About 1936 people here were complaining in the local paper about the
noise of model aircraft engines.
The flying field was about 5 miles from town. The club had 2 Baby cyclones
and a Brown[such wealth].
Just imagine the noise they would make, even if you got the three going
together.
Noise is not the problem. The public just can't stand seeing the few having fun.

This is in reply to few modelers who have asked me if Bike rentals for model
chasing is possible in Israel.
Especially inquiries from team manager Batiuk in USA and Allnut in Canada.
Not the Bikes we are used to see here, 90-150 cc.
A friend did the checking for me. They do have off road Bikes like here but
not for rent.
He was able to talk a shop owner into setting 5-10 scooters (mostly Italian)
with small wheel diameter that the guy is willing to rent out, but no
guarantee how well are they suited for off road. The terrain is similar to
Lost Hill so you can make your own decision (is Lost Hills off road ? look it
up in your xxx atlas). I think that it may work out just fine so long that
the soil has not been plowed recently.

If there is interest I will set you up with the address so you can make your
own arrangements.
I formally wrote the Israeli Aero Club General Manager, a couple of month
ago, suggesting that they will arrange this on a larger scale for all
participants, but as of today received no reply. Perhaps if the team manager
will request directly (email) he'll have better luck.
That's all folks, if anyone needs more info or help just call.

We have heard about noise and mufflers till the cows are coming home. I
know there is good f/f info out there, lets get to it. Thanks, jim

the politics]

All that noise...
I think that noise is not the major problem in F1C.
I don't know of any flying field which starting line's is close enough to
a town that could be disturbed.
If it exists, such a small field undoubtely is not useful for F1C and nobody
would take the risk of flying there.
Regarding injuries to your own ears, don't complain if you don't use
auditive protection. This a basic safety rule.
Engine run time and it's associated timekeeping problems, are, I think real
problems.
Having 2/10 to 3/10 disparity between the real time and between different
timekeepers
could be accepted with the old 7 sec run time, but every F1C flyer would
agree that it's
absolutely inacceptable with the 5 seconds rule.
I really begun to notice the difference since I fly with electronic timer!
It's also true that the level of perfomance of current models makes
impossible to return to the old 7 sec rule without making some kind of
perfomance restriction.
That restriction has to be simple to control and don't get current models
or engines obsolete.
Air intake (Venturi) restriction is the first one that cames to my mind.
This is a the kind of move in racing cars when they want to limitate the
perfomance
Why not trying with 4 mm (5/32") diameter max air intake hole?. I'm not the
engine expert,
may be Doug G. could tell us about that with more authority, but I think
that RPM will
drop a lot (also the noise). If you don't like the idea, you can also
experiment with exhaust hole restrictions, with the added benefit of
really reducing the noise.
And that doesn't mean tuned pipe if the rule asks for a short max. lenght
of the pipe. (say that
the end of the restriction tube has to be at less than 50 mm (2 inches)
from the center of the piston.
Some experiments would be needed in order to find the right hole's
diameter.
Each one of these two possibilities (or both) could let us going back to the
extended engine run.

Roger

If the noise situation or the loss of fields does appear
evident and the CIAM does pass any restrictions on the noise
levels of our beloved F1C models then the CIAM should seek a
common design for a muffler that must be adhered to, This
will then mean that no-one will have an advantage as the
design is standard.

The other issue is of course the timing factor, As mentioned
in an earlier dispatch I believe that CIAM could also have
developed an electronic unit capable of sending back to the
timekeeper the moment of engine cut, I know this proposal
sounds simple the way I have put it and in reality is
probably difficult to design but with engine runs getting
shorter one must look at the possibilities.

Closed loop systems

Hi Roger,

Might as well get my little bit heard.

A cruise missle is a closed loop freeflight. Wing area about the same as
an F1C.
About the same noise level (without muffler). It is programmed to fly a
prescribed flight pattern. The only outside input is to determine where
to DT. They cost $1,000,000.00 each. Is that where we are headed? If so
you can count me out, I might forget and set instant DT.

[Rex while some sportsmen seem to have more money than sense,
I think that we're a little ways off the $1,000,000 F1C missle.
So we don't need to count you out yet !

Although come to think of it maybe I'm selling my BlackMagic timers
to the wrong people ! If my on board electronics costs less that $100
and give a grand or even two for the airplane - call your congressman
we have a deal for you ]
