Hi:

I understand that the model plane flying area of Mile Square Park is no
longer available. Something about an extended golf course...

Can you tell me where these have been moved and a contact?

Thanks in advance.

Very interesting views on stab theory!

I have suffered when flying in strong turbulent/windy thermals that sometimes t
he
model starts to tighten the glide turn and spin in for a while.
I have discarded a too big vertical fin as most of the time it flies ok. Will m
ore
incidence on the inner wing help or has it something to be with tailplane secti
on?

Need for speed

Hi Roger and all SCAT readers,

This is just a little something about how the last couple of weekends were
spent, You know power flyers aren't happy unless we get our weekly dose of
fuel on our clothes. I received a call from Terry Kerger a couple weeks ago.
He told that he and Matt Kruse were going to go out a see how fast a new
1/2- A Proto Speed with Cyclon for power was. Curious about the Cyclon
engine I thought this would be a nice distraction and never being more then
a spectator at speed contests this would be a good experience for me.

Forgive me for the fact that this is not a story about Free Flight, But it
is about Free Flighters learning about drag, static rpm, unloaded rpm,
propeller diameter versus pitch
diameter. And between rounds we talked about free flight stuff, never to far
away..........

After many combinations of propeller size and type, head spacing, nitro
content, in a non-contest situation we had still not reached the speed that
was needed for a record attempt, But the speed and sounds had caught the
eyes and ears of other speed fliers and some came over to see what 3 Free
Flighters were up to......One of the guys said "next Sunday there is a
little speed contest here (Whittier Narrows) and that we should come" So
back we went, but before that, Saturday Terry and Matt went back to work on
the combinations some more. Sunday we showed up cool and calm, did some hot
laps and entered the contest. With Matt at the controls, Terry start, tune
and launch and me model holder, fueler, pit boy, not glamorous, but a lot of
fun.

The first run was a bit slower then we had seen in the past runs but still
faster then anyone else. Second run after raising the head again, different
propeller, speed was increased and after this round held First place. Not
bad for the first time that Matt ever built a speed model and competed in a
speed contest, there is something to be said for this accomplishment. At
this point one the speed guys offered an open area outside the park and
suggested we could fly hand launch gliders there, He may have been trying to
tell us something?. Third and last round coming one of the other competitors
a Jr. / Sr. record holder (now in his forties) was very busy looking for
speed in his flight box. Terry offered up one of his propellers to this guy
and we went out to fly the final round, ran the best time of the day in 1/2-
A Proto and Matt won his first Speed contest first time out. Fun was had by
all. The propeller that Terry loaned out helped the guy's model go a bit
faster but it was not enough.

Thank you for letting us share our non-free flight adventures.

Daryl

Chase Bike

I'm almost reluctant to take up space with this request but my weary
old legs have diminished my inhibitions to allow me to ask:
To anybody attending the upcoming Intercities contest at Muncie:

Do you have a chase bike for sale? My old Honda has given up the ghost
and while I am looking for a suitable replacement locally, I've not had
any luck. Lots of dirt bikes with clutches, but no adult sizes with
centrifugal clutches, either old or brand new. If you have a good bike
that you want to part with at a fair price please email me.
