- America' Cup, one to go
Dan Sobala
Doris Sobala let us know that Dan Sobala her husband of 66+ years passed away Dec. 1, 2012 from congestive heart disease - He was involved in AMA at an early age of -14 or 15.
Dan was a long time USA power modeller. Amongst his designs is the Geef that was used by NFFS as model of choice for their one design series. Although Dan had not flown FAI for many years he kept track of what was happening through SEN
Question on Mike's view
Hi Roger,
Be curious if Mike's suggestion on team selection takes place.
Seems like if those are the only contests the FAI flyers are really mainly interested in going to then why have FAI at the FF champs, Eloy or other contests other than practice or am I missing something?
Thermals,
Terry T.

Mike's article describes his position which is oriented only at the World Champs. This is not the view of the typical sportsmen who is often interested in America;s and World Cup events or even just local flying!
2012 AmCup Results—Only King Orange to be flown
This year we increased the number of AmCup contests and modified the bonus point. So lets see who might be making plans for King Orange.
F1A, Looks like Mike McKeever has this wrapped up. With 111 points, Second place Steve Spence and 3rd place Andrew Barron can’t catch Mike even with a 30 point win at KO—not likely with the poor F1A attendance at the lat few KO.
F1H, Mike McKeever is in the lead with 100 points. F1H has fallen off, there were only 2 contests this year that had bonus and those were only 1 and 2 points respectfully. This gives myself, Jean Pailet and Lee Hines tied for 2nd with 95 points and a chance for the AmCup win. A KO win with one bonus point would win straight away. Looks like a 25 point win would result in 100 point total and Mike would win by tie breaker having three 25 point wins not used in his current total. I now really regret not setting my timer for 10 minutes for the early morning Tangent fly off!
The F1B fliers truly spread out the wins this year. Charlie Jones is in the lead with 101 points—usual it takes 104-107 points. F1B has the greatest number of bonus point contests so Charlie’s lead is remarkable—in fact Charlie’s total includes a 2nd place 20 point score. Eddie Vanlandingham lead for most of the year with 4, 25 point wins. Walt Ghio and George Batiuk are tied for 3rd with 99 points. So Eddie, Walt and George could move into 1st place with a 25 point win at KO. George, 1st place F1B AmCup would be a suitable topping to your first USA team position!
F1G, Hey Hey Tiffy O’Dell, 8 point lead over 2nd place Peter Brocks. Mathematically, Peter could garner 12 F1G flyers at the KO and then win the contest to take the lead. Possible but not probable.
F1C, I’ve never seen this before—possible first place win counting only 3 contests. 2nd and 3rd Faust Parker and Steve Spence could take the lead with 4th place at KO! Come on F1C flyers, fly at other sites!
F1P, Only 7 scored points this year, 3 of which were Jr. No bonus point contests not even the NATs—interesting data for those re-think the Jr W Champs power event. This year, since there were no bonus points, the race is between Glen Scheidner (8 wins) and Bob Hanford (5 wins). So unless Bob can get 6 F1P flyers at KO and win it, Glen win be the 2012 AmCup .
F1J, If the Jr W Champ “re-thinkers” are thinking a return to F1J, the numbers do not look any better. Not even one bonus point contest. Where F1P had 2 contest this year with zero entrants, F1J had 13 zero entrant contest. Faust is in the lead with 100 points. Jean Pailet and Bob Hanford could take the lead with a 26 point win, not likely. 25 point win is not enough; Faust would win the tie breaker.
F1Q, the growth of F1Q is not as strong as I thought it would be several years ago. Other have written on this, ie rule un-certainty and the “flyers” waiting until the development phase of the sport is complete. Never the less, there is some strong competition. Julie Parker’s 102 points looks strong enough for 1st place. Mike Pykelny would need a 3 bonus point win at KO for the lead—again, possible but not probable.
F1E—same old same old. Peter Brocks has an insurmountable lead.
My appreciation to the AmCup checkers-- I needed more help this year. If you see an error, drop me an email <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>
