USA Team selection the third day
We had tried to give a report as each day happened but it finally got away from us by the third day.
The third day had great weather until the last round when the wind increased dramatically for both F1B and F1C. It may have got to 15 mph [the FAI max is 9 m/s or about 20 mph]. The 7 th round was flown with no significant drops. However the wind increased more and it was not possible to do the fly offs that evening. The next day people came out at 6:30 for the 7:15 FO but it was quite windy. It was below the limit but there was an electrical that increased in intensity. There were visible lightning strikes closer than Blackwell’s corner and these were still happening at 10 AM and there was no real sign of improvement. So we decided to recommence at 4 PM. This was the right decision as the wind had dropped to 2-3 mph and the storm cleared. It took some time to get set up but the B and then the C fly Off went with without a hitch. In B George Batiuk who was second on Day 1 stalled all the way down so was not a contendor for first spot on day 2, but did get a team place on aggregate. George was the only person to max both days. Walt Ghio bested Mike Davis by a few seconds. In C Mike Roberts flew after everyone else, had an over run and flew again in what might have been the best air to win by only a few seconds. In spite of the virtually perfect conditions is a term of wind and visibility, the air was not very helpful and the times were lower and closer than one might have expected.
