Mr McSCAT,

In reply to the question about Joe Maxwell. Joe stopped
his excellent modelling enterprise some years ago so no
longer supplies jigs etc. A few of us have tried
everything to tempt him back including the supply of
large amounts of vintage 1973 McTavish haggis ("A wee
bite before ye fall over"), all to no avail.

However, Joe has produced a small book "The Secrets of
Aids for Advanced Aeromodelling" which tell how he made
his excellent products - I can recommend it for those
wild, windy, non-flying days. Joe can be contacted at :-

Roger,
You just had to know this was coming. You knew I wouldn't be able to resist.
I realize you are not really trying to cause trouble among the masses. You must
realize of course that there is another way to look at this situation.
Such as:

It sure is nice to see technical information even if it is not magical timers '
and gummy bands.

I don't know if you have looked in the direction of the POWER flight line
lately, but if you had, you would have seen that the .061 in question is
not a kiddies toy, and that it is mostly the silver haired and unhaired
using them.

Somewhere here is a moral, Morrell: How about, "Take a kiddy to the
field today".

Graham Bryant asks about sources of audio bleepers. Maplins (UK
multi-outlet electronics supply operation) list several, but a simple
additional circuit may be needed to enable them to produce a pulsed rather
than continuous output. I believe Hillcott Electronics have ready-to-go
devices aimed at the R/C glider people, and there are sometimes ads in the
R/C mags (sorry !) for 'lost model finders', which are presumably
similar.

Hi, Vasily!

I can't agree with you completely. It is possible to
consider new rules, as a possibility to each sportsman take part
in the fly-off. I consider, that necessary to divide for itself points,
which are obtained in the first round on two component. The first part
is 180 points, which you guaranty received if flyed more that 180.
Also additional premium, which needs still to be earned.
I don't like that the sportsmens must make first flights in
various conditions. I think in one hour weather varies noticeable. But,
skill of the sportsman to foresee weather it his skill also.
I think, that it is impossible to conduct internal competitions
by the old rules, and take part in Euro or World Championships with new.
We should be prepared for Championship in similar rules and conditions.
For us the rules must be Bible, which we should strictly follow. We can
discuss rules to introduce corrective amendments etc. But the rules cannot
be changed in a during of competitions, differently to not avoid
misunderstanding and scandals. We should follow them strictly.
For confirmation to that can be ours screening system. It has
allowed to avoid many possible scandals for shaping team members. And it
happens so, because for all this strict rule and everyone are on an
equal footing.

For Roger:
We have in Lugansk rewarding of winners and prize-giving of
Ukraine Super Cup 2001 last weekend. I want to congratulate Brian
Van Nest from USA, which has taken the second place in F-1-H and
John Bailey from Great Britain, which has taken the third place
in F-1-J. These guys very successfully flyed past summer in stages
of Ukraine Super Cup 2001. We express delight by their outcomes.
We invite all wishing to take part in Ukraine Super Cup 2002.
Forthcoming stages of a 2002:
1) Ukraine Championship June 21-23 Kharkov
2) Verbitskiy Cup (World Cup) July 5-7 Kharkov
3) Antonov Cup (World Cup) July 12-14 of Kiev
4) Ukraine Cup September 20-22 Kiev.

Best regards. Igor.

Extended Maxes
==============
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I read Vasily's appeal regarding the extended max with much sympathy.
However, he is not correct when he talks about the CIAM 'setting it up'.
The proposals were published in enough time for each countries delegates
to be fully briefed on how to vote.

The UK delegate was instructed to vote against the proposal, but as it
was approved there must have been support for it from others.
The reason for the UK decision was that if you are trying to cut fly-off
numbers down from about 50 to a more manageable 5 or so, it doesn't take
long to figure out that your chances of being in a flyoff are
significantly reduced. If you are an above average flyer and got into one
international fly off per year, you have to wonder if you will now live
long enough to get into another.Something of a discouragement if you are
an average flyer like me who rarely made the old 3.30 first round in
F1A.

But, don't complain after the event; make sure that your governing body
studies rule change proposals in good time, and that they brief their
delegates on how to vote.

Skyscraper Challenge, FAI results
=================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Here are the FAI free flight results from the Skyscraper
International Challenge, May 25-26, 2002, in Wawayanda, NY.
The weather was superb, with light variable winds. Ron Felix
ran the flight line and did a great job. The fliers accomodated
a rugged schedule in the big FAI events, with round one held at
6 pm Saturday and round two (with the Super-max) at 6:30am early
Sunday. This was one of the best competitions in the East I can
recall in many years. The competition was especially close in
F1B with Lee Wang, David Ellis, and John Clapp each having a
shot at the win in the last round. Junior team members Taylor
Gunder and Ryan Jones also flew well. Junior Sarah Radziunas
flew in her first F1B competition and she shows much potential,
closing strong with a max while several others faltered that round.
In F1A Junior Ben Thomson flew a fully-equipped carbon-winged
model that he constructed entirely himself. Junior Josh Revkin,
who won the Skyscraper meet last fall with his Checkmate,
suffered the disappointment of the flyaway of his new model on
a practice flight. In F1C Bob Gutai's winning 5 minute flyoff
flight (Sunday afternoon) journeyed around various parts of the
field before landing only about 50 meters from where he launched.
In the Mini events, Tom Ioeger, Chuck Markos, and Austin Gunder
(Junior Team member) maxed out Saturday to win F1G, F1H, and F1J,
respectively. There were a total of 31 competitors (46 entries)
in the FAI events, plus some, such as Art Ellis, who, by their
own choice, were so busy helping many others they didn't have a
chance to fly. --Andrew Barron

Dear Roger,
I just received a sample of a fuselage front head for F1E glider, from
Jaromir OREL.
Jaromir is well known as an F1A flyer and also as the producer of "OK Timer".
This F1E front head is just perfect and very well made. This is just the
part you really need to fly F1E. He sells it 68 Euros, and it is also
possible to buy the 1450mm long carbon boom which fits with the front
end for 28 Euros.
Catalog can be obtain via e-mail to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Jaromir speaks Czeck and German, and his daughter Jana speaks (and
writes) English very well.

Location Beepers

Model Location Beepers.

Re Graham Bryant's request for information on audio location beepers for
models, I offer the following. A couple of Nationals ago, I put a power
model into head high wheat, and although the onboard Vin Morgan radio
beacon got me to the right field, no amount of triangulation could
pin-point the model. A beeper would have saved the day, so I determined
to make some up. I started with a circuit by Chris Edge published in
'Aeromodeller', May 1982. It worked well, but its 9v battery, buzzer
that measured 18x22x25mm, 555 chip, and all-up weight of 40g made it
suited only to models that needed ballast (which, in fairness, was part
of its design brief). What I wanted was a device that was much smaller
and as light as possible (say under 10g), could be moved from one model
to another, used a commonly available battery, made a loud and
distinctive noise, and looked good.

There seemed to be two aspects to the noise production side of things
-
first making the sound, and then getting it to beep on and off.
Canabalising a gimmick key ring in the form of a mini 'light sabre'
yielded a tiny piezio buzzer and amplifier circuitry that drove the
buzzer to a high pitched warble using two 1.5v button cells. Next,
something to turn the buzzer on and off - any circuit that flashed an
LED would do. It was found in a clip-on warning flasher made for night
cyclists or joggers. A bonus was the tiny on/off switch. For ultra
simplicity and light weight, the buzzer could be used on its own, but in
use an intermittent sound really stands out, while a continuous tone
seems to blend in with any background sounds and is much harder to hear
at a distance, and definitely harder to zero-in on. With some delicate
sawing and filing, both components were reduced to the smallest size
while retaining solder points for the required wiring. The flasher
circuit was wired in between the buzzer amplifier and the buzzer itself.
All the components were then epoxied to an aluminium faceplate measuring
20x40mm. The on/off switch protrudes through the faceplate. Having the
battery separate, rather than mounted on the faceplate, is more
convenient in tight installations. Power comes from a 3v lithium cell
(#2025 or #2035) or two 1.5v button cells can be used - for each unit
constructed as above, I ended up with four button cells, so these have
been used and have worked well.

All up weight is just under 10g, too heavy for the likes of P-30, but I
use them on larger rubber models, power and glider models. In the air
they are audible up to about 200m, but on the ground this drops to about
25m - doesnt seem like much, but they are not intended as the =
primary
location device, just that bit extra help when the crops are high.

For New Zealand readers, both devices used for components were found at
The Warehouse ('Where everyone gets a bargain'). Alternative sources for
the intermittent function appear in abundance just before Christmas in
the form of flashing noses, reindeer antlers adorned with flashing LEDs
and other jolly seasonal stuff.

Wishing you a swift recovery,
Bernard Scott.

ROGER.
WANTED TO LET EVERY ONE KNOW THAT I JUST FINISHED
BUILDING A F1P PUPPY.
IN TRIBUTE TO THE ALIEN I HAVE NAMED THIS MODEL THE
PINK PUPPY.
IT IS A MODIFIED SUMMER WIND BY GALBREATH.
I TALKED WITH DOUG ABOUT THE MODIFICATIONS AND HE SAID
IT SHOULD BE A REAL GOOD FLYER.
RON FELIX DID ALL THE MATH ON THE PLANS AND I FINELY
GOT IT TOGETHER.
THIS COULD VERY WELL BE THE FIRST F1P THAT IS
COMPLETED.
ANY BODY ELSE GOT ONE FINISHED YET?
I PLAN TO FLY THIS AT THE GATHERING OF THE TURKEYS
MEET ON THE 16 OF JUNE AT PENSICOLA FL.
SHOULD BE INTERESTING.
IF ANY BODY WANTS THE MODS TO YHE SUMMER WIND PLANS
THEY CAN CONTACT ME AT MY E MAIL ADRESS.
THX DON.
