Timer for no BEC ESC

From:Tapio Linkosalo

*Keep in mind that the drone ESC does not have a brake enabled for a
folder prop. And a special wiring harness is needed.
Actually, many (most) drone ESCs are based on Arm32 chip, and use BlHeli
firmware. the BlHeli version for Arm has an option to enable the
brake-on-stop. You need an interface (an Arduino chip with suitable
program), then connect the Arduino to a PC, and the ESC to the arduino.
After the connection it is a simple task to turn on the brake.

In my timer I connected the ESC signal connector to the input side of the
regulator on board the timer. Thus no special wiring is needed, but the ESC
is connected to the timer with a 3-wire lead, as with BEC ESC.s. Where in
the older version the plus wire provided regulated power to the timer and
servo, now the plus is connected to the battery plus in ESC and provides
unregulated voltage to the regulator on timer.

Towed Power

From:Peter Martin
Hi,
In response to Gil Morris' comment on towed aircraft for wind power generation, the British FF team had a discussion on this last year.   There's a good paper by Prof Moritz Diehl on the fundamentals, at https://homes.esat.kuleuven.be/~highwind/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Diehl2013a.pdf.
In terms of basic Physics, whether you transmit force to spin an electrical generator and lengthen the line, or that force is instead used to increase the altitude and speed of an aircraft on a fixed 50m line, they are both looking to extract the most power from the wind.   In the first case, the aim is to generate electrical energy.  In the second case, the aim is to increase aircraft kinetic and potential energy before towline release (after release, kinetic energy converts to more potential - Altitude - and also is lost to drag).
Main points are that equation 3 says most power can be generated when the towline is horizontal - It becomes harder to harvest power from the wind as the aircraft comes up on the line, note to F1A flyers!

Equation 8 says low drag gives high power.  Also, equations 8 & 9 say that there's a limit on power that can be generated, based on lift, drag and relative windspeed.  Go too slow and you don't get enough power, but go *too fast* and lose power to drag.   Glider flyers might need to experiment with the rhythm of launching to get the optimum speed in each phase of the launch pull, it might not just be about as hard and fast as possible the whole way - A bit like a golfer hitting the sweet spot.
Though might be of interest,

Peter Martin
