The project of an ornithopter

Dear Mr. Morell!
The Russian engineer - aircraft designer living in Moscow, Koumanin Vladimir
V. has developed the flying vehicle with a flapping wing (ornithopter) and
has created its dynamically similar radio-controlled flying scaled model
1:10. http://ckbpoliot.narod.ru/photoalbum.html
Takeoff weight of model 450 grams, wing span is 1600 mm. The model
successfully
has undergone flight test on all modes of flight.
The developer has videofilms about flights the ornithopter.
Both ornithopter, and its model are intended for record flights.
Wishing to accept creative participation in construction and financing of
the full-scale flying vehicle and maintenance of its record flights, we ask
to address to the address: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
The full-scale flight vehicle should have wing span about 16 m, length of 12
m and take off weight of 450-500 kg.
The developer knows, that all attempts of an establishment of a records are
undertaken by the claimants at own risk, on what he and notifies all wishing
to respond to his proposal.
All record results of flights can be brought in the Guinness book of
records.
Thank you,
Aleksandr Pugachenko

Bernard Boutillier displays a flawed perception of the issue :
" If it's not a joke,..." *
Our most serious issues we disarm with ' jokes '.

This one got Bernard's attention.
That says that it's a serious issue,
That it's true,
That his Ox is goared.

When he refuses to acknowledge the cloak of humor
and wants to argue the issue,
all is lost.
( as Rimbaud said, ' ....innocent of all spelling ' )

Bernard might as well argue against the million dollar polo pony.

Waterman formulae incomplete...

Bob Waterman has evidently lost touch with reality.

The corrected formula: Social insecurity income + non-living wage job
+ winning lottery/robbing bank = getting geared.

Despite my monetary frustration I think that banning gears -- or even
handicapping them to neutralize their apparent advantage would be a
bad move. We knew it was coming. If the door was going to be slammed
shut the rules should have anticipated the problem and been changed
years ago-- long before the fact. In fact I even made such a belated
suggestion in SEN ... then Verbitsky let the cat out of the bag in New
Zealand the week after. That changed everything. I even got tapped to
do a Sympo article praising it.

I am bothered by off-the-wall suggestions to change engine
specifications. The result would be catastrophic. I can't imagine
Henry Nelson rubbing his hands in glee and diving into an .06 project.
I can remember visiting Johnny Brodbeck at his K&B factory and being
shown barrels of exhaust extensions to accommodate projected tuned
pipes for the .15 FAI special. At that very moment --In one of the
dumbest moves ever -- the pipe was banned. .

I don't think the model specifications should be tampered with. They
are wonderful creations. If winning is everything at the W.C. level
then a geared engine appears a necessity. That does not mean one
cannot fly an standard airplane successfully ... and especially back
at home base. Every ship in one's stable doesn't have to be so
equipped.

Personally, I would love to see composite structures banned... as long
as there was no wing span limitations. Boy, would that give folders
the BIG advantage! Or will "folders" be banned also? Nah. lets leave
specs alone. There is no grass roots level of interest out there that
would see meaningful numbers rush into the event because of
simplifications. We can't turn the clock back. Besides, we do see
people expressing interest because of the non-toy image that FAI
projects.

I do have a suggestion for those wanting to eliminate the need for
gearing at all costs. But the cure may be more unpalatable than the
disease. The big advantage of gearing is in the phenomenal
acceleration possible. A possible way to get around the need for
gearing is to use a form of the discus launch that has revolutionized
R.C. HLG. If I can ever achieve the level of guts needed I would like
to try slinging a folder upside down, set in a bunt position that
will bring it over in an outside loop to a perfect transition at the
top. Talk about spectacular! The question remains whether or not the
80 mpn (?) head start (allowing a higher pitched prop) would make up
for the extra distance traveled. In experimenting with folding HLG AMA
type gliders the general idea works -- although they do not adapt to
the discus straight armed style because off their small size. An
advantage with launching at a moderate angle straight into the wind is
that by vectoring through the increasing velocities of wind sheer
encountered the climb acceleration of the ship is increased. Big time.
If you scoff at this idea, just keep in mind that some once thought
that Tucker and Edsel Ford were crazy.

(An important disclaimer for those who rush in where free flight
angels fear to tread --A normal free flight CANNOT be launched in
this fashion!)

For the interested reader here is a wonderful site to explore: It
does serve to get the juices going!

Round length for mini events

Roger:

At the recent Patterson competition we were blessed with very light
winds, especially on Sunday. (The first round excepted.) Retrieving took
only a few minutes for the majority of the flights. The only problem was
a light haze. Consequently, the pairs of contestants who timed each
other usually had the round completed within 20 minutes. Then came the
hard part---the long wait until the next round started. As the day wore
on there was a nearly unanimous opinion that the rounds should be
shortened to 45 minutes. (One was arguing for 30 minutes.)

There are 2 or 3 contests, including the MM 14 rounder, that fly the
mini events in 45 minute rounds. I feel that 45 minute rounds should be
the standard rather than the exception. I would like to see this
discussed at length in the SEN under the heading "Attention CD's".

Power Events - Quanity Of
========================

Roger,

Terry made a good point as to the quantify of power events ever
increasing causing dilution of the contestant pool for each event. This
applies to NFFS events as well as AMA events. The proliferation of
events is also happening in rubber and glider but they have a long way
to go to catch up with the 6 Nos Gas, 5 AMA Power, and 3 Classic Power
events that are on the books.

Taken as a whole the Nos/Classic/AMA Power classifications seem to offer
a nice range of technology opportunities from proven/fixed moderate
performance designs through almost anything goes so lets not tinker with
this aspect. Instead why not consider combining the engine class sizes
into the same three as Classic Power, i.e. 1/2A, A/B, and C/D. This
change would obsolete only 1/4A and Early 1/2A Nos airplanes - two
events I fly but would not mind loosing. Sure this may not sit too
well with a few out there and would take a lot of coordination to make
happen but we have three years to get it done in time for the next AMA
rules change.

2002 National Cup
=======================

Roger,

The contest schedule, rules, and forms for the 2002 National Cup have
been sent out to the CDs from past contests and will be posted on the
NFFS web site. The schedule is very rough at this point with only a few
contests confirmed near the beginning of the year. I would like to
request that anyone out there who is planing to hold a contest in 2002
please notify me as to the particulars of their contest if they haven't
already done so. This applies even to repeat contests from last year to
ensure that I get the dates and planned events correct. A "Pre Contest
Information Form" is available for this purpose. The contest schedule
will include a listing of National Cup Events that are being flown at
the particular contest. This should help those seeking the Cups plan
what contests they need to attend. However to be useful it requires
early, accurate submittal of contest info.

One rule has changed this year which will encourage a bit more travel
and planning. In the past 3 scores from a site were allowed in the six
score total for an event. For 2002 we have gone to allowing two scores
per site in the six score total similar to the America's Cup.
