Saw your web site. Just moved from Kansas to Santa Barbara Ca. I am a
member of the local SAM club from Wichita Ks.....currently contracting as an
engineer with the Jet Center (Santa Barbara) working on Biz jets. Just
wondered were the closest free flight clubs individuals would be. Do you
know anybody from this area. Looks like I am 3 hours drive to TAFT. Since I
am on contract....we brought only enough stuff to survive with in our
Camry. No room for models ....but just enough room for a P30 kit and a few
tools and glue. I fly indoor stuff as well. We used to live in
Seattle....I was a member of the Boeing club and flew with the Stratobats.
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Jeff Renz

[Jeff

Taft is probably the closest, but you are but a proverbial stone's throw
from the ultimate Free Flight Mecca of Lost Hills. I understand
that there a small site closer as there are some readers whole fly
Ff and live in Santa Barbara. Look on the CUFFMAC calendar on the web
site for the main Southern California Events. October is the #1 month
for Free Flight in CA.]

F1J rules

I know I've got them somewhere, but I can't put my finger on them at the
moment. Can someone give me a quick rundown of the model specs for the F1J
class - general model size/area restrictions, weight limits, engine size,
engine run times, that sort of thing. I tried the FAI website, but got lost
in the jungle. Thanks for any help.

[Jack, there is a summary on the SCAT web site www.aeromodel.com/scat
but you should persevere with www.fai.org/aeromodelling/documents

I think that F1J is in section 4e - provisional rules. To prevent
embarassment of a notable US FAI FF figure I will not mention his name
but he is what my desktop support team refer to as Techno-Turnip -
he was able to get the lates sporting code from the ablove site
in MS Word format and print it out. So it should be not problem.

Note that there is a separate supplement document that has all the
latest changes. The hard FAI sportsman needs this too to
get the latest gotcha. ]

Brokenspar's Crotch Bunt

Brokenspar's Crotch Bunt

BrokenSpar's comments on the 20 second rule and the Stamov speculation are
both well taken. These kind of mishaps are always rife with speculation when
the simple truth is probably just that, very simple. Stamov is a world class
flyer and he doesn't need to nor would he stoop to doing anything unethical.
If he had DT'd his model on purpose you can be sure he would have said so!
End of story. Get rid of the 20 second rule!
[Editorial - This topic is now closed - If you want further clarification as
to how his model works or what happend you should ask Victor Stamov
personally at any World Cup event. Victor attends many in Europe
and will be in the USA in the fall. His model box is always open
and I have have seen him explain anything about his models to all people,
including those who have no intention of buying anything.]

As far as Brokenspar goes I have flown downwind from him and his crotch &
bunt maneuver is a thinly disguised strategy he uses to do two things (the
lifting of the leg is the giveaway).
1. He of course passes gas in the maneuver and in doing so is trying to
create lift both with the warm air and the blow down to the ground in an
effort to bust loose the ground layer.
2. His main reason however is to create a zone of noxious death around the
thermal he has picked and in doing so no one dares go around him trying to
piggy back.

Depending on what he had for dinner the night before he can be quite
effective. I once towed towards him and got dizzy and discombobulated and
turned six shades of green before I got the heck out there. By then I was so
flustered I just launched into the huge hole that was left in the wake of
Brokenspar's turbo charged thermal. Don't underestimate this guy, he has
honed his tactical skills to a very tawdry level.

Not wanting to be outdone I gave the BrokenSpar Bunt a try but not having
the necessary control over the right muscles I simply left a little trail of
poofers as I towed (sounded like a weak honda 50 microbike) and I by the
time I did the bunt maneuver all I did was manage to crap in my pants.
Nothing quite like chasing a model while walking bow legged.

And now for true confession time! The real reason I wore the Puff Daddy
Baggy Rapper pants in prior contests was to try and disguise the adult
diaper underneath. I have since given up on both and have gone back to
wearing shorts and using cattail fluffies again but I'm a heck of a lot
smarter for the experience.

Mac the (blowhard) Bigot

[Jon, it appears that there are areas of technology ? where my
knowledge is severely lacking. I now understand the enthousiasm for
Jay Sloan's mobile dineing establishment at Lost Hills and the
menu choices of the more advanced practitioners. I must admit that I am at
a lost to guess if the approach would recive the approbation
of the Luddites or if it will be necessary to launch an immediate
rules change proposal. On the grounds of saftey of course!!]
