Roger,
If I want to post on SEN in the way that is easiest for you, do I put my
text on the form tilted, "Send Entry Form?" Or, I could just e-mail you,
right, but then you have to reformat? Do I need the registration info I
originally provided, such as user name, or other, which I lost?
Thanks, Mark Bennett, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
[Mark, and anyone else the best way to post is just to e-mail your words
of wisdom to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. To make it easierr for me restrict it to

Icarex and Eliminating Porosity

After noting several comments in the scat newsletter about the porosity of
Icarex I would like to share what little I know about it.
The porosity is caused by the polycarbonate coating not completely saturating
the cloth fibers and varies somewhat from batch to batch. I tend to believe
this is probably a manufacturing defect, not a design defect, and
unfortunately will be corrected eventually. I say unfortunately because the
porosity makes it much easier to install than the traditional films because
trapped air under the covering is not a problem. The latest Icarex I have
received has noticeably less porosity than that from 1 1/2 years ago.
Michael Achterberg suggested AeroGloss clear dope to seal Icarex and stop
absorbation of water ,oil, etc, and he is correct. Do not try to use
butyrate dope because the adhesion is not adequate. And of course nitrate
dope is not fuel proof and also has less than desirable adhesion.
Brushing on one coat of AeroGloss dope thinned 50/50 will more than
adequately seal Icarex covering. However, the usual "brushing on" leaves
streaks and adds more weight than necessary. Spraying will cure the streaks,
but is not a good method to seal porosity. Ever tried to spray unsealed silk?
A more "professional" way is to brush on (not Flow on) 50/50 Aerogloss (dope
and thinner) on an area no greater than 1/2 square foot. Then with at least
75% of the dope still wet, WIPE the dope off will a good quality household
paper towel UNTIL DRY. Using this method a large wing can be sealed in 15
minutes with negligible weight added.
You may notice some coloration being transferred to the paper towel while
wiping. This indicates that the dope has been absorbed into the weave of the
cloth. The cloth is dyed to give the color and the AeroGloss loosens the dye
some.
The best source for Icarex is "Hang-em-High Fabrics" of Richmond, Virginia.
Bonnie Marvin is the proprietor and is very helpful. It is easy to order
from her website which is: . The New 1/2
oz. Polycarbonate Ripstop Icarex with the Part# 12PCxxx (the xxx being color
designation) is the one used for model aircraft.

Looking at your 9/28 contents I saw.... FOR SALE.....Brun.
What ? A stationary Bike ? But no, just some kind of a F1A.
Then, I see notice of Ed Turner's mags. Looks like a good opportunity.
I have a stack of model mags, about 10 feet high, ( two, 5 ft. ) Used
to use them
to weigh down wing skins during the aluminum wing period. Any sportsman
want them,
he can have them ( sight unseen ) for the cost of packaging and shipping
by Mailboxes Etc.
I'll weed l out one or two phone books. Take 'em to Mailboxes. No
airfreight.
This would take a real sportsman ! Or, a devoted collector !

So there is no misunderstanding, I do not, repeat ---do not, believe the
America's Cup should replace the Team Selection Program. The Program is fine
as presently designed. If it needs fine tuning, then the active participants
should do it, ----and no one else.....

Roger,
With all this discussion on team selection programs & such maybe we should
move on to religion and politics when it is finished.

I just contacted Mike Myers about these "missing" events. He is aware of the
discrepancy in the entry form, and has informed me that they will be hosting
HH Cat. Glider, Replica .020, and P-30 Jr which was also omitted.
HH Cat is on Friday, Replica .020 is on Saturday. I do not know when the P-30
Jr. event is scheduled.
Hope this helps.

Hello;
Rex, was wondering if you were referring to me as someone who does not fly,
but was offering suggestions. If so, I probably would be in program if not
building for 20 F1C flyers and a number of F1B flyers. My choice of course,
but circumstances and supply problems dictated the course of my program.
Once again, the proposal of change has created an uproar. Funny, as we get
older, the thought of change provokes such animosity, especially in the
high-tech ever changing world we live in. Sometimes change is a good thing.
People immediately think, not me, I am not going to travel. But pick any
given scenario and do you not travel to X number of contests over a 2 year
period anyway. And wouldn't it be better if those contests had a 100 plus
entrants instead of 20 or 30?
Next, the cost, if you have a box full of models ranging from a $1000.00+
to many thousands and you travel to these contests anyway is the cost really
a factor. I mean you are going to fly in these
events anyway, aren't you??
Why do so many people come to the Max-Men? The size of the contest!!
Wouldn't it be great if there were 4 or more Max-Men size events a year to
look forward to participating in, and you can pick and choose the ones that
fit your schedule or fly in all of them. Isn't this what we, as flyers and
competitors, all really get a kick out of and plan our flying program
around. If we would look at this, what we do, as a sport instead of a hobby,
we would all benefit from it in terms of growth and participation. I started
flying F1B cause there was so few flying F1C. F1B has feed itself, more
entrants more interest and still growing!! I think that I have helped build
the entry level in F1C and hopefully it will start taking off also. It has
taken longer that anticipated, but it has started to feed itself as well. It
is a pretty tough sell to tell someone that you can spend X amount of
dollars and travel X amount of miles to fly against 2, 3, 4, flyers. They
say, what's the point?? But if you have 20, 30, or more to compete against
the cost factor becomes a mute point. If it is what you want to do and you
will find a way!! It is in your blood!!! Competition is what drives the F1
flyer and makes this a sport and not just a hobby. Leave the hobby to AMA
events and let us create a higher plain, no pun intended, and goal to make
this a sport worthy of advanced engineering and Aero-dynamics. High -tech
sells in the world we live in and we can make our sport grow by using this
selling tool to promote and interest new people into new flyers.
Example, new F1C models can be set up and practically fly off the board.
That could not happen just a few short years ago. The first flight fears are
all but gone and this alone has created new and sustain interest in this
event. Gadgets and knowledge has made all these events more popular. Ease of
flying creates renewed interest and a lot of fun. Think about it!! More
flyers= more fun= more flyers!!

Stonehenge 2000
================
Roger,
Here are the results form the Stonehenge Cup, which was run last weekend.
F1B and F1C were flown on Saturday, 24th September 2000. Only four rounds
were flown because there was a pheasant shoot that was downwind during the
afternoon. We declared a hold until the wind swung back. This was partly to
avoid disrupting them and partly because the beaters were trashing and
stealing models. Conditions were sunny, but with a strong breeze, once the
early morning mist burnt off. The wind strength was the cause of the reduced
max.
F1A was run on Sunday, 24th September 2000. The contest ran to the planned 5
rounds despite a heavy downpour that occupied much of rounds 4 and 5.
Conditions were misty at first and overcast all day, though the wind never
exceeded 4 m/s. We were treated to a fly-past by the RAF's Lancaster and two
Spitfires during the 3rd round.

The Prima contest
The event took place on Barkston Heath on Sunday 24th
September being run alongside the
Stonehenge cup. Ten flyers turned up ready to give a crack,
a couple retired before the event
leaving eight to fight it out. Due to the weather the
contest was limited to three x two-minute
flights. The scores were as follows: -
Place Name First flight Second flight Third flight Total score
1 Ron Sabey 107 120 120 347
2 Derek Ridley 120 120 100 340
3 Daniel Billam (Junior) 116 103 120 339
4 David Beales 118 120 87 325
5 Manfred Hoffman 78 120 120 318
6 Igor Vivchar 120 120 0 240
7 John Whitby 70 66 70 210
8 Derek May 79 20 0 199
The proceedings were efficiently run by Geoff Kent.
I had promised to help but I was
somewhat preoccupied up a tree recovering my F1B
from its last round max. Such was the
interest and the enthusiasm we are planning to run it again.
So if you have a Prima get it ready!
