Big Als 2003
============
After very high winds Friday evening and Saturday morning
the 2003 Bissonnette Memorial was held Sunday, May 25th.
All six events were started and finished on the same day in
excellent flying conditions. F1G was the only event that
did not require a flyoff. Several flyers said that the
conditions were very tricky and the scores reflected the
conditions. F1A started out with five flyers in the flyoff
and ended with Norm Smith winning over Jim Parker in the
last round of the day at 7:50 pm. Each had made the five,
seven and nine minute flyoff flights. Junior flyer Ryan
Jones showed all the old pros how to win in a one round
flyoff with Blake Jensen. Randy Archer flew at the end of
the first flyoff round and made the five minute max with
the other three flyers flying at the start of the round
with no lift. Bob VanNest was the only flyer to max out
flying a Bob White designed model. F1H had eight entries
and four made the flyoff. Ernesto Busnelli secured the win
in the second flyoff round over Dallas Parker. Mike
Roberts had the better air in the third flyoff round over
Guy Menanno. It was unfortunate that Mother Nature sent so
many flyers home Saturday with the windy conditions. Those
who stayed had a great time. Results below.

No More Icarex......
====================`
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Got your attention? Well, after I got an email from someone who read an
article I wrote on Icarex, I had to do a bit of investigation. I called
Hand-em-High kites and talked with them on the subject. It seems that
they are no longer "legally" able to use the word Icarex to identify the
covering. She seemed very subdued when questioned on the matter. But,
they still handle the material and now it is the 1/2 oz Ripstop
Polycarbonate fabric. I was told it is exactly the same stuff. Same
stuff, different name.

So, Icarex is not dead, it just has been renamed!

Catapult Glider
===============
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I am one of a small but growing group of English flyers who are =
enjoying, and trying to popularize, Catapult Glder in this country. We =
have only had the class for a couiple of years over here and some of us =
have a lot to learn; I wonder if some of my experienced cousins over =
there are prepared to divulge a few secrets and shorten my learning =
time.

I do not think that glider design is the main problem. They seem to =
glide well enough and have managed a couple of seconds and thirds. They =
are of conventional proportions with about 50 percent CG. The most =
comfortable size for me, so far, is 16 inch span with weight around 18 =
grams.

I think the main problem is that I do not know what I am aiming for on =
launch and, if I did know what I wanted, how would I trim to get it? =
It is easy to get a safe launch. I just hold the glider in a near =
vertical right bank with the nose up perhaps 30 degrees and it does one =
turn of a shallow helix rolling out to a smooth glide overhead. Ok, it =
is safe, but it is not going to approach the heights and times reported =
from your side of the pond. So far I have limited my adjustments to =
slight left rudder and slight wash in on the left (port) wing. Both =
done by Gurney strips. If I try to reduce the bank angle or increase =
the verttical angle the transition is rubbish.

So what should I be looking for in bank angle, vertical angle, no of =
turns of the spiral, angle to the wind and so on? (I supose you do fly =
right left if right handed!). I find it difficult to see what angles I =
am using at launch. Would it be sensible to get a friend to watch your =
launches and tell you if you are being consistent? Do you record the =
launch pattern for each glider or do you force all your gliders to the =
same launch pattern?

Or have I missed the very essence of flying catapult glider altogether? =
Your help would be appreciated.

Best regards
John Barker - England

Due to both a personal conflict and the inability to find a suitable
alternate date, the Western FAI Challeng scheduled for August 30 & 31st
is canceled. I regret this decision and hope Northwest Flyers will
attend the Tangent Classic FAI meet August 22 & 23 in Oregon.

NorCal F1A flyoff
=================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The NorCal F1A flyoff, postponed due to adverse conditions at the end of the
contest in Sacramento, was decided at The Big Al over Memorial Day weekend.
The conditions were breezy around the Sunday 7 AM flyoff. And the winners are:

Pierre Brun 261 seconds
Brian Van Nest 240 seconds
Jim Parker 201 seconds
Martyn Cowley DNF

Nicely flown in very tricky conditions. Martyn had left the previous day
when the Big Al was postponed. Sunday got better after the flyoff but that is
"The Big Al Story" and for another to tell. Mike McKeever

Skyscrapers International Challenge

Skyscraper Challenge Report (May 25-26) by Aram Schlosberg

The weather Cassandras forecasting high winds and rain scared off some
flyers. But mother nature was much kinder to those who made it, with a
overcast Saturday with some drizzle and light fog and moderate wind.
Sunday was just spectacular, overcast, starting off with very light
morning winds followed by a long mid-day dead calm period. Due to the a
week's precipitation the field was wet, drenching may socks and
sneakers.
The surrounding corn field had just been planted, extending the field to
the far trees on the surrounding higher land.

The contest highlight was the F1B flyoff. In the first flyoff, John Clapp
flew early, but Jim Bradley, who had a motor blow, and Bob Biedron got
better air launching later. The 7 minute flyoff (a first ever in
Wawayanda) was flown from the end of the field. Bob got off to a
clean max while Jim had another motor blow and his second model's VIT
line did not disconnect, causing a dive that clocked at 13 seconds.
Taylor
Gunder was the highest scoring junior, dropping 20 seconds.

Andrei Kirilinko, the only F1C flier, clocked a perfect score.

There was drama in the last round for F1A and F1G. In F1A, Austin Gunder,
with a perfect score got into a time pressure on the last round/second
attempt and sub-maxed for third place. Omer Erguner maxed-out for first
place. Aram DTed late in the fifth round and came in fourth. Ben Thompson
was the highest scoring junior, placing 5th. Andrew Barron had a myriad of
technical problems in F1A.

In F1G, Larry Pelatowski maxed-out while John Clapp DTed early spoiling
an otherwise perfect score and putting him in a tie for third, resolved by
a flyoff with Bob Hatschek.

Dave Acton CDed the AMA events and was responsible for the financial
side as well as the first place awards. The three top flyers and the leading junior
in each event were awarded a certificate, portraying an Indian flying a glider,
drawn by the Canadian artist Mark Komza. Dick Ivers hit the jackpot,
walking away with two firsts and a second.

Hello Roger,
In current MA issue[July 2003] in Modeler's Mall[page 142]is an electric
timer, very light and small, 'that can be used for DTing FF competition
models.', using an 'electric match'[what is that?].
The info sez: 'Used by FAI Spacemodeling competitors around the world.'
Timer A is only 2.3gms with 1.5v cell battery, and sells for $35.
There are 2 'accuracy' levels listed...not exactly sure what that means,
but I sent an email with queries tonight.
You will find his website at: www.zitdt.com

This might be worth a good long look for all SEN readers!

Leeper

Posting of FAI F1C and FF items for sale

Please post the following:

I have begun to itemize my fathers FF items from his estate. There is a
variety of F1C related supplies. There are new selig timers (fan type), nelson
engines, titanium folder hubs, aluminum sheet for wing skins, contest balsa,
Kevlar fabric, a long tapered ground steel fuselage mandrel,
aluminum model box, plus many other items. I am looking for someone
to purchase all the items. I can
provide a detailed list of the items along with the asking price.

I have one Archterberg 100 inch 6 panel wing with stab for sale. Wing and
stab are as he had shipped them to me. I also have 1 wing wire and dihedral
connectors. I am asking $550 for the wing and stab, includes shipping.
Please respond to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and put "SCAT" in subject listing.
