30 grams of rubber. The first contest.

Desert Challenge, Taft Ca.

Its in the books. Great weather and Bogart again put on a fine show.
Peter Allnut had plenty of wood for a wonderful and much needed bon fire. I
flew with John Pratt this weekend and we put in alot of flights with the new
30 gm rule. Pratt was using several versions of 2001 rubber. He tried 26 and
24 strand motors. I used 12/97 and 05/99 rubber for the 2 days. I started
out with 28 strand motors which were very short 12 to 12 1/2" long.
Winding was limited to about 400 turns and that was pushing the envelope. I
broke several 28 strand motors trying to wind them up. I restranded to 26
grams and found a happy medium. I could get 420 to 440 winds on 26 strands.
Pratt claims he was getting 450+. He also broke alot of motors during the
weekend. Torque was up good for the burst and the cruise was a little down
from the 35 grams we had become accustom to. Early morning flights were down
probably 40 to 50' The air was typical taft with thermals in the morning. I
was getting 47 -48 second motor runs.
The only changes I made to the models was a little right thrust but
besides that everything else remained the same. Its going to be a challenge
now especially in the flyoff. Rubber testing and torque readings have become
much more important.
So that was my experience with the new rules. Phoenix will be the next
test.

Tan II status report.
=====================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

CURRENT STATUS:
The new location factory ran a small trial lot of Tan II in Dec. 2001.
While the rubber formula has
been stabilized, the new plant process is not. Most of the December run
was scrapped by the factory
prior to completion. Of the small amount that made it all the way
through the manufacturing process,
the test results by three (3) of my test crew were less than
satisfactory for contest grade Tan II. Results
showed the rubber (in 1/2 pound samples) ranged from good contest (1) to
good test flying rubber (2).
The end result is that the few pounds that we have were sold as " kit "
rubber.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:
A meeting has been scheduled for Jan. 24th ( after Eloy ) at the
factory with all of their key people,
myself, and our polymer chemist/ modeler/ consultant. ( a first ! ).
The goal of this meeting is to carefully review the process and controls
and to collectively decide on a corrective course of action to improve
process reliability.

CURRENT GAME PLAN:
A new small lot of 1/8" is to be scheduled, and if successful, is to be
followed up 30 days later by a large batch of all sizes.
Rest assured that collectively we all are working hard to get the new
location factory "up to speed"
on Tan II rubber.

MEANWHILE:
We have good 1/16" Tan II in stock. Works great in coupe, and the
Chinese love it for F1B.
Think of it, you can make up the equivalent of a 27 strand motor ! ( its
good upper body exercise )

Sincerely
John Clapp

Dear Roger,

Further to the brief mention of F1J in Issue 662, does anyone know if any enter
prising soul is importing Kalmikov 1cc engines into the UK? I'd be interested
to know.

FAI at Muncie
=============

Hosting a large international FAI contest at Muncie is not a good idea for
two reasons:

1. About a third of the time the wind is out of the SW forcing the flight
line to be placed downwind of a woods that produces a lot of turbulence. From
that location a 3-minute flight puts you into the trees of a cemetery or off
the field into private property. Neither is good.

2. Some private property owners are getting increasingly angry with free
flighters landing on their property. In years past landowners have forced the
local sheriff's department to suspend FAI contests. A large international FAI
free flight contest can only further strain the relationship and in fact
could be disastrous. Muncie is not generally a 3 minute field -- it's a 2
minute field for category lll contests.

The Answer

Hi Roger,

The answer has been found for the escalating cost of flying the F1 classes.
I am just sad that I didn't think of it first, and to think it was right
here in our pockets all the time. Look at the results of the F1J competition
at the King Orange International and you will find that all it takes to win
the "High Priced" F1 events is a ( not even new) coin. Just reach into your
pocket and what ever you pull out as long as it is a coin, car keys excluded
and flip it. I called Ron McBurnett after I read this (Sorry Ron) and we had
our own contest and never left the couch, the coin I used was found between
the cushions. Ok! just an example. Come on. After all the crying about "the
cost" "the expense" the drive across country and then, toss a coin?

Toss Straight up,

Daryl Perkins
