Pierre / Ian,
* The wording in the 1997 Sporting Code Class F1H (which surely
applies for 4 years, from 1997 through 2000 ?) reads as follows:
3.H.8 Classification (page 243)
paragraph 2 : The organiser will establish a 15 minute period during
which all flyoff competitors must tow and release their model. Within
these 15 minutes, the competitor will have the right to a second attempt
in the case of an unsuccessful attempt for an additional flight according
to para 3.H.5
* Ian, can you please clarify the rule in question and confirm whether
or not the "10 minute flyoff rule" to which Pierre refers begins in the
next rule book cycle starting 2001 ? We have the important Sierra Cup
event this Friday October 20th, so would appreciate a swift reply.
* Assuming Ian's email to be <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.> if not please
forward
Regards,
Martyn

Dear Martin,
You did very well with the FAI rules for F1H, but I must correct
something that was modified as a clarification to be applied 1st january
1999:
3.H.8 Classification, last paragraph, it is a 10 minute period for the
Fly-off, not 15 minutes as you said.
When the 10 minutes period was adopted for F1 ABC, there was no reason to
keep 15 minutes for the two minutes classes.
Also, it must be said that the maximum length of launch cable loaded by 2
kg is 50 meters.
Regards,
Pierre.

Dear Mr. Roger Morrell;
I would like to see contest results for 2000. If they are available, would
you know me how to access to it. I am looking forward to seeing you at
Sierra Cup which I am participating.
Best regards Koei Tsuda
[We publish whatever results people send us. Most times when I remember
I put them on the SCAT Web site under the results section to.
Ian Kaynes does a good job in providing the Free Flight World Cup results
They can be found on the FAI web site under the aeromodelling of
Airsports.
I'm planning on going to the Sierra Cup so will look for you there.]

Richard,
Happy to read from you. Can I take your expression " I often felt
that... " literally ? I think, very personally, that our sense of the
air, after thousands of flights, enables us to trim a climb almost to
perfection. To harmonize speed, angle of climb and turn to obtain the
BEST climb. This instinct should help to refine a simulation.
Yesterday I took again the polar curves of " Stuttgart 2 ", and I made
some calculations. Let's suppose 2 waks which glide at 4.8 m/s. The
first one has an aspect ratio of 12, a mean chord of 115.5 mm, a RN of
38800. The second one has an aspect ratio of 20, chord 89.4 mm, RN =
30000. - On the polar curve of Bob WHITE's airfoil with 2 turbulators,
let's add the induced drag. Then for the polar of 30000, the CL/CD
ratio is max with CL = 0.81. On the polar 40000, the CL/CD max is
located at CL = 0.95. This would explain why a ship of small aspect
ratio MUST climb more quickly (speed along its flight path, not its
rate of climb). - Same calculations on B7406f, for RN of 40000 and
50000, give two CL of 0.77 and 1.0 ! The curve of 30000 cannot be
used, it shows stalls. - Of course only the cruise part of the climb
is concerned here
Peter,
I do not know how the simulation program can take account of that. My
remark in the preceding SEN related to models having the same ANGLE OF
CLIMB - but not the same effectiveness of climb (altitude and duration
combined). I interpreted your results, published in SEN, in the
following way : aspect ratio changes, as well as CD, but run and
speed remain constant. Then there is apparently a given aspect ratio
which is favored, and all other aspect ratios not. Could you please
to specify ?
Richard's experience is the same one as that of Albert KOPPITZ, our
champion from here, disciple of Alex A. Beyond a span of 1.70 m the
total performance decreases. In our area lives Igor ZILBERG, just
other side of the border. For one year, Igor has obtained better
results with an aspect ratio of 22 or more. But this nice fellow is a
true magician...
Who would have other ideas?

I am looking for an audio tachometer for measuring F1C engine speed.
If anybody has surplus or is selling such product, please let me know the
price, payment and delivery condition.

I picked up an AD .06 ci engine recently and ran it once. It ran OK but
the Nelson button head plug blew. Does anyone know where a head for the
AD can be obtained which uses the regular, one piece, screw in, Nelson
plug? I vagely remember seeing a recent advertisement for the AD but
can not find it.
Thanks,

Roger,
I went through all the articles in SCAT News on Icarex and could not find
any mention of how you cover with it. Is it heat or can you use dope?
Can somebody out there give me the answer?

Nats Dates
==========
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
The dates for the Nats are set in conjunction with the AMA. Since the Nats
site must accomodate all forms of model flying, we prefer to fly when as
little competition for site space is present. The questions are: do we wish
to compete for space with the RC guys, the Ukie guys, the Soaring guys, etc.
We have moved to later times in order to not conflict with these folks.
Currently ,the only competition for site space is the Electric RC guys for
the first 3 days of the FF Nats. There is a push from some free flighters to
move to a Monday through Friday format, which if it is granted by AMA, could
move us to start and end a day later than at present, which would limit our
conflicts with other fliers even more, if it were granted by AMA.
The corn is another issue. At present, we either put up with corn or with
other field users.
Dates for the 2001 Nats are: July 29 through August 2.
BTW: NFFS in conjunction with the AMA will be surveying all Nats contestants
on several issues related to dates, events, and the like in the next couple
of weeks. We would like a solid response from all who attend.

I would like to list them all but for sure would miss some
