2013 AmCup Results and USA Junior Team entry
No detail write up for this first AmCup results for 2013 other than noting that a new trend looks to be developing in F1G. The western winter-early spring contests are complete and the rest of the country now starts to uncover to be able to go outside to fly models.
The 2013-2014 Jr Team selection program has started as of April 1, 2013. I have recieved entry for from two Texas juniors. As has been previously advertised in SEN, the complete program is on AMA website <http://www.modelaircraft.org/events/teaminfo.aspx> and the NFFS website: <http://www.freeflight.org/competition/Juniors/index.htm>.
Last week's SanValeer was the first AmCup for this Jr Program-- several Juniors flew but none have yet entered. Not to worry! Scores will be retro-scored after receiving application. Juniors should go to the websites mentioned and print out the Jr Program. They can then fill out the form and send it in OR simply send me an email with the information below.

Lost Hills Field Update

This past Tuesday Ted Fister, George Walter, Ken Kaiser and myself spent several hours looking at some land to replace our present flying field. We had a meeting to start the day with two of the ranchers who are involved with the new orchard by the Lost Hills flying site. They are interested in acquiring our site and are willing to work with us to find another site. This is the second meeting we have had and plan on meeting at least once per month to see if we can find some land.
They showed us several locations to the south of Hw 46 that showed promise for a new flying site. We drove in from Hw 33 approximately three miles to one location. We then drove in from Hw 46 approximately seven miles to another. Due to the angle the dirt road takes off Hw 46 we ended up approximately five miles due south of Blackwell Corner. The road off 33 is not very good. The road off 46 is very good with several cattle crossings. Very big area with some oil wells and associated equipment for the oil production. A few fences also. Cattle are on some of this land in the winter. Land to the west is flat with the land off 33 a little hilly.
On Wednesday I received a phone call and was told that this land is leased to a solar company and that we cannot use it. We then talked about several different options to look at for the next time we meet. This will include more land to the south of Hw 46 and also land east of Hw 5 and south of the Wildlife Refuge. Also, we will be looking at the southeast corner of the area, which we are now flying on. It is close to Hw 46, which is not good and from my memory has some low hills on the north east side off Holloway Rd. This area looking at Google is approximately two miles square.
The good news is that we can ride our motorcycles on the new orchard land. This means we can chase our models, just that we need to stay in the row that you start riding along and not cross over the drip irrigation pipes. If we find that a flyer has driven over a section of irrigation pipe we will ask this person to quit flying.

Timers This is a fly one flight, time one flight contest. Please buddy up with another flyer for each event. If you are new to Lost Hills and do not know any other flyers please see me and I will set you up with another flyer. For all fly-offs you need to bring a timer to the line and a random pull of the time cards will select your timer for the flight. Thank you in advance for your corporation on this subject.
Round 1 8:00 - 9:00 F1A - 210 sec, F1B / F1C / F1P - 240 sec
Round 2 9:10 -10:10 180 sec for all following rounds
Round 3 10:20 -11:20
Round 4 11:30 - 12:30

Round 2 10:00 – 11:00
Round 3 11:00 – 12:00
Fly-offs start at 5:00 pm. Ten minute rounds with ten minutes between events. Each contestant that is in a fly-off must provide a timer for the timer pool for that round. No timer, no can fly! Please bring a timer and help out with all the events.
F1GHJQ and Vintage FAI Power will have Round 1 timed to the ground. Round one will be used to determine the winner if two or more are tied after the second fly-off round.
Round 1 7:30 – 8:00 One flight timed to the ground
Round 2 9:00 -10:00 120 sec for F1GHJ all rounds, 180 seconds for F1Q

Free Flight Quarterly for April 2013
Free Flight Quarterly for April 2013 has appeared This latest issue contains two obits, a very detailed one by Mike Myers on his friend Sal Taibi, an obit of great insight and affection that covers the whole life of that remarkable modeller. Bob Hatschek's life and models are remembered in a shorter essay.
There is also an electric flavour in this issue with three articles on electric free flight, Aram Schlosberg discusses the problems of energy limiters for the contest categories with electric motors, such as F1Q. The smaller category E-36, growing in popularity in USA and the UK is addressed by articles by Ian Middlemiss and Chris Stoddart that relate to the choice of suitable motors and the prediction of their performance.
The F1G category is covered by two articles, the first of new model by Louis Joyner, an advanced Coupe design suitable for home construction ...a rarity today! Louis covers all aspects of the construction and trimming in careful detail. In the second, Peter King, well-known specialist in this category in the UK, analyzes the design of the F1G propellers and the effect of the smaller Reynolds number at which they fly. Several of the most popular propeller designs, such as the Burdov, Andriukov and others are compared, as well as the effect of different pitch distributions. These articles are a must for the F1G enthusiast.
Brian Eggleston, one of the pioneers of the Low Drag airfoils has developed a low-drag version of perhaps the most popular F1A airfoil, the Benedek B6356b in an attempt to reduce the profile drag. He also presents three new LDA airfoils, mainly directed toward ultimate performance in the F1A category.
Slobodan Midic describes a simplified method to compute the performance of F1B models, and gives examples of the calculation procedure, applicable to a flapped F1B model (using his new low-drag airfoils). The method does not require the step by step calculation and rather long computer codes of other, similar, approaches and provides what appear to be realistic values of the sink velocity and maximum height gained.
The interesting kits and accessories made by Spencer Willis in the UK for Vintage Rubber models are described in some detail, a highly specialized and unusual line of models. The last page of this issue is given to a clever cartoon by Michel Coviaux, who draws them frequently for Vol Libre Trimestriel, and that we hope will be permanent fixtures of Free Flight Quarterly too.
As always, the table of contents and cover of the new issue can be examined in our website: www.freeflightquarterly.com/wordpress
