John Sheppard

Last week marked the passing of John Sheppard from New Zealand . John was one of the Cranfield 5 along with Sandy Pimenoff, Giovanni Guerra, Rolf Hagel and Larry Conover that were the joint F1C World Champs at Cranfield, UK in 1960. Like his fellow champions John continued to contribute and play an active role in International Free Free Flight. They were all excellent flyers and on that perfect day demonstrated clearly that the fly off system needed to be revised to produce a “sporting result”. Hence the system with increasing Max targets.

John’s model flying Bio, not yet updated with his passing can be found on the Model Flying New Zealand Web Site

Free Flight Quarterly #80 for July 2021 has appeared with a good selection of articles. They include the first part of the new series by Dave Hipperson on the story of the British Power Models  from the just post war era to 1970. It also remembers the Czech free Flight magazine Volny Let,  which ceased publication last year after a fairly successful decade and a half of publication. Gerhard Woebbeking continues his analysis of optimum F1E and F1A structures, the numerous Mills engines replicas are detailed  in an article by Adrian Duncan and Dave Owen and much more.

Table of contents, cover illustration and extensive summaries of the articles can be seen in our website:

Plugs and Booms at the Nats

From: Walt Ghio

I will be attending the Nat’s arriving on the evening of the 26th and will have Nelson glow plugs for sale. Cost for the Nelson glow plugs is eight dollars each.

Also, I will have a few carbon 1/2A / F1J / F1P tailbooms for sale. These have been manufactured by Stepan Stefanchuk in the Ukraine. They are a replacement for the aluminum / carbon / aluminum Ken Oliver tailbooms from the past. The weight is approximately 20 grams. The big end diameter is 1.080 inches the small end is .300 diameter and the length is 38 inches. The cost is forty dollars per tailboom. I can also mail these to anybody who wishes to purchase them.
