News for Cyclon .061 owners....

Hi all,

Just ran into something that may be of interest to Cyclon owners. As
many know, my son is on the Junior F1J team. Because of this we have
been doing allot of engine running. We had acquired two Cyclons from the
Gunders. It so happened that one of them in particular had a problem in
that it would not hold a needle valve setting. We kept reducing the
compression with shims but it only helped a small amount. I modified the
combustion chamber shape, which helped a small amount but still would
not hold a setting. It would start, run for a short time, and then
drastically change rpm. sometimes to the point of quitting. I was
somewhat lost.

After a night of screwing around, I finally pulled the engine apart and
started to look at it, micrometer in hand. everything looked fine.
However, after measuring the piston, I found that the bottom of the
pistom measured .4400" diameter. However, the top was mushroomed out to
.4403"! Using a machinist stone, I worked on the piston carefully and
slowly removed the mushroomed material until it was once again .4400"
diameter. I also slighlty broke the sharp edge at the top of the piston.

Note that this engine has much time on it. Craig stated to me that the
engine always had a problem, to such a point that they could not get a
full run on it and planted many a carbon tree because of bad runs.

After making the modification, the engine fired right up, needles very
well, and runs pretty consistantly thru a full bladder. Problem solved!
I looked at the other engine (note that both were rear exhaust versions)
and it showed the same problem. I modified that piston also and I could
suddenly add compression to it and soon it reacted the same, with a good
needle valve range.

If you are having problems with needle valve setting (engine quitting
after a short time running) look at the piston. Care must be taken as
you can easily screw up the seal. Hope this helps our fellow flyers!!

Too many bikes

I now have three dirt bikes. According to my wife, that is at least one too
many. As a result, my trusty 1980 Honda XL-100 is for sale. Easy starting
and strong running.
New tires, sprocket, brakes. Yes it has a clutch and a 4-stroke engine for
good power at low rpm. Can be seen in Muncie at most contests.

Finders bleepers
================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Finding models in undergrowth has been a problem for modellers like myself,
who fly on Chobham Common in Surrey, England, for many years. Even tracker
bugs are not always successful. I have walked past a model only to find it,
virtually accidentally, on my way back having given up. The problem was
solved by fitting a bleeper, weighing about 4-5 grams and powered by a 3 volt
coin cell which can be heard up to several yards away and is very
directional. So try if chaps. Even in a cornfield you will be able to go
straight to your model.

Long flights and short retreivals to all.

Herd of foreigners

> like an ass and we weren't getting the full story. Also, in '93, at the
> Sierra Cup, a "herd of foreigners went stomping through her fields and
> wouldn't or couldn't talk to her" (her words). She hasn't forgotten that.

In '93 us Finns lost one glider to the lands of a lady we had been warned
about. Quoting Juha Heikkinen:

"The plane obviously landed on the fields of the said lady. We walked
through in a wide line [no trackers back then], we had been warned, so we
went along ditches and definately avoided stomping anything.

The lady then started yelling at the guy closest to the house.

We tried to say that we have a model landed a few handred meters away, and
we would just like to pick it up. All she could reply to us was 'this is
my property. Get out!' We just wondered when she will pick up the
shotgun... What a nice lady!"

So we seemed to have a serious communication problem then.

Roger:

It doesn't make a lot of difference to me, because I know where I finished in
the Big Al's F1J event (and have the beer mug to show for it), but thought
you might want to know, for the sake of accuracy. The recently published
finish positions were not correct. I finished second in F1J, behind Ed
Carrol and ahead of Guy Mennano. I don't know if the rest of the places were
accurately shown.

Big Al etc news
================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Now for the latest news,
Dean Clark won the Big Al Shootout F1A event on Sunday, using his brand
new Baby AL!!!
UP & OFF, NEVER CIRCLETOWED ONCE!!!
How about that, he picked air from the ground every flight and beat
Pierre in 5 min FO round with launch in beaut air with 30 sec remaining
in 10 min time window.
Ken Oliver was CD running the show & just about had a fit & XXXXXXX his
pants, he was so worried Dean would be too late! It was Beautiful.
The day was good, with calms, shifting air, thermal-puff winds and
moderate breezes from 9:30am-5:30pm(same thing on Sat for the
mini-events). It would be windy from 6am to 930, get better til 530 or
so, then blow hard from west(like am) ending flights for the day.
Seemed a bit strange to me. Of course Taft, being Taft,
had better conditions, since it is protected on the west unlike LH.
I went there on Mon early, flew OHLG & CLG, winning both easily, since
the morn was very nice.
Oh BTW, I ended third in F1A @ Big Al comp dropping 4 sec in rd 5, using
my oldest Baby AL, Vasi. You made that for me in '99 and it still goes
very well, even after repairs from the rough wind tumbles it has taken!!
It picked up some weight during this time, but I switched to the lighter
NMH batt pack and moved weight forward to keep CG @ 84 mm from LE.

Over & out.
Lee
