liftGlasses by Favionics

Development of the latest in sensitive infrared sensors has resulted in the prototype of the first-ever thermal viewer. The wearer using these spectacles can see thermals up to a distance of 500 meters. liftGlasses will undergo field testing soon. The user can wear the glasses up to 20 minutes before the human eye can start to cause nausea and fatigue, enough to finish any fly off in the most tactically positive way. Since the image of thermal activity will be projected on a LCD display, the spectacles will have orifices to be able to see not only the thermal image but also perceive normal surroundings to avoid e.g. line crosses. Pending competition results of its developers over the coming two years (we intend to both win the World Cup once to proof feasibility) and FAI legislation, the liftGlasses will be marketed in 2012 at the earliest. A sneak preview of the prototype can be seen on our website http://favionics.com/downloads/LiftGlasses.jpg

Restriction on non-flying skills.

In the light of the No-Motto Flapping rule, we need to extend this thought to other skill areas that are not directly Free Flight flying skills. Here is the first, I’m sure there are  many other skills that should be outlawed.

Clubs and CDs must establish  local field rule to ban the use on long poles for the removal of models from trees.  Of course this rule is needed only for c ontests at fields with trees. Justification: There is a competitive advantage to those that have long poles and can get then to the field and have the developed skills using long poles.  Yes poles have been used by many for many years within reason (6-8 foot poles) but then there is someone pushing reasonableness and using 30 and 40 to even 50 foot poles. Those of us that fly to Muncie to compete can not bring long poles with us. Even if the organizer made long poles available for our use, many flyers compete on fields that do not require the use of long poles so we have not developed the skills to use long poles effectively.  Those who are well versed in the use of long poles will be able to retrieve their models and get back for following rounds in a timely manner, thus providing an unfair competitive advantage over those of us who are left staring up at our model stuck in atree. More important is that the use of such poles could be a safety hazard--the pole could fall and hit another flyer near by or even worse come into contact with power lines that are present at the Muncie site. Surely this would get AMA very upset and we could lose the use of Muncie for Free Flight. Surely we must be proactive and get these rules in place NOW.  Please do not let the fact that there have been no documented accidents or injuries from the use of long poles dissuade you from passing urgently needed ban on long poles.

Respectfully,

Jim Parker the pole-less flyer.

Upcoming EBay Action

Hello Free Flighters,

Texas Free Flighter Mark Troutman has volunteered to auction off the late
Bob Combs' model engine estate, and 100% of the proceeds will go to the
field rental on the Sendera Ranch flying site, home of the Texas Cloud
Climbers' Regional Championship meet, to be held October 16-17, 2010.

Please make note of the following ebay seller and visit his auctions often
in the coming weeks:

Bob was a top-class flyer and he owned many excellent FF engines. Among the
lot to be auctioned by Mark are: a new-in-the-box Tee Dee .09, Super Cyclone
.60, K&B .15, Stels .29, Shuriken .049 and a bunch of nice Super Tigres,
Coxes, K&B, and O.S. Maxes.

Mark says he will list the motors about 6-8 at a time each week over the
next few weeks. The link for Mark's account is:

Help for Ed

Hi Roger,

I am still looking for a proxy flier or fliers. Due to my heart condition I am not able to compete as I used to at the Nats and SAM Champs. Is anyone interested in helping an "old war horse"?
Thanks,
