==========

The next issue will be number 1000 - since we started publishing SEN back in
95/96 time frame. Since that time it's a whole lot of your words we have
published. So how about some extra memorable ones for issue 1000. We depend
on your contribution to make this work.

Roger,
Terry Kerger has OKed the addition of Classic Towline Glider
to the events list of the San Valeers Annual, April 8-9
I asked him & he got an instant OK from Bob Mattes, so it is
sanctioned for National Cup points purposes.
[You owe me, Tim B!]
So dust off those birds & lets show up!

SCAT ANNUAL RESULTS & REPORT

OK, already.
So it hailed Friday. And it stopped. And hailed again.
Then it rained over night. And it snowed in the Tehachapis, closing the
I-5 Grapevine til 07:30.
We heard you were out there waiting for it to open up, so we held up the
start time til 10:00.
Also heard some stayed home. Understandable.
Well, we had a contest with 30 intrepid, stalwart fliers bunging in maxes
right & left in 10 of the 11events scheduled. F1P had no entry.

The biggest, baddest part of the storm mercifully steered itself to other
areas, although we did stop twice in the PM, when two big, dark squalls
appeared ready to inundate our little piece of FF heaven.
Luckily it gave lots of visual warning[dark& dramatic!], did not drop much
more than showers, then departed without too much wind or turbulence.
Nobody got stuck, or too muddy, the puddles were small, as the rains
were not concentrated, giving drying time.
Due to the late start & stoppages, the flying ceased at 1700 hrs,
with 6 rounds of F1A-B-C on the books.
It did get windy about then, too, with some 9m/s gusts seen.
The flyoffs were held Sunday at 07:30 in a moderate breeze to
the east, as we often experience.
Mike Thompson score a BIG win in F1H, with the highest time
of the weekend as well.

Now I say THANKS to all who came, especially the out-of-staters,
Charlie Jones, Norm Poti, Blake Jensen, Dick Wood.
And to those patient ones who were held at Castaic while the
snow was being cleared from I-5.
And to Tim, ['I need the points'] Batiuk, who went long way round,
via Ventura up 101, an extra hun miles, just to keep me 'company'
[& from scabbing 63 free Nat Cup Glider points].

Good job.

And my BIGGEST THANKS go to those folks who lent a helping
hand to keep the events running as smooth as it did.
Especially Rene Limberger, who abided my sometimes anxious
moments, and ran the score table very well for a good part of the contest.
Here is hoping we have better conditions and more fliers next year.

yr hmbl CD,
Lee Hines

Could you please add me to the suppliers page of the SCAT site. We operate
under 2 different name, KT Marketing and F1D.biz both share the same online
ordering site and offer the same products. Best link to use is
www.F1D.biz/order to go directly to the online catalog and ordering site.

We just release an updated rendition of the classic Jim Jones designed balsa
stripper. We changes the main body to hard anodized 6061 T6 aluminum and CNC
machine the entire unit. We also sell carbon fiber pultrusion cap strip
stock in 1, 1.5, 2, 3 mm widths on 20 meter rolls. The majority of our model
products are more oriented to the indoor rubber flier and include boron
filament and many other hard to locate items as well as Tru-Weight indoor
balsa wood. We are also Sherline and Taig dealers for the enthusiast that
wants to set up a table top machining shop.

Thanks in advance,

Bear Cup on Lake Pyhajarvi , Finland.

Another wonderful Bear Cup on Lake Pyhajarvi near Pori, Finland.

The morning was cold, 7 a clock in the meter at my accommodation even down -30
deg C! Till the beginning of the contest 10 a clock bright sun on the cloudless

skies warmed it to - 20 ..17, but it was not too bad when calm and dry. But it'
s
easy to understand than power fliers decided to wait over the first round. At
the afternoon it warmed up close to 0 to fully enjoy free flight!
Wind stayed off all the day. Towing was almost to any direction. 3 minutes
flights landed some 100 meters from the starting place! So retrieving was easy
when there were only some 5 centimetres of snow on ice surface. Also coming to
the contest place on the middle of the large lake was easily by cars on over 60

cm thick ice.
Most flights were maxes. If not, there used to be some mistake like too slow
running speed when releasing (specially younger juniors) or too eager trimming
to bumping.

Power fliers made fly-off unlimited. Timo Niiranen of Finland, nr. 4. in
Argentina, made maybe the best flight, but motor cowling was dropped at motor
stop. Timo did not refly but went retrieving.

scat anual f1j rules

roger.
it appears that jim parker and the powers to be at the
scat anual have gone off the deep end on the f1j rules
change.
i mean those rules realey suck.
why don't you go by the fai rules and let it be?
fai committe made theese rules and they don't need to
be changed just because somebody wants to change them
to there likeing.
the fai rules were made to be followedby so than use
them.
i know if i were going to the scat anual i would not
fly f1j under theese rules that jim and scat have come
up with.
and i hope the rest of the f1j flyers that do attend
the scat anual follow suit ond opt not to fly f1j at
thhis meet to.
thx Don.

Subject: maynard...how he did it

Here is a current discussion of speed.

http://www.alphalink.com.au/~hughan/World%20Records.htm

Seems that Maynard took his plane up to altitude then dove it
vertically picking up maximum speed, then he pulled it out to skim
across the course before the speed bled off. The after-thought was that
it over sped the pitch/rpm/prop he was using....needed more pitch else a
higher-reving engine.

According to these Australians above, the current F pylon whatsevers
radio ships exceed Maynard's record speed on their normal flight course
in competition. The special ship they mention sounds like it would do
the job most readily.

I could be wrong but I seriously doubt that Maynard's airfoill was
anything exceptional. He is getting into a Renolds number range that
could benefit from some of the five and six digit NASA laminal
airfoils. But we are not that big or go that fast.

For fun after talking to you I ran a few airfoils through the mill. I
took an NACA 0006 and bent the camber to 3.75. I could have done the
same at another department -- I could create any desired "NACA: four
diget foil by simply specifying, say NACA 3405....or 3418..and I would
get the coordinates and the drawing by created by Profili using the the
NACA building block fomulas.

Anyway, the glide was not good and the climb draggy....it looked a
bit like an typical FAI section such as Achterbergs, etc. The uncambered
symetrical 0006 was of course as fast as the dickens!

While Looking around I found a couple of Eppler sections that look
superfically like mine --same camber, thickness ...everything... but
with a flatter back. They turned out to be beyond lousy! The drag in
the glide was about three times mine. That surprised me! I was concerned
that they would be better and I would have to retool! Whew!

I think that I understand what you are trying to do. You figure that
the section profile having low drag can translate into a low drag
profili when cambered. But it doesn't work that way! The conditions are
different and so are the effects. For a glide it would be beneficial to
have the rear undercamber higher( that is hypothetically above) than the
top camber! ...a little hard to do unless you invoke another dimension
of reality to play with!

I can't understand how a person as forward-looking as youself --- with
all sorts of brilliant little design touches in his patent portfolio is
so dead-set about rejecting folders (I can understand shying away from
flappers...that IS a difficult task yielding only a modicum of gain)
Your mindset of sticking with obsolete ways reminds me of all the
opposition I got trying to get flyers to understand WHY they needed
Auto-gimmicks, and why the flip-over (later we found out that it was
actually called a "bunt" in aerobatics) was such a neat way to make a
transition....Hell, it took forever to get them to even use
starters....then bikes...ad infinitum

But the folders are now making an appearance via Babenko's
Snap-Wing, and they are dominating. Randy Archer says that his
Snap-Wing is no more difficult to fly than his conventional ships....but
of course his conventional ships are too difficult for me to fly!

I have looked at hundreds of airfoils using profili and there is no
magical miracles to be found...not a one that could bridge the gap
between climb and glide without being inferior in each mode as a result
of the compromize....try to boost one aspect and the other suffers in
proportion. And what was suprising is that some of the sections with
good reps over the years are not exceptional at all on the computer...
they lag behind.

Of course I wil be most happy to check out what you send.

So there! you semi-sweet old fart you! Come up to speed as we enter
the 21st century!!! (:>))

Palm M105 capacitor

Hi Roger,

I bought a very nice Palm M105 to use with the Black Magic.
Every time I changed the batteries (in few seconds) the memory was
cleared and I had to synchronize again (this can't be done at the flying
field...).

Browsing a forum I discovered that it is an issue with the Palm M1xx
series (the capacitor is defective). May be you know this problem an you
can tell me where to find a capacitor replacement.
Thank you.

Servo Stuff
===========

Gene

It may not be a quick answer.

As most of us have figured many of the servos are made by the
same people with often only very minor differences.

The rotation is to do with how it is wired internally. The Magic
timers have a servo reverse feature so that by checking a box it
can make the servo around the other way. Actually what it does
is subtract the servo position from 255.

Some people claim they have had trouble with the sevo reversing
feature but we have not been able to replicate the situation in
a controlled environment.

Some people like to have the same servo positions mean the same
things in all of their airplanes. Actually there is nothing
magic about the numbers but if you want to have the D/T always
at servo position 250 that's OK.

One futher word of warming. the servo we use are mass produced
devices and the quality can vary as you found and the direction
of rotation. Also so can the amounty of movement, I've bought
the same servo twice and had significantly different rotational
limits. I went back to ask about this and you can imagine the
reply.

I know that some of the top of the line builders like M&K and
Stamov check each individual servo and clean up the assembly to
bet more consistant results.

On Victor's airplanes he likes to have to same values in the
timer, so he can easily check a customer's airplane to see if
the timer is still up correctly and the customer has not made
some bad adjustments. To support this some of my timers have a
'fractional' servo multipler. Victor tests each servo and sees
how much it moves in a test set up. Lets say for a movement from
a value of 10 to one of 210 the servo was to move 100 degress
and the multipler was 5. But on a testing a new servo it only
moved 95 degrees. To get that increased movement we need to use a
bigger multipler so it would be 5 X 100 / 95 = 5.25.

For most people this does not matter, they make the adjustments
during the trimming process.

One other point when giving the example about D/T at 250 , I
deliberatly chose that not 255 right at the end of the travel.
Only use the extreems of travel if you have no other choice.
The quality of the servo is least good right at the edge.

Hi Roger,

Your scat newsletter has an incorrect email address
for me in the last issue for anyone that wants the
contest flyer emailed to them.

It should be This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I made it! A truly new type of competition gas model will be in the 2006
Symposium. The "Meteorboat" a convertable flying boat to landplane. Easily
converted. The hull is held on with magnets which is replaced by a wheel. Ed
