The bow scale to which Roger refers was purchased from a sporting
goods store (``Sports Authority'' if memory serves me right).
It is the ``Hand Held Bow Scale'' manufactured by Cardoza Creations, Inc,
of Oroville, California. The price was $29.99. It measures forces
from 15 to 90 pounds and it slides a marker so that the reading can
be made after the force is released. Roger mentioned the purpose of
measuring rubber motor pull, which should be of some benefit for my
son John who is figuring out F1B. Another purpose is to test tow force
for F1A launch of a practice flight. -- Andrew

Roger, For anyone planning to go to the Australian World Cup events over Easter
and seeking accomodation in Narrendera the situation is chaotic
thanks to the hot r od gathering at the same time.
However I have just had an e-mail to a query send last December to the Murrimbi
dgee
Agricultural College 20K from Narrendera(I forgot colleges close
down over Chri stmas).
They have simple motel units available at Aus $65 a night, double bed, toaster,
kettle and bar fridge.
The college may not have feeding facilities as they close for Easter, but
Narre ndera is only 20K away.

At the time of writing they have only one booking, for a scruffy
old man and hi s delightful wife.

Roger:
I am not certain whether you put ads of this sort on SEN, but if you do, I
have recently obtaining as part of a purchase of model equipment, two
Wakefield timers: They are both three function timers. One is a Starline and
the other is a Czech version of a Starline. The Starline weighs 14 gr. and is
listed by FAI Models at $35.00. The other is 16 grams and is a bit larger in
the faceplate. If anyone is interested in both of these NIP timers, I can
make them one very good deal.
Thanks.

I don't see why not. As Chuck says, its within the rules and might help to
preserve small fields as well as allowing us to use fields that have
altitude restrictions.
I don't think that sensor calibration is an issue; I have an IGC approved
data logger. This is a solid state barograph used for soaring altitude
measurements; it measures pressure altitude. It was calibrated once by its
maker. As the manual does not mention recalibration the sensor is presumably
rather stable.
However pressure altitude does vary from day to day as well as during the
day so the ground level pressure would need to be reset for each flight.
This need not be a problem; it would be easy for a micro controller-based
d/t to automate this process. Each time the d/t timer is switched on it
could read the sensor and record that as its ground level reference for the
flight.
Sensor sensitivity should not be a problem; although the logger is only
accurate to +/- 5 metres up to 20,000 feet it would be good enough for a
d/t. In fact modern solid state pressure sensors are much more accurate than
that; a solid state variometer can detect altitude changes from about 10
feet/min upwards.
I'd suggest that a talk with soaring instrument makers (for instance Borgelt
or Cambridge) might provide useful input on size, weight and costs.

Tom, who?

Hi, Hardy. Without disturbing my Materhorn of papers I'll
give a guess that Tom's name is Peadon. Fast Richard and
two of his buddies had an in-house contest with HLG designs.
I think Tom was involved. There was a US KID and a Boll
Weevil and ....Fast Richard? (Flash?" There was a magazine
article that became a classic on how to. The gliders are
still kitted and flown. I sure miss old charisma Dick with
his cut-off bibbies and tall tales of modeling going ons.
I remember with great fondness your spoof on the Snyder
Swamp sinkhole. I thought it hilarious. It took long enough
to see the light of day, though.
