2013 Huron Cup report:

A bureaucratic issue with CFB Base Borden (our traditional flying field)
made the location for the 2013 Huron cup a cause for concern. Negotiations
were still underway with the military officials and Leslie Farkas up to the
last minute. Alas, we were not able to solve the problem and Borden was out
as the field location. A last minute decision was made to utilize our
wonderful test flying field just outside of Tottenham Ontario (aprox 50
minutes north of Toronto). The field is a large sod farm owned and operated
by the Zander Sod company. We have had permission to fly on this field for
some time now but have hesitated to utilize it for contest flying because
access to all corners of the field is not available by car depending on the
wind direction. As a result, it is often necessary to cart all of the
ancillary model equipment a considerable distance across the field by hand.
Also, no motorcycles or cars can be driven on the sod thus retrieval is
principally by foot. With these limitations in mind permission was obtained
to operate the Huron cup from the sod farm.

Saturday July 20th was forecast to be a sunny day with some light winds in
the morning increasing to strong winds in the afternoon. Fortunately the
wind direction was very favorable allowing us to set-up close to a parking
area and utilizing the longest length of the field.

This year we once again were pleased to host some international sportsmen
to our contest. Bela Suranyi (F1B) had made the trip from Romania to visit
his son in Toronto. Vladislav Lazarevieh (F1A) had arrived from Ukraine and
demonstrated some very fine glider flying. Shlomi Rosenzweig had flown in
from LA to stay at Ladi Horak’s nearby cottage and was apparently out
flying almost every morning and evening all week! Aram Shlosberg (F1B/Q)
and Yuda Avla (F1G) and Tzvetan Tzvetkov were our only guests from the USA
this year. Hopefully next year we can attract more American flyers to this
wonderful site!

Bernard Guest (F1B) had also flown in from Calgary to train with the
Canadian team and was also busy test flying every chance he could.

The turnout was small this year. The uncertainty surrounding the field
location certainly contributed to this. Hopefully, we can have this sorted
out for next season. We had entries in F1A, F1B, F1G and F1Q. But no F1C
flyers decided to enter the contest (some of the Canadian team were
training on the field though) and no other mini event flyers had shown up
either.

The first three rounds showed a slow but steady increase in wind speed. 3
minutes was not really an issue for the field except that in some cases the
models crossed a narrow irrigation ditch (that is deep and difficult to
cross except at several grass bridges at a few locations). The field across
the ditch is also a large sod farm owned by the Brayford sod company. We
also have permission to fly on this field. There was some issues with a
tractor operator on this field that was concerned about running over models
that might land in front of him.

To accommodate this we decided to move the start location further north and
reduce the max to 150 seconds. The next two rounds showed steadily
increasing wind speeds until after the 5th rounds I determined that the
wind speed was becoming excessive and suspended flying for the day. The
plan was to return to the field on Sunday morning and finish the last two
F1A/F1B rounds early, and then start F1G/F1Q afterwards. While the field
could have easily accommodated 3 minute maxes in the strong winds (the
field is surrounded by other fields with either grass or crops and a few
small lines of trees) retrieval on foot becomes difficult when the
distances become large.

Everyone was invited to Ladi Horak’s cottage located near the field and a
nice Bar-B-Q commenced with some good camaraderie shown with new and old
friends enjoying some good food and conversation. Let’s just say that the
beer and BS was flowing freely…… ;-)

Sunday morning was forecast to be sunny, with light winds in the morning
turning to calm conditions in the afternoon.

The two remaining rounds in F1A/F1B were flown in pleasant, gentle drift
conditions. Brian Eggleston (of LDA airfoil fame) was testing a helium
filled balloon for air picking and several of us flew some nice maxes based
on the signals from Brian and his balloon.

The international contestants had a big impact on the results. In F1A
Vladislav Lazarevieh (UKR) took first (dropping only 1 round) with Shlomi
Rosenzweig (USA) taking 2nd place using some nifty new models using
Favionics electronics. Peter Allnutt (CAN) showed that experience is always
an asset with a well deserved 3rd place. In F1B Tony Mathews (CAN)
took 1stplace (full score) with Aram Shlosberg (USA) in 2
nd place and Bela Suranyi (ROM) flying very steady for a good 3rd place.

F1G and F1Q were flown in amazing conditions! Very little drift and
beautiful sunny skies made for a lovely afternoon. Big but gentle thermals
rarely took the models more than a few hundred meters away from the start
line. Aram Shlosberg demonstrated his large, F1C-like F1Q model. It showed
plenty of potential however the climb was somewhat inconsistent and the
glide was an adventure in random direction turns. That model likes to
wander!

Some fun observations: Bernard Guest had his new F1G (LDA airfoil, E-timer)
flying well. However, his DPR was not operating reliably because the high
torque of the June 2013 rubber motors was jamming his servo! In the
2ndround Bernard launched his model, the DPR failed to start and the
model
dove back down towards Ladi Horak who was seated near his stooge. Ladi
ducked, the model missed him and impacted the ground nose-first. It bounced
up off the ground, the prop then started and the model executed a perfect
climb and maxed in a thermal! Some discussion ensued as to whether this
flight would count (it did not) and whether delayed ROG was a viable new
event!

Ladi Horak was trailing Tony Mathews in F1G by 2 seconds after 4 rounds. As
Tony stood with a wound model waiting to fly, Ladi engaged in
“psychological warfare” using every trick in his repertoire to try and get
Tony to make a mistake. It was quite comical to hear I’m sure! Btw, it
didn’t work!

So how calm was it? Ladi Horak launched his F1G in round 5 into a large,
yet gentle thermal that was located directly over the flight line. The
model climbed to aprox 200 meters in the thermal and stayed overhead. After
DT, it slowly descended and landed right on top of his model box!! Later
after a few beers the story had expanded into a tall tale with the model
taking itself apart and packing itself into his box on its own……. ;-)

Tony Mathews managed to win F1G with a perfect score with Ladi Horak close
by in 2nd and Yuda Avla flying very well to a nice 3rd place.

This field is a very nice location and hopefully next year we can get many
more flyers joining us north of Toronto to fly on our little piece of Free
Flight Paradise.

July 2013 SCAT Black Cup Fun Fly

We did a survey to see if July 13 or 20 was preferred—the feedback was a 50-50 split. So hey- it’s a fun fly so let’s fly both days. On  July 13, Bernie Crow did 7maxes in F1Q. He started at 7:42 am and completed at 10:05.  Bill Booth had 6 maxes but dropped the last.Roger Morrell flew a couple flights.  OnJuly 20, Kevin Sherman came out to challenge Bernie, he did 7 maxes with his  F1Q. Roger did 7 maxes as did Jack Emery (F1B). Ihad a good string going but dropped a flight while trimming a F1A with a newtail boom. I did follow with 4 maxes in F1A and 3 in F1H. Being the pseudo CD,I deemed I maxed out too. No fly offs for the SCAT Black Cup so I established anew rule. The names of those will be listed in order of completing seven maxes.The July 2013 SCAT Cup Winners;
Bernie Crowe 1260, F1Q
Kevi nSherman 1260, F1Q
Roger Morrell 1260, F1B
Jac k Emery 1260, F1B
Jim Parker 1260, F1A,H
Kevin won the Black Cup last year but did not get the cup so we had him take with  the cup.
Roge rand I will be in France for most of August so there is no plans for a  August Black Cup. Any SCAT member wanting to  organize and conduct a fun fly if they wish. Please contact Roger or me via email.
