USA individuals and teams win big at the Indoor World Champs !

The 2002 Indoor World Champs were just completed in the salt mines in Romania,
7-12 October 2002.

The USA individuals and teams faired very well !

Congratulations to all !

Here are some hightlights:

USA won both the Individual and Team awards in both the Junior and Senior divis
ions!

The Junior performances were outstanding, almost eclipsing that of the Seniors !

Jim Richmond won the Senior division with times of 36:15 and 35:29

Doug Schaefer won the Junior division with times of 36:12 and 33:04

Ben Saks was 2nd in the Junior division with times of 33:10 and 33:04

Both the Junior and Senior teams won their respective team divisions.

John Kagen of the USA, competing as defending World Champion, was third in the
Senior division with times of 32:55 and 31:15

Doug Schaefer's best flight of 36:12 was only 3 sec short of Jim Richmond's 36:
15 for the single flight high time award !

Doug Schaefer's time would have placed him 2nd place in the Senior Division !

Ben Saks' time would have placed him 3rd in the Senior Division !

The Junior team actually had a team score that also would have won the Senior t
eam award for the USA !

Mathew Chalker who joined the Junior team in August as first alternate, placed
a respectable 6th with only 2 months to prepare !

In summary, Richmond wins and the Juniors ruled !

Here is a snapshot of the results, with USA placings:

Junior Divison:
1. Doug Schaefer, USA, 36:12 + 33:04 = 69:16
2. Ben Saks, USA, 33:10 + 33:04 = 66:14
3. Somesan Horatiu, ROM, 27:53 + 27:26 = 55:19
6. Matther Chalker, USA, 25:58 + 24:34 = 50:32

Junior Teams:
USA, 186:02
ROM, 139:25
POL, 127:02

Senior Division:
1. Jim Richmond, USA, 36:12 + 35:29 = 71:44
2. Popa Aurel, ROM, 33:03 + 32:09 = 65:12
3. John Kagan, USA, defending champion, 32:55 + 31:15 = 64:10
6. Larry Cailliau, USA, 31:25 + 30:22 = 61:57
10. Steve Brown, USA, 31:23 + 29:28 = 60:51

Senior Teams:
USA, 194:32
ROM, 181:17
GBR, 180:28

Roger,

I haven't received a SEN since issue 746! Is there a
problem?

Livotto 2002 Supermax

At the Livotto we all flew or hoped to fly the Supermax (F1A: 240 sec) in
the first round. The results show an extended, counting max (F1A only 21
0 sec). What happened, did I miss something?

Thanks, Peter

F1D WC

Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Roger,

Just tried to forward Edmund Liem's report on Saltmine results.

Jim Richmond won his 7th WC 35:29 + 36:15 = 71:44
Aurel Popa ROM 65:12
John Kagan USA (defending WC) 64:10

Team USA #1

Impressive Jr results:

Doug Schaeffer USA 33:04 36:12 = 69:16
Ben Saks USA 66:14
Somesan Horatiu ROM 55:19

Matt Chalker, last minute sub was 6th to give Jr Team USA #1

While outdoor Jr activity boosted by factory models and modelling parents,
indoor appears to be result of SO program and great coach/mentors.

Note Doug & Ben would have been 2,3 in open class and Doug just 3 sec short
of Richmond's high time and 3 min higher than next open flyer!

Pity the poor SO beginners who run into these wunderkind in the future. Be
like playing Tiger Woods or the Williams Sisters. Also how are the SO
coaches going to cope?

Perhaps my concern for the 55cm rule changes keeping Yanks off the podium
was somewhat pessimistic. Congratulations to all competitors for surviving
a week in the mine.

Just reporting,
H

2003 - sympo

Gentleman
I read with interest the request for articles for the 2003 sympo for the
NFFS on SCAT. I fly as some of you know hlgs and clgs seriously and as I
take so much from free flight - love to give as much if not more back.
Gives me more pleasure giving than taking. Anyway - I wondered if the NFFS
may be interested in something on hlgs - in detail as I am sure that I can
get more people flying the classes. How about our friends in the Ukraine as
I dearly hope that you may have a go sometime (will even send plans etc if
it gets you flying).
I never expected to hear back from Louis - last night I did and Louis was
very enthusiastic and has asked for a rough draft which I intend to start in
the next three weeks and will work on solidly to reach a standard that
people will be proud to read.
I would however, like to ask for feedback as what would people like to see
in a article on the classes. Louis gave me a few excellent pointers that I
will include for sure - I would like this to be something extremely
comprehensive that all would understand and would benefit from inc building
and trimming tips. My idea being that once completed - there is no excuse
why everyones glider will not fly.
What else would people like to read about please?
Many thanks and hope to hear from you all soon.
My best wishes and have a great day.
Kevin Moseley

In the October issue of Free Flight News, flyoff times at the UK BMFA 5th
Area Centralized on September 1, the first five scores in Team Open Rubber
are noteworthy.

P Ball 7:30+88.36
G Ferrer 7:30+77.30
I Davitt 7:30+64.14
D Hipperson 7:30+28.51
J Leadbeater 7:30+28.04

The lady who was timing Ferrer had to relinquish her following the model due
to exhausted arms and eyes. The one timing Ball had tripod-mounted
binoculars. Roses to all.

Mini rounds

Roger:

Some time back I put a request in the SEN to all CDs that we make the
mini event rounds 45 minutes. The majority of the fliers who contacted=
me were in favor, but there were a couple who were strongly opposed.

This weekend we flew 45 minute mini rounds. To the best of my knowledge
this caused no one any problem. I am sure the the fellows in the
marathon fly-offs appreciated greatly being able to start home and hour
and 15 minutes earlier than they would have had we flown one hour
rounds.

I hope the other CDs will note this. Thanks Juan!

Because events beyond my control I was not able to get this issue out before
last weekend - this meant that the writings of Thorkildesn and McKeever
exhorting people to attend the San Vallers ebent and Sierra Cup
respectively did not get to their desired audience ...

The Sierra Cup has the best ever weather - Rumpf,Blackam R, Verbitsky
Full results will follow when they arrive.
