Although I have promoted capping flyoffs at the finals about a minute above
the a model's best still air performance, it is Lee Hines who proposed that
flyoffs be capped at 7 minutes. I included his idea in "Flyoffs and
Demolition Derbies," which was written in reaction to the latest Levotto
13-minute flyoffs. Lee published his original e-mail to me in this foruma
few weeks later.

Today I spoke with John Clapp, who is planning to manufacture more robust
rubber with a slightly lower energy potential. To differentiate it from
older vintages, it will have a different color (pink?). Within a year,
after enough of it is available, it is conceivable that contest directors
will require flyoff contestants to use it. Although performance will
diminish slightly, it will apply across the board. It seems that the race
to produce better rubber was counter productive, as smaller motors have
undercut the overall demand for FAI rubber.

[Unfortunately the FAI rules cannot be changed in such a way
to exclude a particular color or batch of rubber, while FAI is currently
the only supplier this has not always been the case.

There would be nothing to stop a CD doing it for some local contest
of course but it would not be practical for a major event.

One of the 'appeals' of rubber flying the the variations
between the batches and what rubber performs best under
what circumstances. There are certainly some inequities because
modeller A was lucky enough to get rubber froma partiular batch.
That's F1B flying.

The rubber that FAI Model Supplies sells is the best ever. They
have spent considerable energy working on it with the "Rubber
Company". One of the risks we, the Free Flight rubber model
community run is that if for some reason they
stopped supplying us then it would take someone else a long
time to get to their level of performance, particularily given
the economics of the hobby business.]
