Leeper reports on H at the SW FAI Challenge

Today was very calm, liftless & weird!
Only Jim P & I contested in H with dramas every flight as it turned out.
He had some wild, near crash launches for attempts, while I chased trim EVERY FLIGHT! And we both had clean scores  after 4th round!
Finally, the 5th end bit us both...& our trim was the best we had all day!
My good launch (looked to be in good air for a bit) did a couple stalls and went into bad sink to land at 104.
Jim had glued his fin Assy back on after colliding with streamer pole after rd 4 max, launched it nicely with a few minutes left in rd 5...&...wait for it...landed at 106!!!

No one needed chase bikes today, as it was normally closer just to walk over a few paces and pick them up!
See what I mean about weird?

Ciao,
Leeper

In the Press

Just got my FFQ

Interesting , positive article by Matti Lihtamo of Finland. Interesting that many of the parts come from the USA.  Matti is one of the leaders of the blast it up there school but he feels that the best long term approach will be  a fast spiral climb.  He uses a Finnish Timer and EL unit.

Also on the electric front was a teaser on E-36 motors by Chris Stoddard .  This means that test information is there nbut not the final conclusion that will appear in the next issue.

Challenge Chatter

Seen or heard at the SW FAI Challege this weekend

On mini event morning both Victor Stamov and Rene Limberger were seen working on their carbon F1As.  The perfect conditions made it possible to try more launch adjustments.  The weather was forecast to stay for a week or more, so was Victor!

There were a few people wondering why we did not have the USA team selection at this site.  Lack of dust and sheep plus excellent local facilities and cheap travel to Las Vegas are good points. On the downside is that like Lost Hills the summer is very hot so the event would need to be held in the fall.  The recent finals at Lost Hills proved that a non-resident crew can run a major event.  It is closer to Starbucks than Lost Hills! and for those emergency purchases the True Value Hardware store in Boulder City offers senior discounts !

The SAM guys figured sometime back that this is a good site for major events. The city management at Boulder City is very positive and helpful.

Local resident Tom Ioeger reports that the fall has really nice weather with only a few windy days and even if there is some rain the lake area is so large that is typically has minimum effect.

One item that would need some improvement is better sign posting to the flight line.  Distances are very deceptive and even with a flashing beacon at night navigation can be a hard.  they are beefing up the Beecroft Beacon for next year.

In spite of the perfect weather on Sunday morning most of the F1G big shots managed to shoot them selves in the foot during the Cappacchino unlimited tiebreaker flight.
