Nats F1A flyoff

Thanks for showing the Nats F1A results for Junior and for
Senior/Open. John Barron (age 14) maxed out and joined
Mike Fedor, Jim Thornbery, Bob Sifleet, and Aram Schlosberg
in the flyoff. John Barron and Mike Fedor both achieved
the five minute max, after which the wind picked up,
so they went for the ten minute max early the next
morning to determine who would be first overall (under the
watchful eye of event director Jim O'Riley). Mike zoom
launched first, nicely centered in a small patch of lift.
John bunt launched his model well above Mike's, but John's
was not as well centered in the lift and came down first.
Mike's model rode the lift for about three minutes and
finally he could celebrate his hard-earned win.
So the overall F1A standings became:
Mike Fedor 1st
John Barron 2nd
Jim Thornbery 3rd
Bob Sifleet 4th
Aram Schlosberg 5th
Don Zink and I were next, but didn't make it to the flyoffs.
There were 31 contestants overall.
If I remember right, Steve Spence has a strong lead in the F1A
America's cup standing. But he and other open flyers may want
to watch out for John. He now has three 2nds in America's cup
F1A events.
By the way, much thanks to George Batiuk who ran a superb
Wakefield camp. Several juniors competed in Wakefield at
the nats with George's encouragement. I think we will have
a strong junior team for next year.
Words from a proud father.

Soaring Birds

I'm searching for documentation of aerodynamic features of soaring birds
such as wing loading, AR, tail moment, airfoils root to tip. DaVinci made
many sketches but not too scientific. Smithsonian Institute lists weight
and span but not too useful to us. I walked the beaches of Florida
thinking it would be a cinch to find a seagull on its back with feet
straight up - not so. Libraries are full of bird books but none of this
sort. Surely with early aircraft designs patterned after that of birds,
this sort of information must be available. Any help along these lines
would be appreciated. Gil Morris This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
F1C Power Model for Sale

Hi Roger,
I have an F1C power model for sale. It is Bob Waterman's # 22 with which
he won the Nor Cal meet, I believe. It is an Achterberg 104" Odyssey
with an Achterberg carbon "D" box, 6 panel wing. The engine is a
Verbitsky, as is the fuselage. The model is equiped with a Mogle
electronic timer. The price is $1500 with timer and $1200 without timer.
Call Bob Johannes at 636-441-3945
Regards, Bob
Model Retrival at the NATs

Dear Roger:
I think I have the good story in model retrival at the nats. My flying
buddy, Mike Basta, put up a max with his F1B in the 7th round. The DT
apparently did not work. He thought he had found the model in a tree some
distance off site, but when he went back with the tree climber the nest
day, no model! Two days after the flyaway, he finally tracked down the
model. It was hanging in a kid's room in a subdivision some distance from
the original location. The kid wasn't home, which is just as well as he had
stripped Mike's name off the model. Fortunately, the parent was more
responsible. And, fortunately, only the good guys seem to know what that
funny little tailed thing attached to the model is used for.
Thermals,
Ed Wiley
