2012 Southwest FAI Challenge - Update -Go!

It took a while to get us all on the same page and referencing the same landmarks, but thanks to locals Bill Holt, Walt Conrad & Tom Ioerger, we have concluded that the south end of the lake is in good shape today.  In fact, the Las Vegas area gang had a small contest in that area this weekend without problems.  The area where we have flown the last few years is questionable, but that is almost 2 miles farther north of where we will set up this year.  We are moving to higher ground.  The south end of the lake bed is the "high" end.

For those of you who have been coming to this meet for many years, we will set up generally where the contest was flown when the Las Vegas Dust Devil's ran the meet.   You will need to enter the field at the tortoise gate located directly under the power lines, take the nearest dirt road to the lake bed as usual, but once you get to the lake bed, turn LEFT (south).  We should be about 1.5 - 2 miles to the south.  The "Beecroft Beacon" should be blinking for those that arrive after dark.

It is a bit early to expect perfect predictions and AccuWeather & Weather Underground don't quite agree, but as of right now, Saturday & Sunday are predicted to be in the high 60's to mid 70's with winds at 5-7 mph.

As always, if you have any questions or need more guidance, please feel free to give me a call.  (760) 889-3201.  Bob Beecroft and I plan to arrive Thursday late afternoon.

Thanks,

Bill Booth Jr.

Finals Credits

On behalf of the Team Selection Committee I would like to thank Aimee Schroedter for her direction and administration of the Finals.  Her planning (including contingency scenarios) was very thorough and she was well organized throughout the process.  Her wind speed/drift direction calculations (for the various launch areas), among other self-developed management tools, were outstanding.  She managed her staff very well and they worked together as an efficient team.  It was truly a pleasure to work with her.

I would also like to thank Head Jurist, Roger Morrell, for an excellent job overseeing the contest and making timely decisions.  Well done Roger.  Thank you also to jury members Faust Parker, Bill Shailor, Pete McQuade, Blake Jensen (final flyoff), and Jim Parker (final flyoff) for a fine job.

Lastly, I would like to thank other members of Aimee’s staff:  Dave Johannes (Event Director), Glenn Schneider (Logistics), Sharon Emery (Scorekeeper), and last, but certainly not least, Terry Kerger (F1C Fuel Czar and emergency CD).  When Aimee took ill, Terry stepped up and directed the contest until Aimee felt well enough to take over.  Thanks a million Terry.

Give these folks a pat on the back next time you see them and thank them for a job well done.

Chuck Etherington

 Hello;
Whoever wrote the F1P article is spot on!! The powers to be put into place an event that not one flier wanted and went on there way. It served no purpose and made zero sense on any level. The kids didnt like it at all!! Harder to fly? Yes! Available? No! Anyone want it? No!
Change back and you will see participation jump again. Or keep it as is till no one does it!!
