The 2005 AmCup season is complete,. The King Orange did not change the top
places. Please review the results and let me know of any corrections.
The SCAT AmCup banquet is Saturday, Feb 18 at the Wasco Valley Rose CC as
in the past. Sign up via the MaxMen registration--George Batiuk.
The 2006 Am Cup contests will be the same as 2005 except: USFFC (LH)
sanction has been moved to the Winter Classic, Sierra Champs sanction
has been moved to the dual AmCup contests in Tangent. Also, the EFFC will
be flown at Wayaganda in 2006.
The South West Regional (Eloy) soon followed by the dual weekend of the
Winter classic and Max Men are just weeks way.

Desert Challenge
================

The SCAT Desert Challenge is this coming Saturday, Jan 7-2006. Peter
Allnutt reports the weather will be good with no rain which spoiled our
fun last year, Temps to be in the 60's dropping into the 50's in the
evening. Have No Fear--Peter has his wood collected for his version
of "Burning Man".
Come up for a casual contest, open rubber, open power and open
glider-- no rounds. 5$ entry. Bring bar-b-que and food for the fellowship
following the flying. The entry road is muddy but passable- should be fine
by Saturday. There is another way in about 1.5 miles east of the field.
Turn south onto Laveel Rd (near the Mircowave tower) a short section
is paved. Go about 200 yards, crossing over the gully and then head
toward the field on a good dirt road.

Hello Roger,
Could you please post the message below in the next update of SCAT news.

Thanks.

Chris

-------------------------------------------
Hi everyone,
I have a rather unique request to make. As side hobby to my F1A building, I
also collect
automotive license plates, and am trying to comple a set of one from each of
the 50
American States. I was wondering if anyone could help me in finding the
ones I am
missing:
Connecticut Idaho
Louisiana Maine
Massachusetts Mississippi
Nebraska Nevada
North Dakota Oklahoma
Vermont WestVirginia

If anyone has any of these lying in their garage that they would be willing
to part with, or
knows of anyone who may have them please let me know (or bring to the next
MaxMen
and leave with Peter Allnutt)

Thanks in advance.

Chris Lenartowicz (F1A Canada)

There was a series of articles on timers ( Clockwork and others ) in the Engine
collectors journal a few years. Pictures were included of a number of timers m
ade up into a display, which later made it into the AMA Museum in Muncie.

Hi Roger,

The clockwork timers are merely incidental. It occurred to me during the
last part of 2005 that, although I've flown F1A since the late '60s and
generally kept up with the literature, I'd never seen a time line that
identified the key technical developments in the class.

I've since identified what I consider to be the main technical advances
in F1A and managed, with help from friends, to put dates against most of
them. Some of the dates have surprised me. You can see the result on my
website, www.gregorie.org, in the Free Flight section.

All the best to all my free flight friends for 2006.

Martin

super glider arifoil?

So who has the best airfoil for towline gliders?? Or what is the best
airfoil for towline gliders?

But what is the next step in improving performance?? I mean real glide
performance, not just zooming it up higher by more speed at the launch.

Just some stuff for you guys to ponder for 2006. I want answers!
So who has the best airfoil for towline gliders?? Or what is the best
airfoil for towline gliders?

Skykieng says: I will stick out my neck and make the claim that I might
have the "best" glide duration airfoil....however it is to be found on
a F1C folder rather than on an F1A. Of course I am very interested in
what is being used on gliders. In fact, when one thinks about it, a
Folder is a purer example of a classic duration glider than a towline
glider!

I spent months trying out a multitude of airfoils on the Profili
software. What I finally came up does show a marked superiority to
current F1A pretenders -- or at least that is what the computer
indicates.

My "family" of airfoils are virtually curved plates of very high
camber with a mean camber a bit over 8%. The front part contains what
little thickness there is to be found ... a whopping 4.6% or so at 18%
of the chord.

These airfoils appear much like a Jedelsky section -- and I guess they
could be considered such -- but the curvature of the profile is markedly
different and it is that difference which seems to be responsible for
yielding a much higher "power factor."

How to make a wing using such a skinny section is indeed a challenge,
but that is beside the point if we are concerned with determining the
best pure glide section.

Of course my job in designing a folder using such a wing is much
easier than trying to outfit a glider that must be dragged sideways
thorough the air and then catapulted at a multitude of Gs... and the
glider has to accommodate a variety of angles of attack while going
through maneuvers --- a necessary demand that complicates things
immensely.

Can such a wing be built?

The only practical way that such a wing can be fabricated is to mold it
in a single piece of light graphite cloth ...wrapped around from nose to
tail. The carbon "sandwich" encapsulates a skinny foam core...shaped
much like a HLG wing with a 3" chord. After the panel cures I bore out a
spanwise hole and feed in a carbon tube spar. ( actually a hi-tech arrow
shaft ) Skinny or not the wing is reasonably stiff... in fact the
initial panel was too stiff for my use and I had to make some
adjustments.

the big drawback to this airfoil being used on a "Folder" is that the
resulting symmetrical section is horribly thick with a grotesque
profile. The resulting drag in the climb is outrageous. However, the
utra thin rear portion dances around this problem since the rear 1/2
of the wing becomes a flap that is reflexed by compression as the wing
is folded up... the end result is a wing with (theoretically) about 1/4
the drag of a conventional F1C wing. (I.e., half the wetted wing area
accompanied by half the Cd)

Now there are some caveats. Question: To turbulate or not. The glide
mode section does better on the computer program with a invigorator at
60% (where such a device has to be to actually cause a trip at that
chord position is another story however) How well does such a thin
section handle turbulent conditions that upset its ideal angle of
attack? And another worry is that such highly cambered sections are
basically unstable. And then there is the Re question, i.e., where is
the effectual saddle point to be found between Re and aspect ratio. In
this case I opted to be on the conservative side. A previous ship,
"Stretched Eagle" used a 25-1 AR, but for the "Shifty Eagle" I reduced
the span to 100" which gives a more modest AR of 20-1.

Okay! those are my thoughts on the subject. Maybe there is something
that can be applied to a Nordic ...excuse me...F1A. And hey!... Please
don't mention any of this to those two other guys, Fuzyeve and Babenko.
(:>))
