Colorado Report and Results

Life in the front range of Colorado has been a very busy time for the free flight community.  First we hosted WestFAC III, a big contest for FAC scale competitors. Two weeks later was the 32nd annual FAI 14 round meet and then a week after that it was off to the AMA Nats.  With all of this going on, the reporting of the MMM FAI Annual is a little late.

Brian Van nest had his hands full in flying the contest while helping his grandchildren compete as well.  As shown by the results Logan Tetrick will be
a force to reckon with in the very near future.

The Ulm family reunion on the flight line was fun.  It had been a long time since Al and Patty were flying in this contest.  Son, Gene rounded out the family for a super weekend.  Again the Vannest grandchildren are building their skills and will give all of us old timers a run for the money in the years to come.  Peyton could not launch her F1B as vertical as the "big boys" ands she is not tall enough to do so while keeping the stab off the ground.  She will grow, then watch out.
Jim Bradley had to retire from competition as he injured his knee.
Bill Booth came within 19 seconds of a perfect 14 round score.  Looks like his first encounter with Colorado's altitude did not slow him down.

F1C Power
No flyers competed in this class this year.

A new addition to this contest

In the 32 year history of this contest we have had only 6 competitors post a perfect 14 round score.  There have been a few shortened contests over the years where rounds were cancelled due to weather conditions that produced perfect scores, but only 6 for the full 14 rounds.  Don DeLoach proposed that we establish a new tradition for this contest where those sportsmen who do achieve a perfect 2520 score will be recognized much like the winner of golf's Masters.  That recognition is the Blue Jacket.  This jacket is embroidered with the MMM club logo, the flyer's name and the statement "MMM 14 Round Master Sportsman"

The six sportsmen who have earned the right to wear the "Blue Jacket' are Jim Bradley (F1A), Pete McQuade (F1A), George Batiuk (F1B), Rene Limberger (F1A), Blake Jensen(F1B) and Eddie Vanlandingham (F1B).  Blake and Eddie won the right to the Blue Jacket in a thrilling flyoff in the 2010 contest.

When you see one of these sportsmen on the field be sure to congratulate them for their accomplishment.  You can join this exclusive club by simply maxing over 14 rounds in next year's contest.  Start your planning now for the 33rd annual running of this contest the weekend of July 7 and 8, 2012 in Denver Colorado.

Poitou Commentary and UK Selection Saga Sequel

Hello Free Flight,

I'm just back from Moncontour/Poitou which was its usual great crac despite the cold weather, rain and mud - the Honda CRV looks like I have been keeping cattle in it, I've put my flight line/day tent through the washing machine at 40C but its still not clean!

Flying was to die for, except for F1C which was a tad disappointing. Made up for by mini at Moncontour which was top class in tricky conditions.

Conversation of choice was the UK free flight debate where it seems I have opened the can of worms with everyone now pitching in with their own thoughts. Thanks to Chris Edge. Kris and Stu, Nick amd Alan Jack in particular for their thoughts.
We soon put the lid on that by ruling out any debate of the John 'Bunge' Carter 1st Trials episode, so we got down to real conversations about the excellence of the F1B and F1A flying where Mike Woolner was beaten by a pre-teen French girl; winding just behind my day tent so I can vouch for all FAI rules being complied with.

F1A second fly off was to die for, just perfect dead conditions  in the the rain soaked mist.

Moncontour/Poitou camaraderie was everywhere to be seen and experienced. Roll on the 2013 World Champs to be flown on the Noize plain, I'm booking now for Pas de Jeau campsite.

Great to meet up with Tahn and Liz Stowe, from NSW Australia, on their extended Euro tour and flying F1J and F1A on their retirement tour of European competitions.

Now to the Nub! UK Team Selection for Free Flight.

Having opened the can of worms, and many thanks for all the emails supporting my view of the 1st Trials situation.

Let me make it clear that I have no beef with John 'Bunge' Carter who I regard as a mate, though when he and the misses get back from their Peru Inca Trail adventure I'll know better on the personal relationship, which most respondents have taken it to be.
My complaint is with the way FFTC selects the UK Team for International Competition.
Based on the 'Clarification' in their notice 41 one might have expected the FAI rules to apply to the team selection process. BUT! in writing the rule book they changed their clarification into saying that BMFA rules superseeded the FAI rules but did not issue another clarification explaining their changed position. This was critical in the JC rcdt attempt that would have been treated very differently under FAI rules as compared to the rewritten BMFA FFTC rules.

John has used the 'official' rules to his advantage, as he is allowed to do.
The question is 'How Should We Select The UK Team'?
Surely a system to select an International Team should bear some resemblance to the competition that the team will face at the championships.
For far too long we have a BMFA FFTC team selection system that at best only borrows a bit from the FAI rules, like model spec, but in all other respects is completely different to the conditions which team members will face in the Champs - see FFTC statement 44 where they clearly say that FAI rules do not apply to the selection process.

UK has two International FF Competitions run to FAI rules; Stonehenge and Equinox Cups.
So why not select the team based on their position in these two contests?
Use a Plugge Cup style scoring of positions and we are there. All it takes is a little work with the calculator, or software, and we have a team selected under two FAI competitions flown to the FAI rules they will face in the Euro/World Champs.

Its so simple how have we missed it for all these years?
FFTC, current team and all mates of mine, have done a great job in encouraging FF competitiuon entries through their new Brit rules but please can we have some FAI in place of the Trials.

Replacing the current discredited Team Selection process by using the Stonehenge and Equinox Cups, flown to FAI rules, would give us benefits all round such as:
- UK Team is selected under the same FAI rules and conditions that will apply at the Euro/World Champs.
- six days of airfield hire and organisers' expenses can be better used elsewhere in free flight.
- so how about we have some more FAI contests.

How about using the current Trials Expenses to support some more FAI contests in the domestic calendar?
Its a well known given that if you have contests people will build/buy models to compete in those classes. If we have more proper FAI contests then we will have more FAI fliers entering those contests. Currently FFTC have changed the rules to encourage more general competition entries, which we all generally agree with, but have done nothing for FAI flying.
If we take the six days airfield and organisers' 'Trials' expenses and transfer that to some new FAI contests we will get:-
- more flying in our UK domestic calendar.
- an encouragement to fly FAI classes; which is sadly lacking in the current FFTC Calendar.
- we might just start attracting the potential fliers who would make the UK Team.

Wishing you all the best.

PS Much enlightened by being at Montoncour/Poitou but I'm just off to start publishing some Australian Bush Poetry for the Amazon Kindle, see 'Banjo' Patterson Compendium in about two weeks time.
