The 2002 Jr Team Selection committee has selected the 2002 Jr Team per the
approved Jr Team Selection Program. The Jr World Championship will be August
11-18 at Lucent, Slovakia.

Brian VanNest is the Jr Team Manager who will provide more information on the
team members and request donations for the Jr Team. We are pleased to
announce the 2002 Jr Free Flight team. In alphabetical order, the team
members are:

F1A
Micheal Avallone, Grand Rapids, MI.
Ben Coussens, Valencia, CA.
Dallas Parker North Hills, CA
F1B
Eddy Avallone, Grand Rapids, MI.
Taylor Gunder, Red Lion, PA
Ryan Jones, Avon Lake, OH
F1J
Austin Gunder, Red Lion, PA
John Lorbiecki, Hubertus, WI

Please note that Jon Schelps meet all requirements for the F1A team selection
consideration. He placed high in the America Cup Jr, point standing and would
have placed high in the Jr Team Selection ranking per the approved Program.
However, his parents withdrew him from consideration because they would be
unable to accompany him to the Slovak Republic this summer.

Thank you,
Jim Parker, Jr Team Scorekeeper

I recently received a phone call from David Mills informing me that Ed
Lidgard passed away on January 23. Ed was 83 years old and had been living in
a convelescent home suffering from the effects of Parkinson's Disease and
Alzheimers. Ed was the designer of the Sparky, which will be a featured model
at the 2002 SAM Champs.
Ed is survived by his wife.

Someone was looking for information as to what happened to Joe Klaus and his
Kustom Kraftmanship Co.
Darrin Albert has taken over Joe's business. His web-site is called
"Competition Model Supplies," and can be found at this URL:
http://www.competitionma.com/ It is also included in my list of model
suppliers at: http://home.earthlink.net/~rlipori/options.html

Where is Joe Klause?

In SEN issue 675 for Feb 12, 2002, John Lorbiecki writes, "Where is Joe
Klause"?

Joe sold his Kustom Kraftmanship business and stock to Darin Albert, a
combat flyer in Escondido, California. I don't know about Joe's health.
But, I do know he had arthritis and couldn't rework engines anymore.

The business name is Competition Model Airplane Parts and Accessories.

I just happened to run into this info while looking at Bob Lipori's
terrific webpage of Suppliers (SEN issue 671 for Jan. 31, 2002).
The website for Lipori's supplier list is:
www.home.earthlink.net/~rlipori/options.html
Look for Competition Model Parts on the list. Darrin has all the parts
KK had, including the custom fine thread needle valve for Cox Tee Dees.
There is even an odrer sheet that one can print out.

The email address for Darrin Albert is:

I hope this helps your friend in Alaska, John.
And, anyone else who may be wondering.

Joe sold the business to a Darrin Albert, now trading as 'Competition Model
Airplane Part and Accessories" www.competitionma.com with assurances that
he was carrying on with production of the items previously offered. He now
appears to be selling off the stock on Ebay, with no production apparent in
any form. May be contacted at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I cannot help with Joe's current location or health, but the business has
been sold, and is now known as 'Competition Model Airplane Parts and
Accessories'. The website is at : www.competionma.com

The range is pretty well the same as KK offered. all the usual fine thread
needles etc, still available. The modified cylinders for Cox 020/049/09 are
not available and have not been available for quite a few years, not since
the mid 90's.

Long motors
===========
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The three elements that make up a high climb are: low wing loading, high
aspect ratio and thirdly, POWER. In a Wakefield or F1B the wing loading is
pretty well fixed at 16dm2 so that is no help in improving climb. Secondly,
Aspect ratio. The original AA29 and 30 were A/R of about 15. Gradual
increases to spans of around 70" have come from development which makes the
A/R about 17. Note that AA seems to have abandoned the higher A/R that comes
from a span of around 76" seeming to indicate that we are in the region of
RN losses. So not much to be gained there, either. Which leaves us with
POWER. Going to the long motors might increase the llength of the motor run
but you will have no power duriing the latter part of the run. Louis Dupuis
tried this approach at the 93 W/C and came cropper in the first round wiith
a 2.10 DESPITE thhere being little or no vertical movement. There are others
but I can't recall them at this time. Matthews/Rowsell told me in Sazena
that research showed that the highest climb was with a run of 20 secs(40)
and the optimum, 120 secs if my memory is corect. Note that the mean of
these two is close to what is being used on 40g, a result of trial and error
and through competition,at that time. Add to this the heavy rear end which
will require a larger stab to provide better damping when disturbed and you
reduce the wing area and A/R, two items needed for the climb
Wantzenriether's analysis and others stress the necessity of keeping the
rear end light, partly because of the relatively small stab The effect of
weight on the rear end is the square, remember. If you want to add weight at
the rear to get the CG right or make the nose long enough to allow the prop
to fold without touching the wing LE, as I had to do with my tailles CDH,
then it is better to add large amounts just behind the wing raher thhan a
smaller amount much further back to get the same balance.

Roger,

Axel Freed asks about F1E. At the risk of appearing to plug a
publication within the hallowed cyber-walls of SEN, there are a couple of=

fine articles on F1E magnet duration gliders in the 1990 and 2001 BMFA Fr=

Flight Forum Reports. The first is by Steve Philpott and the more recent
one is by Trevor Faulkner; both are leading UK F1E flyers and past team

NFFS may still have the Reports, each of which includes numerous other
papers on free-flight topics, but I certainly have stocks; the 1990 one i=

Hi Roger,

Do you know who is the president for the lost hills
association.

The knights of the round table (a controlline
club)sent them a check at Joel Cheslers encouragement
(he is an old brooklyn skyscraper) and if they send
him a thank you that he can show his club it would be
a nice touch.

Best regards,
