I think it is appropriate that we show thanks and give our support to
all the volunteer leaders that make our sport happen. If not for those
that freely give of their time as club officers, organizers, contest
directors, helpers, timers, etc.., our sport would not exist. While I
can't name them all, I'll leave that up to others, I'd like to recognize
one guy because some undeserved criticism has recently come his way in
these pages. Regardless of what we think of F1J rules, Jim Parker has
unselfishly given of his time and energy to the great benefit of this
sport for many years. He didn't campaign to become Scat club president,
but has done so out of a sense of unselfish service. He has volunteered
his time on behalf of our Jr team program. He gives time to make
America's cup work. He helps make our team program work. Most of all
he is a steady calming influence and a friend and helper to everyone on
the flying field. Thank you Jim.
What Jim has said recently regarding rules was the consensus of a whole
club and resulted from discussions of many people at club meetings. He
spoke on behalf of the club, not himself. I suggest that those who have
other ideas should volunteer their time to attend meetings or form clubs
or give of themselves to help in some way.

Special Free Flight Quarterly issue on Coupes (F1G)
==================================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Last year Free Flight Quarterly published a couple of issue on P30
models that were well received by our readers, numerous among the FFML
list. This year we present two Special Coupe d'Hiver issues, for April
and July.
The history of the Coupe d'Hiver is interesting, going back to pre WW2
times. It was the idea of the editor of a modelling magazine in Paris
that contests should also be held even in winter time, and donated a Cup
for that purpose in 1938. Since then the "Winter Cup" competitions have
been regularly scheduled, even during wartime in France, slowly
spreading to other countries at first; today it is a very popular event
in most aeromodelling countries, one of the "small" FAI classes. The
present rules are simple: 10 gr maximum rubber weight, 70 gr minimum
airframe weight, all else is free, so there is a great deal of scope for
the enthusiastic designer and builder. Competitions are flown to a 120
s. maximum, five flights, but the better Coupes can do 4 minutes in dead
air...an amazing achievement considering the small motor.
The Special issues of Free Flight Quarterly attempt to document the
Coupe history by presenting a variety of articles and plans on the
models that have been famous in its past and recent history, as well as
technical articles to help the designer. The April issue concentrates on
modern Coupes, the July issue will deal with the Vintage Coupes
(pre-1956), which have a strong following in Europe and elsewhere, as
well as with more articles on contemporary Coupe issues.
Contributors to these two issues include well-known specialists from
many countries, who describe the genesis and development of their Coupe
models, many times with a very interesting discussion of their choices
in construction and of the procedures used for trimming and flying.
The cover and complete article index of the April issue may be found in
our website: www.freeflightquarterly.com

F1J Rules

F1J at SCAT Annual.
As a regular F1J competitor, I would make the following observat
ions regarding the F1J rules.
1. Those currently flying the class appear to enjoy it as it is.
2. The performance of the models is considerably in excess of th
e 2 minute max.
3. It can be a nightmare for the contest organisers at fly off t
ime, with often unsatisfactory
sp; outcomes.
The first reaction of the rule changers is to cut the engine run
.
We have seen from the F1C experience that this has hastened the
development of geared engines, and folding wings, which in turn has probably le
d to a reduction in numbers participating, as a result of the complexity/expens
e.
I realise that there are no FAI rule changes to the class immine
nt, but it is probably only a matter of time.
My initial reaction would be to leave the rules as they are, lea
rn to live with the fly off situation, and enjoy it.
If the rules have to be changed, leave the run at 7 seconds, but
specify sraight fuel. this would lead to some reduction in performance, is con
venient for those that also fly F1C, and is easier for those countries where it
is difficult to obtain nitromethane,

Fuel for Diesel Engines
I have an old 2.5 Russian diesel engine that I want to use. In Europe I was
able to go to the local drug store and get the main ingredients to make the
fuel myself. Where do you buy Ether and/or ethyl alcohol in the US. Is there
a pre-mixed fuel available?
Thanks,

Easy fix for the Palm m100 and m105 Capacitor Problem

Easy fix for the Palm m100 and m105 Capacitor Problem
For the Capacitor problem with Palm m100 and m105 referenced on Issue 999 by
Fernando I have an easy fix.
According to my research this is a common problem that usually surfaces at
the end of 2 years of regular use of the Palm m100 and m105. It is caused by
the failure of the capacitor that is supposed to give enough current to the
unit during a battery change to avoid memory loss.
You can obtain the capacitor for these devices and change them but that
isn't that easy and that approach doesn't extend the battery life.
Here is my fix:
1) Get an external battery compartment. Radio Shack has these compartments
in stock. You can use any size compartment as long as it uses 2 cells
connected in series with an output voltage of 3Volts. AAA, AA and even
larger sizes are OK for longer battery life.
2) Attach the battery compartment to the back of the Palm using double sided
tape or Velcro.
3) Open the battery compartment on the Palm and connect the secondary
battery compartment in parallel (+ to + and - to -) to the battery
compartment inside the palm. On m100 and 105, when the Palm is lying on its
face with the PC connector jack on the bottom, the top lead on the right is
Positive (+) and the bottom lead on the right is (-). Try to solder the
power cables with minimum amount of solder and heat, preferably at the point
closest to the face of the Palm, keeping in mind that you will need to use
this compartment as usual with regular size batteries and close the cover
after cutting a notch on the side of it for the cables going to the new
compartment to fit.
4) Install the batteries into the Palm's battery compartment, and to the new
compartment you added.
Option: Install a power jack on your palm for the external battery
compartment and use it only when you need the extended battery life or when
you are changing batteries.
As long as you don't change all 4 batteries at once (as long as one of the
compartments has both batteries in place to be more accurate) your problem
should be fixed and you get at least double or triple the battery life out
of your Palm depending on what size of a battery compartment you used.
This fix has worked for me, but I can't take any responsibility for damages
caused by my suggestion. Please try it at your own risk.

Palm 105 fix from down under
============================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Hello Fernando,
Yes the memory backup capacitor in the Palm 105 is not very reliable.
The one in my Palm failed and a similar replacement also failed. I think the
problem is that the caps used are only rated at 2.5 V and the batteries
produce 3. I eventually put in a 0.22 F, 5V capacitor that I got from RS
Electronics (RS part number 337-372, AU$4.12). It's lasted a couple of=
years
now. The RS cap is a bit bigger and you have to use a wire for one
connection but this is not a problem as there is enough space.

Palm Programmers and chargers

Hello Roger
I have a number of Palm units for sale on my website. Most of them are
Palm IIIXE, and are like new. Also have carrying cases. I have decided
that to be serious in electronic controlled models, one must have 2
units just in case!
One of the big problems with the Palm units is the small batteries, and
if you let them go down, you lose the program. I have recently received
6 NiMH battery conversion kits and chargers. It comes in a neat little
bag that you can keep your charger cable in, a replacement battery
cover, NiMH rechargeable battery pack, and a cigarette lighter plug in
adapter. It works well, and it will hold a charge for several weeks. I
sure got tired of purchasing throw away batteries. This kit is $15.
You can see these items at:
http://www.glidetek.com/accessories/Palm.asp
I really enjoy the SCAT bulletin board, and when you don't post
something for two weeks, suffer from withdrawal.

Don,
I have spoken with you many a time through e-mail and not once have you
said anything positive about free flight. Everyone is entitled to their
opinion but seriously, its not like you showed up to fly at the scat so
I really don't understand your complaint. It is not as though the F1J
rules have been changed for good! Only for the scat annual will these rules
be in place. All that Jim Parker did was PRESENT this possible change
to the scat club and WE as a club voted on it. Just like the F1H rules
veered away from the usual format, but again it was voted on and passed
almost unanimously by the scat club. I've never even seen your name appear
on so much as a score card, and I sure haven't seen you out at lost hills
recently, so I just ask you to stop criticizing every aspect about
how we run our meets. If you have something to say back to me, I'd love
to hear it. Its stupid arguments like this that tear the focus away from
the sport from what it should be...and it should be..
Fly for the love of the game!

is a Dutch outfit that will replace the Goldcap capacitor in a Palm
M.105 - thats the one that keeps the Palm alive while you change the
batteries.
Be aware that the Goldcap is easily damaged. Installing the batteries
backwards will damage the capacitor but the Palm will often survive.
My M.105 has a damaged Goldcap. Three battery changes ago I tried
connecting two fresh external AA batteries in a holder across the
battery terminals while I changed the internal AAA cells. The external
battery connections fell off halfway through the change but, to my
surprise, the Palm didn't need reloading. Even more surprisingly the
next battery change, which I did without the external battery, also
worked without needing to reload the Palm. I don't know why that worked
but it did: maybe putting fresh batteries across the Goldcap improved
its condition.
You should change the battery a bit early, rather than waiting until the
sign pops up telling you to "Hotsync and change the battery NOW".
I just got caught that way. Hotsyncs chew a lot of battery and there
wasn't enough juice left in the batteries for the Hotsync to finish so
the Palm died in mid-Sync. This froze the PC end of the Hotsync and I
had to reboot the PC to get Hotsync to run again. The good news is that
this didn't damage any files on the PC. I replaced the battery,
restarted the Palm and was able to recover it with the next Hotsync
session.
Quite apart from getting the batteries as flat as mine obviously were, I
think that if you leave the replacement really late then even a good
Goldcap may not have enough charge left to run the Palm while you swap
the batteries even if you change one battery before changing the other
one.
Its better to get in the habit of looking at the battery state indicator
and make the change when its showing 25-30% full. The indicator is just
a voltmeter and when its below the halfway mark the batteries are a lot
more than half empty.
I hope this is useful information.

When you open the servo, you will fing five wires from the servo
electronics board going further into the servo. Two go to the servo motor,
and three to the potentiometer. What you need to do is first swap the
wires going to the motor, and second swap the outmost wires to the
potentiometer with each other. In other words, the central wire to the pot
will keep in place. Swapping the motor wires will make it run backwards,
and swapping the pot wires will make it read the servo position in
"reverse". As a result, your servo will run backwards.
This is something RC people used to know before they invented servo
reverse on their transmitters. And not with FF timers with similar
feature, that information is about to become lost in the history... :)
