SOUTHERN CROSS CUP RESULTS
==========================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Dear Roger,
Please find following the results for the Southern Cross Cup which was
conducted at Narrandera NSW on the 22nd and 23rd of April 2003. The site was
in the same area as last years event, at Widgiewa a grazing property off
the Urana road approx 50 klms south east of Narrandera. The weather
conditions were excellent with temperatures ranging between 8-28 degrees C ,
and wind velocities ranging from 0-4 mtrs / sec. A flight line was
established using cone markers and did not need relocation for the duration
of the contest. Visibility was generally good, although airborne dust and
heat haze made timekeeping difficult in some rounds. The super max system
was not implemented due to this airborne dust and its unpopularity, only two
competitors required a flyoff.
Of special interest was your man Brian Van Nest who came "down under" for
the second year and almost managed to take out F1B, losing out in a 7
minute fly off with perhaps one of the all time greats Don Blackam.
The other interesting fact was that we need some of your F1C flyers to
keep this event alive, perhaps 2004 with 4 World Cup comps in 3 weeks (2 in
NZ, 2 in Aus) the best beer, fantastic weather , in two of the most
interesting places on the planet.

Dear all,
I just got a mail from Reiner Hofsaess. He is using the Garmin Geko, and
claims the cross track error can in fact be visualised on screen.
However, this feature appears not to be documented in the Geko manual
(can be downloaded from the Garmin internet site).
So apart from the absence of an external antenna connector, the Geko
does appear to be on top on the FF-suitability/price index as indicated
by Mike.
Here is what Reiner wrote about the Geko:
Hallo Allard,
I bought the Geko to use it on land. I can upload a nearly unlimited
number of trackpoints from marco-polo- or map-and-guide-routingprogram
and it keeps 10000 trackpoints in the active log, so I can track with a
short record interval.
On the other side it is a backup-device to contol my autopilot on the
boat. It transmits following sentences:
$GPRMB,V,0.62,L,TURN 9,TURN

The first value in the sentence RMB (0.62) is the cross track error.

I am currently compiling various F1B parts in an attempt to get another
model completed. Can anyone comment on the pros and cons of the wings from
www.img.ru? The price is right but is the quality comparable to the more
well-known makers? Also, I've heard guys are cutting their motor tubes
shorter for 30 grams. Is there a new *standard* length?

Garmin GPS geko 201
===================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Allard said that, "...in response to Mike's 'ad' on suitable GPS units, I
would like to mention that this particular unit (geko 201) does not show
the so called 'cross track error' which tells you how many meters you are
off track (shortest local distance from you to the calculated track; a
straight line from launch waypoint to model waypoint) according to the
manual I downloaded from the Garmin site. As far as I know only the Etrex
Summit, Garmin GPS-II and GPS-III units additionally provide for this
feature next to the other 'FF essentials'."
Allard,
the geko 201 does show 'cross track error' as the 'off course' option on
the 'Trip Computer' page - see pages 9/10 in the manual. You can down-load
the manual from the Garmin web site at www.garmin.com. The Garmin GPS 12
can also display this data as an option on its 'highway page'. I have
found that just using the map page, as available on the basic Garmin eTrex
and other machines, lets me follow the line very accurately. My method is
fully described in the 'Free Flight Forum' report I mentioned - see SEN
792.
Klaus said that, "...A property missing in the new Garmin, however, is the
option to attach an external antenna which becomes helpful when chasing by
car. That is why I bought a Garmin Pilot III instead of my first handhold.
I just add an extension cable using BNC connectors instead of buying an
(expensive) external antenna.".
Klaus,
I have used the basic eTrex GPS in the car by clipping in under the
sun-roof on the sliding shade, or putting it well forward in the
windscreen. I don't advise trying to view the GPS when driving! You may
end up looking for a doctor instead of your model!
The GPS model you mention would be easier to use in the car, but the tiny
size of the 201 is very nice. They are Pounds 120 in England.
Happy hunting, regards
Mike Fantham

Good turnout, reasonable weather on Saturday, nasty on Sunday rounds 3-5.
Several moves and an easterly breeze caused us to fly two minute maxes on
Saturday. We actually had serveral ships litterally thrown to the ground by
the severe turbulence in the late rounds Sunday. Good diversity in flyers
with participants from Arizona, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and El Paso

Black Magic and hall effect
============================
I ahve had a number of questions about the Hall Effect
'switches' that are an otion with Blabk Magic timers.
This is an answer.
The Hall Effect 'switch' is a transistor that is affected
by an adjacent magnetic field. The presences or absence of the
field is dtected by the device.
There are a wide variety of Hall Effect switches with different
characteristics. Some related to the magnetic properties
and some to the output from the Hall Effect device [ - signal
high or low , latched or not latched, etc].
On the Black and Red Magic timers the way the switch works
is that when it is closed it connects a pin to ground.
So the Hall Effect devices that are used with BlackMagic
drop the signal line to ground when magnetic 'contact' is made.
So on a standard BlackMagic there is a signal line and a ground
line for the two 'switches' , Hook forward and unlatch. To make
the Hall Effect 'switch' work you connect it's ground to the ground
line, the signal to the signal line and the third pin is connected to a
positive power supply.
I have slightly simplfied the explanation because the Hall Effect
switch has to match the kind of pin [CMOS, TTL , etc] but typically
most seem to work.
So in reply to the general question will the Hall Effect switches
I supply for Black magic timers work with other timers ? Obviously they
would work with RedMagic but I do not know how any other
electronic timers work in sufficent detail to tell you.

small way) come into there own!I have a pet criow, noticed that he(or she?)
takes to the air in a leap! Then the flappinfg or rotating of wings to fly
begin. So, if a really man sized ORNI(MY short name fior iornithopter) Takes
to the air. The main problem as with all aircraft is getting into the air in
the first place! Perhaps some sort of rocket or catapult(Compressed air)
could be used to push a ORNI into a high enough trejectory to fly "like a

Why are there so many negatives in Free flight? You can't do this, you can't
do that, its outside the rules etc.,etc.,etc. Why can't we be more positive?
Like, just accept some proposals in the spirit in which they are proffered
and not look for some hidden factor which might put the idea beyond the
means of the viewer!! If it's not PURE freeflight, then it must be bad seems
a typical attitude. Thus radio is classed as a dirty word. But what about
using a radio control to transmit some of the onboard measurements such as
flight speed, angle of descent, angle during turns etc???? during flight? Is
there anyone who has done ANYTHING in this line??
