While we were off line we lost 3 F1B competitors...

Ed Turner
---------

Ed was a long time SCAT member inspite of living in Texas. For many years
now he made of point of going to Eastern Europe to take part
in some World Cup events. He went to great lengths
to strengthen the personal bond between US sportsmen and those from
Eastern Europe. Over the last couple of years Ed scheduled his 'chemo'
treatments so that he could take part in major free flight contests.
Ed's long time friend Bill Hartill organized an appropriate moment
during the recent Patterson contest for of Ed's friends to say good bye.

Bill Cushenbery
---------------

I know Bill well because he started flying modern f1B at about the same
time as me. Bill was the man to beat in all the SAM rubber classes and
quickly became a top Competitor in F1B. He was a craftsman who made beautiful
airplanes. By profession he made Hot Rods and Custom cars, many or
which attended his funeral service. at the request of Bill's family
Bob White and Bill Crevena flew rubber models from a hill top over
looking his grave site.

Vern Walters

Subject: Vern Walters

Roger,

Sadly Vern Walters left us for the big hanger in the sky.

Vern was a Chicago Aeronut prior to obtaining hia business degree at the
Univ of Arizona. Then like so many sucessful free flighters, he turned
entruprenuer with Vern's Drivein in Tucson and other businesses.

He spotted trends early and built Sokolov and other CCCP gliders in the
60's. He did the artwork for the Andruikov humor T-shirts at 93WC,
Having been a fan for some time.

With heart problems, Vern traded in his towreel for a Ukrainian winder.
He was a formidable competitor but knew his limitations, especially in
chasing and didn't want to burden friends.

Not lacking enthusiasm, Vern made more PMAC meetings (125 mi away) than
most locals. The NCAA Champ U of A Kardiac Kids didn't help his heart
till the final second of the last game. Then it was ideal therapy.

He was participating in another interest, painting when called upstairs.

Son Dennis learned well from his dad and flies a mean P-30.

Is my understanding that services will be private.
Sure will miss his help, insight and quick wit.

For those users of the Basic Stamp , Parallax have anouced a super stamp.
This has much more power than the standard stamp as it runs at 50 mhz
instead of 20. As a side comment it uses a Scenix
processor instead of a PIC. Parallax have a strange relationship with
MicroChip , the makers of the PIC.
MicroChip had a law suit against Parallax and Scenix because Scenix made a
knock off of the processor
used in the BASIC Stamp. The Scenix version runs at 50 mhz while the
Microchip version runs at 20 mhz.
MicroChip claimed that Parallax gave Senic trade secrets. I do not know if
this has been resolved.

On the small servo front.. Cirrius i.e. Hobby Shack have annouced the CS10
[ assumed to be the same as the
FMA s70] a few decimals of a gram lighter than the Hitech HS50.

smart move.

In past years this event has had a free barbeque with burgers
cooked by Randy Weiler. Hope Randy still has time
to do this now that he has devote his energies to collecting
and flying C/L combat.

South West Regionals News - from our Arizona Correspondent.
---------------------------------------------------------

.. this is the first Am Cup of 99
of 98..

Roger,

Sal Fruciano declared the new field a winner. Better chasing, further
from power lines.

Shortest route to field for those taking I-10 East is through Phoenix
on 10 all the way. On weekdays from approx 3-7PM it is a disaster
around the 60 in Tempe. Somewhat further but less congested is the
85 from Buckeye to I-8 @ Gila Bend. I-8 merges with I-10 @ Casa Grande
just North of Eloy.

Have a safe trip,
H

Dear Roger,

I'm delighted you are back on air! I've just put a link to your site on
the UK's Free Flight Technical Committee's web site and thought you
might like to know its URL which is www.vengi.demon.co.uk

This site is mainly concerned with the administration of free flight in
the UK, so it may be of limited interest to anyone outside the UK. It
does, however, give information ahout the Free Flight Forum reports
which are of universal interest.

My best wishes,
