True Far Field View
===================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Roger,
Didn't realize Jim O'Reilly had an F1B that was loud enough to trigger an
audio tach. Hope the FAI doesn't get word or we'll need mufflers on rubber
models. Then there are those long Guitar Strings used in F1A.
For F1C, the models accelerate to over 100fps in a couple seconds. This is
essentially Mach 0.1, so an audio tach at the launch point would read 10%
low.
In a true far field with the model essentially at right angle to the tach,
there would be no correction.
By comparing a launch site tach with one beyond the flight path (like with a
tethered balloon) you can get the velocity for every stroke of the engine
For more thorough research, a far field, tripod mounted camcorder is a great
tool. It can be played back frame by frame to get velocity (using fuselage
length to find distance traveled per frame) throughout climb. Audio can be
used for RPM.
A really slick tool is the audio card in your computer. Software exists for
determining frequency and a bunch of other things. Some let you see every
cycle, like an oscilloscope
That camcorder isn't limited to F1C climb. It can also record F1A bunts,
F1B climb and glide of all models. Highly underutilized.
Do you have to go Over the Rainbow to see that Fantastic F1B, Toto?

Re: Audio Doppler ?
===================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Jim,
Depends on what information's you are looking for. If you simply want
the RPM profile, you'll have to measure the final height and guess the
speed profile. Having the Tachometer placed far (300m/900ft) from the
place you launch the model will reduce Doppler effect, especially in the
beginning of the climb. Using 2 tachometers, one next the model, on far
away will help you estimate the unknown parameters. If you log both and
set up a spreadsheet with the data, you'll be able to make a pretty good
estimate.
I anyone is interested, I will include a RPM logging feature in my
timer. This will give you the accurate figures. Entering these into a
spreadsheet along with data from just one tachometer will enable
measurement of height and speed profile, so this actually takes
advantage of the Doppler Effect rather than attempt to compensate it
away.
The upgrade will be free for MultiClass Version 2 timer users and will
only require an extra Hall element and 2 small magnets in the model.
Torleif.
FlexTime
========
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
FlexTime benefits the CD. The CD can chose not to extend any rounds in
which case the contest is flown and scored as presently. However, if he
anticipates having timer problems at the end because of too many in the
flyoff, he can chose to extend one or more rounds. The call is his.

Extended Maxes, Another Option
==============================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Since the extended maxes are set by the organizers there is no Limit to what
is possible. They could choose the have the first round max set for 10
minutes, hence very likely no flyoff what so ever. Assuming a large number
"max out" based on the 180 second standard the contest is simply decided by
the excess time over 180 seconds for the first round. I now understand how
simple it is to solve the flyoff problem, make sure you don't have one.
