Roger,

The old SCAT club is rapidly disappearing. I just got news that Inza Hartill
died yesterday. She had a stroke in June and never recovered. Please put
this in the SCAT electronic news, so their friends in Europe will know.

Jean Bogart

Inza is the wife of SCAT founding member Bill Hartill. Bill and Inza
took part in many FAI events world wide and were salwart supporters
of the FAI Free Flight movement for over 40 years.

US Junior Team and america's Cup Status
=======================================
One contest short of the half way point of the 2005 Am Cup season.
Four weeks away from the Jr Team Selection Pre-Nats + Nats. Repeated from
my last posting:

Below are the current Jr Team Selection scores; remember that seeing
your name on this list DOES NOT mean that you are registered in the
program. Registration is free thru AMA (see NFFs web link:
http://www.freeflight.org/competition/juniors/juniors.htm) until a week
before the PreNats Jr Team Selection contest on July 31, 2005. On the field
entry can be done on July 30 and 31 (before the contest start) but is
discouraged with a 50$ late fee.

You do not need to have flown in an Am Cup contest to enter the Jr TS Program
and fly at the PreNats + Nats portion of the Jr TS Program. However,
participation in the PreNats+ Nats is a required by the rules to make the
2006 Jr Team.

Jr Team Selection New Letter #5 hard copy with the PreNats information
has been mailed.

Sky-Scraper Annual FAI Results

Here are the FAI results from the Sky-Scraper Annual July 9-10, 2005.
Winds were from the west and northwest, usually at 6 to 12 miles per
hour. Saturday we flew the mini-FAI and AMA events from the turf sod
farm. Sunday the AMA events remained there, while the 3 minute max
events went upwind launching from a grass area adjacent to some corn
so as to target landing on the sod downwind. Proximity to upwind trees
made for turbulent conditions for the FAI flyers Sunday. This is not
unusual for us in the late morning and afternoon, but the fact that
Sunday began with these conditions was a discouragement. A number of
Wakefield competitors were there (Biedron, McGlashan, Ioerger, Lacey,
Felix, Radziunas) but except for a couple of flights by Ron Felix and
Sarah Radziunas, they all chose to save their models for calmer
settings.

Nontheless, there was a lot of good flying, with 12 competitors
in F1A Nordic, and 10 competitors in F1H (small towline glider).
That is a record number for us in F1H, precipitated largely by a
design and kit by Dennis Phelan flown by 6 of the competitors from
the Connecticut Wilber and Orville Society.

Highlights include the good performances by Art Ellis and Timothy
Barron (Age 11) in F1A, by Tom Ioerger and David Lacey in Coupe,
and by Rick Ivers and Vic Nippert in F1H. Additional highlights
from AMA events (not shown here) include Junior wins by Margaret
Debroth, Brian Pacelli, and Mariam Whitney, including more gas
event flying than we have seen from juniors in recent years.

Paper tubes
===========

Further to my previous communication, some more research. For a dowel or
carbon rod of 3 mm diameter, cut a piece of paper 70 mm high(by 40 mm wide
as before). Follow previous procedure by pre-rolling back and forth before
startring the tube, then place normal balsa cement on the first third.
Commence rolling up to this third point, keeping a tight hold on the tube
being so formed with both fingers, and with your third hand add more cement
to the rest of the paper, and continue to roll. But after about 55-60 mm.
stop and add some cyano and finish the tube. This results in a very stiff
tube with an outside dimension of 4mm (i.e., a wall thickness of 0.5 mm)

When's the 2005 Poitou event, on a different tack?

Mike S

Frank Spearman's (ex IMAC) widow has some of his Craftsman machine tools
for sale at good prices. They are metal lathe (they don't make it
anymore) with many tools and attachments 500.00, floor model bandsaw
100.00, table saw 100.00' drill press 75.00. Anyone interested let me
know. Also there is 6 large boxes of balsa 6 to 10 pound, mostly 7# all
weighed and marked. Some of it is spruce and pine cut for spars and
triangular for box corners. Some balsa trailing edges, and spars, some
fiberglass tapered booms like about 1/2" to 1/4"x 18" or 24". MANY 3"
sheets 36 and 48 inch long. Mostly 1/8" sheet but much more thicker and
thinner. If you guys don't want it it goes on ebay. I am trying to help
her out. She is a hard working middle age middle income woman of Polish
decent trying to survive on her own. Ed Mate

Ed Mate:
Nope, not the 'Air-O' Zeek. Wish it was, but I'm just now getting back into
the swing, having spent the past 30 years in C/L. It's a 1/2A kit version
by Lee Campbell.....Wasp .049 power (with much help & advice from Bob
Stalick). What's REALLY interesting to note is that when I announced plans
to fly at next Jan's SW Regionals (Eloy), fellow CL Stunt flyers Keith
Trostle and Bart Klapinski indicated a desire to join-in (A/2 and Top Banana
200, respectively). And as a result of my prior posting here, received very
nice greetings from Randy Secor and Jean Andrews. Previously had contact
from Mik Mikkelson and a couple of others, too. Now I get a reply from Ed
Mate.....a name that I read about in the '50s. What a hobby! I love it.

Black Sea Cup
=============

A business trip let me get over to Odessa to fly in this year's Black Sea
Cup and try out the new field that will be used for the '06 Euro Champs
and '07 World Champs. The site is a military training base just a few KM
from the Black Sea. I'm not sure exactly how big the field is but it was
plenty large for this year's event that included a windy F1B fly off. The
ground surface is a little rough in places with a few holes. There are
trees on the very edge of the field but there are really no major obstacles.

The CD was Victor Stamov and like other events where the CD is an active
sportsman a lot of attention is given making a great event for the
contestants. F1B and F1C day was perfect, the sky was over cast, so it was
not to hot and there was only a gentle breeze. This put 25 F1B men in the
flyoff. Following round 7 we waited until 7 PM for the 5 min fly off. By
that time the wind has come up and 5 minutes took us to the tree line at the
edge of the field. I flew early with the Turkish flyer and we both went
behind the trees, I landed in the top of 20 m tree, missing the Max by 12
seconds and the Turkish sportsman just cleared the trees and glided behind
missing by 3 seconds. It was deemed to be too windy to do the 7 mins so
we returned next morning to an alternate flight line 2 KMs or so upwind
from the previous eveneing. For this fly off Burdov got off right away and
ended up in the number one spot and this time older Vivchar, Igor beat
Vladimir and got second place. On F1C Babenko's folder blew everything else
away. Before the contest he had a close shave on a test flight where one
wing partially opened and model was saved by the D/T. In the fly off
there was no question, the altitude gain has to be one of the best ever,
with a truly F1A like glide when the wings pop out.

F1A day was much more tricky with medium wind and turbulent conditions with
bright sunshine. This was evidenced by the fact that only 7 out of 52 made
the fly off. A tough break for the Ukrainan junior team member Alexy Samsonov
who was clean until the last round. Stamov waited until 8 PM to do the
flyoff. It was perfect conditions, the breeze had dropped and conditions were
clear giving a great fly off. Post processing caused some drama. One
sportsman's tow line flag was not rectangular even though well about the
minimum. The jury ruled that the place should stay as it gave the best
sporting result. In addition while another sportsman off chasing his fly
off flight one of the helpers gave a model for processing, it was weight
and found to be under weight, only to transpire later that this model
was not flown in the even and the helper had included the wrong
[lighter] wing wire ! What was interesting is that during the discussion on
these points not once this the size of the prize, several thousand Euros,
never come up. The jury and organizers only talked about the rules and
sporting considerations - like it should be.

This even has a unique characteristic with the sponsor ship of Alexander
Marakhovsky's Farlep company. Marakhovsky an entrepreneur and supporter the
Odessa, Black Sea resort area believes that we need to have fun as well as
flying seriously. This sponsor ship provided entertainment every evening and
children's actions [clowns etc] during the day. This additional attraction
provided entertainment for the family members and I know that the
younger sports people appreciated the disco - whatever it takes to
attract Juniors !

Would I come back - Yes! was it a good contest - Yes!. Next time I will
sleep further from the Disco!
