Lost at Lost Hills

I managed to loose two glider hatches at the recent Lost Hills contests and so if anyone finds them I'd be grateful.

The first was on the Sunday of the Issacson. The hatch is for an A2, made from green PCB material 1mm thick and is painted white on one side. Size is about 120mmx40mm and it answers to the name 'Cedrick'.

The 2nd was on the Sunday of the MaxMen. This hatch is for an A1, made from white/clear PCB material 0.5mm thick and is unpainted with a small magnet on one side. Size is about 120mmx30mm and it answers to the name 'Myvanwy'.

I'm really missing them and would like them back please.

Scat Annual Junior Trophies

The SCAT Prez Jim Parker informed me that we expect more Junior
flyers for the SCAT ANNUAL[Mar 20-21].
In light of that news, I have ordered three Junior Hi-Time trophies,
not just the single one listed on flyer.
There will be one each for Power, Rubber & Glider classes.
So come on out and may the best flyers take home the bacon, er, awards.

See you soon,
Leeper, yr hmbl srvnt & CD

The 20th Annual Isaacson Winter Classic, February 6,7 and 8, 2010

Twenty years ago, Bob Isaacson and I were having our daily lunch in his smelly locker room office at Leuzinger High School where we both were teachers. Bob said we got all these guys coming in to fly at the MaxMen International, why don’t WE offer a second, warm-up contest for them to fly the week before? We’ll call it the Winter Classic! Bob, how can we call it a “classic” when haven’t had one yet? Bob said yeah, but it sounds good!

The 20th Isaacson Winter Classic was held on a rainy February 6th weekend. Saturday, at 8am, we had 85 fliers signed up for 160 entries. At 9am we moved the flight line, started round 2 and the rain began. We suspended the round until Sunday. On Sunday, we continued with 1 ½ hour rounds so fliers could participate in multiple events (Thanks, Leigh!). With threat of rain, we flew on Sunday with actually very nice conditions.

In one of the earlier promotions of the contest, I stated that at this time of the year, the field is covered with beautiful short green grass and little blue flowers, Gil Morris accused me of false advertisement, “Where’s the little blue flowers, Norm?” Sorry, Gil, this year the flowers were white! The field was gorgeous as long as you stayed out of the mud.

Except for F1E, all the flying was done on Sunday. Field Marshall, Roger Morrell, masterfully got all the fly-offs completed before dark. Awards, the popular Buddenbohm glider kit raffle and the presentation of the famous Lost Hills Pistachio Crystal Bowls, were given by camp light.

A special thanks to Co-CD Roger Morrell. He moved flight lines, provided expert advice, basically kept the contest moving and had to listen to my whining on top of it all. BTW, Roger also processed 21 AMA affiliate apps for international fliers from all over the world (where the heck is Malta?).

The Lost Hills Association officers came to assist. Thankfully, Walt Ghio has for several years volunteered to collect LH field dues. Because the Ike is one of the first contests of the year, we get stuck with making sure your LH dues are paid along with AMA membership. I think Ted Firster got to see first hand what a chore this is. LH Association President, Hal Cover started out the day by pulling several fliers out of the mud and then proceeded to put in five maxes in Gollywock. Here’s the kicker – Hal then beat the hi tech/state of the art F1Q’s with an electric powered fifties era Sandy Hogan! Way to go Hal, you set back F1Q about 60 years!

The Ike sponsored 20th Anniversary Burger Bash was enjoyed by those that stayed on the field (we sure had a lot of burgers!). Unfortunately, we were unable to enjoy Peter Allnutt’s bonfire. Those that have attended the Taft Desert Challenge know what Peter can do with a bonfire and with Hector Diez’s help, he was ready!

At the Ike, we have tried to listen to your requests and we invite your participation. Jon Davis and Peter Brocks introduced F1E to the USA at the Ike. Bob White encouraged us to offer Nos Wake, Stan and Ralph, FAI style CLG, latest was the addition of Vint FAI Gas and Dave Parsons volunteered to be event director.

Come join us next year, maybe the flowers will be blue, and anyway, it’s become a Winter Classic!

Thanks to all for your years of support!

- Norm Furutani

Hi Friends..
Ernesto re-edited this Isaacson clip and it be seen again , in HD mode too.
Sorry for stalls on both launches, the camera slowed the climb too much.
Let's make soon more clips and from different angles too.

How High is High?

Dear Roger,

can you explain me how the "HIGHEST F1A HEIGHT LAUNCH CHALLENGE" was arranged?
Which altimeter measured the launches? How many tries had every pilot? Are these average values or counted just the best try?
Thanks for the information!

Greetings from Germany,
Johannes Seren
