
will order additional booms from Hans to fill all orders

Reid Simpson.

Norcal Free Flight Champs/Exempt Contests

One think I did not see in Fred's input on the Norcal Free Flight Champs
is that it is an exempt National Cup contest. Exempt means it is exempt
from the 2 scores per site rule and can be used as a third score from
Waegell Field and a seventh score overall. Each NFFS District now has
one exempt contest which can be used to help garner National Cup points.
In 2002 only the NATS at Muncie was exempt. Details for the scoring
are in the National Cup rules as posted on the might fine NFFS Web site.

The four exempt contests are:
N. East District - NATS at Muncie on 7/28 to 8/1=20

Central - Minneapolis MAC Fall Contest at N. Branch on 9/6 to 9/7=20

S. East - KOI at Palm Bay on 12/29 to 12/31=20

West - Northern Cal Free Flight Champs at Waegell on 5/3 to 5/4

If you have any questions on the National Cup or would like to be added
to electronic distribution of the newsletter, contest schedule, and
scoring please drop me an e mail.

Thanks,

Magic airplane
==============
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I see that Walt Ghio has won another big contest. Is there any chance that
we could get a brief description of his airplane?

Thanks,
Rick Ewing

[Rick

Walt's design has been published before. Walt has 4 airplanes
he uses regularily, one of those is better than the others. That
is the magic airplane.

But in Norway it was Walt's magic flying that did it in the last flyoff
round as the second place getter did not get his flight off. Apparantly
he launched after the final buzzer and got a better time than Walt's
but of course it did not count. ]
