New Model Black Magic Timers

The first Version 3 Black Magic timers have been released. These timers have a
number of new features from the user's point of view. The versions currently
available are the single servo timers for F1A/H and F1B. Two servo Timers have
been completed and are in final testing, they should be available in time for
the Isaacson Winter Classic and MaxMen contest in February.
The timers are equipped with a buzzer. The buzzer provides additional feedback
to the sportsman. There are 7 functions, some of them are optional.
1. D/T length feed back. On power up or reset the timer beeps to show the length
of the D/T setting. There is one high pitched beep for each minute of D/T and a
low pitched beep for each remaining 15 seconds. So a D/T setting of 212 seconds
[3 minutes 32 seconds] would give 3 high pitched beeps and 2 low pitched beeps.
The 2 seconds over the 3 minutes 30 seconds is ignored by the beeper mechanism.
But NOT by the timer ! The D/T length indicated is the currently selected D/T -
this could be the primary D/T time or one of the alternate D/Ts, depending on
the status of the Alt D/T switch[es]. This feature is optional and can be turned
of at the Palm Pilot. [F1A and F1B Timers]
2. Audio indication of programming. When the connection between the timer and
programming Palm Pilot there is a low pitched noise. This is always active. [F1A
and F1B timers]
3. Timer armed. This is a F1B only feature. When the timer is armed , i.e. the
start button is depressed and the LED illuminated, the buzzer sounds. It stops
when the button is released and the timer starts. [F1B Timers only]
4. Hook unlatch. When the hook is unlatched and forward the buzzer sounds. This
is a glider feature to indicated to the sharp hearing sportsman that the hook is
unlatched and he should launch. [F1A/H feature]
5. Beep on tow. This feature generates a beep every second when the model is on
circle tow. The beep is suppressed when the hook is forward. This feature is
optional and can be turned off at the Palm Pilot. {F1A/H only]
6. Beep on flight. This feature generates a beep every second during flight. The
beep is suppressed during a timer step function. This feature is optional and
can be turned off at the Palm Pilot. [F1A/H and F1B timers]
7. Beep on D/T. This feature generates a high pitched beep on D/T. After the D/T
function has been executed the timer waits for 3 to 5 seconds [depending on the
timer version] for the D/T action to complete. It then turns the servos off. At
this time the D/T will start. A beep is generated every second. This beep is
higher pitch than the beep during the flight. This feature is optional and can
be turned off at the Palm Pilot. [F1A/H and F1B timers] For F1B timers pressing
the start button will stop the beeping. This is to saves batteries when the
model is picked up.
Note that most of these functions are optional and can be turned off by
un-setting a check box on the MORE screen on the Palm Pilot. The beep does
consume power so will cause the battery to run down faster. However some of
these features have been available on RedMagic timers and optional on
BlackMagic. No undue battery problems have been found.
New Power-up Features.
======================
There are two new features that can be selected at timer power-up or timer
reset.
On an F1A Timer push the hook forward and on a F1B hold the start button while
turning the timer on or pushing the reset. Let the timer run through the D/T
count and a continuous high pitch beep will sound.
Release the hook or start button and the high pitch beep will stop. It will be
replaced by a sequence of short beeps. Each beep represents the length of the
new D/T time in minutes. Push the hook forward or the start button to select the
new D/T time. So if you wanted a 5 minute D/T time you would let 5 beeps pass
and the push the hook forward [or the start button]. Now the timer will issue a
short low pitch noise and go back to the start position to give the D/T count.
You would then hear 5 high pitched beeps. This process does not change the time
in excess of the even number of minutes. So if the timer was set to 3 minutes
and 5 seconds when the D/T was changed to 5 minutes, it would be 5 minutes and 5
seconds. This feature only sets the primary D/T. It will not reset the alternate
D/Ts. The time set will be permanent until it is changed, either by this process
or by resetting the timer from the Palm Pilot. [F1A/H and F1B timers]
The second start up feature works as follows. Hold the hook forward or the start
button depressed as above until the continuous high pitch noise changes to a low
pitch. Release the hook or start button and the D/T function will be activated
immediately. Some sportsman need this feature to set their model up.
You can see that there are quite a number of features. We understand that
different sportsmen like to configure their models to suit their personal
preferences, that is why we offer such a wide range of features, most of which
can either be turned off or ignored if they do not suit personal preferences.
The Version 3 timers are very slightly smaller than the older models at 33.5 x
25.7 mm. Internally the clock speed of the processor has been increased to 20
Mhz to provide greater accuracy and support more functions. These timers run
at 3 volts to reduce the power consumption and likelyhood of brown outs. The 3
volts is obtained by voltage regulator on the timer so the same batteries as
with other timers should be used. The voltage to the servo and buzzer is not
regulated so is still that provided by the batteries.
These timers cost $75 for just the timer or $110 for the start up kit.
The buzzer is mounted on the back of the timer. As a order time option a larger
buzzer can be mounted on the front of the board. This protrudes over the top
edge of the board and is higher than the LED and switch. Optionally this larger
buzzer can be provided so the sportsman can mount it himself separately from the
timer.
This timer requires a new Version of the Palm Pilot program. This program will
work with the older version 1 and 2 timers and well as the latest version 3.
This program is freely available to all BlackMagic customers. Note that for the
feature to be supported it has to be present in both the timer and Palm Pilot
program. Getting the new Palm Pilot program will not make these features
available on old model timers.
It is not possible to upgrade older timers to support these features.
In the past we have provided BlackMagic timers with either connectors on the
back or wires that typically came from the front of the timer. This model is
only provided with connectors on the back. Over the last few years users have
reported problems with timers with the wires. Typically these were caused by the
wires not being properly soldered or supported. For this reason we are no
longer providing that configuration.
We recommend that tape be put across the back of the timer and connectors to
provide additional security in holding the connectors on.
Hall Effect Switch Kit
======================
Two Hall Effect options are available. A Hall Effect Transistor is one that is
effected by an external magnetic field. They can be used to make a solid state
switch similar to a reed switch. The Hall Effect Devices are small transistors
that are only about 3mm square. Typically they are mounted in the fuselage of an
F1A and a magnet is mounted on the tow hook. As the magnet moves close to the
device the 'switch' closes and hook forward or unlatch is detected. These have
the advantage that they are not easily damaged like a reed switch, do not have
noisy or high resistance contacts and are not susceptible to dirt or moisture.
The do require an additional wire to provide power to run them. As with reed
switches setup is required to get the magnets the right distance from the
switch.

In both cases wiring diagrams are provided to show how to connect the devices.
The power to run the Hall effect device can come from the timer. If you specify
that you will be using Hall Effect at the time of your order an extra pin will
be provided.

Can you tell the specific dates for the Issacson? I've been to the web =
sites, but they have not been updated for 2003.
I found the dates for the MaxMen in Scat En as 14-17 Feb. I am assuming =
that the Issacson is the week before, but I'd like to have that =
confirmed before I make my travel reservations.

I think plans are as many as builders of model box. One point on air
travel worthiness: my current F1B box is made of 2.5mm plywood, and it has
traveled pretty well for 10 years now. The seams seem to take some damade
every now and then. Two years ago I built a travel case for it of 25mm (1
in) blue foam, and this works pretty well. So for my next model box (which
I'd need build next spring) I'd use much thinner plywood or possibly thin
plywood and a coat of glass cloth on top, but build the foam cover box for
air travel.

REGARDING F1C BUNT: I think that having the model in the set up that gives
lowest drag would be the most efficient way to transfer kinetic energy at the
end of the engine run into extra height gain. So a bunt and transition to
glide at the last practical moment seems a good idea.

Gil I ran my climb program with the canard configuration for 4 cases listed
below.
I believe that the relative difference in height will be similar for most
F1C. The program is a 3 degree of freedom using typical model airfoil data.
It computes all the motions for .01 second periods over 8 sec. The thrust is
computed from another program which uses engine test power.

Why do we love this free flight hobby so much? There are so mamy
challenges to it, but the real goal is to enjoy the beauty of it all. If
we win, we consider that a bonus.
There is so much joy to be had watching your model floating in the
twilight air on a warm evening. In many competitions there is the
challenge of making 5 minutes in the early morning air, and the great
satisfaction that comes when one does accomplish that feat.
There is the challenge of waiting patiently for a thermal and to
recognize it when it does pass by. It is like casting for a big bass.
What pleasure there is when you realize that you have "hooked it". Then
to enjoy seeing your model slowly ascend up into the sky---just floating
up there. Free! Flying free! Floating on a cushion of air. There is no
hobby or sport quite like free flight.

I thought I had a login on the SEN site, but it didn't recognize my
password....It was quite old. If you could, please arrange it so I can
re-register as "themaxout" or reset my password or something.
The reason I am writing is that I am the former RGOA Thermal Poles
from a bunch of years back. I used to get the poles from China through
Shakespeare. I had made friends with the local Shakespeare rep and he
managed to wrangle Shakespeare to inventory them. They bought ten thousand
or so and I was able to get them in minimum lots of 100. Shakespeare ate the
other costs. These were nice 21 footers and were what the team had when Ken
Phair first made the team.
Shakespeare made an audit of their warehouse sometime later and
out without my knowledge to some surplus pan fish outlet for crappies. I
never was able to track them down after that.
Now, they have recently come up with a line of poles called
"Wonderpole" which is virtually similar to the old 21 footer TP-1050's I used
to sell, only now they are billed as 20 feet long, 6 section, telescoping.
These new ones are fiberglass base tubes and carbon fiber at tip and are
cheaper than I was able to buy them back then. Now they list for $19.95 at
the Shakespeare website: . Click on the link

Also, Just re-discovered during a Holiday garage search. M&K left some F1C
props and a hand cranked engine starter. The props look like Fuzeyev's, see
Model Aviation Jan 2003, page 131. Asking 30$ per prop assy (blades on hub)
and 150$ for the engine starter (it has a built in glow plug generator with
lead / clip).

It might be that Dick Ivers' request for plans to make a box for airline
travel could be fulfilled quite simply unless he is looking for a elaborate
solution. The answer is cardboard! I have travelled by airline several
times using re-manufactured cardboard boxes to house my models with no
problems. I have a suspicion that the baggage handlers may even give
priority treatment to cardboard boxes since they always seem to be first off
the the luggage carrousel.
To start with, find high-quality double-thick cardboard, it should have a
hard surface on the outside. The closest place for me to look is at
automobile body shops. However, retail outlets for kitchen appliances or
furniture are also good. Select the cardboard so that its ribs will be
across the short direction of the box...never parallel to the long direction.
The box I am currently constructing for the King Orange trip is 52 x 10
(wide) x 8 (height). The cardboard must be at least 68 x 26. If there is a
crease, it can be incorporated into one of the angles. To make a crease
across the ribs, first indent the cardboard on the crease line-to-be with a
dull tool to create a fault. Place a long, straight, wooden board next to
the fault while the cardboard is bent. Weaken the basic crease a little by
bending the cardboard through 180 degrees so a right angle in the finished
product won't cause the box to bow. The end creases can be done similarly,
but creating a fault is not so important to bend with the ribs.
I slit the ends so the sides wrap around them. That is, the cuts are made
across the ribs. The cuts must be double wide because the width of the
material will not otherwise allow a right angle bend. Trim the
wrapped-around bend to remove the overlap.
To glue the box together, use a water-soluble contact cement. I use Elmer's
Neoprene based contact cement (it has a slightly blue color and doesn't smell
too bad). Give each surface to be joined a coat of cement using a scrap of
cardboard as a trowel. After it dries, the surfaces can be joined
permanently.
The lid of the box is made similarly as the base with full-depth sides. Use
the finished base as a measurement guide. The only change is that the end
wraps are to the long side. That is, the end cuts are made parallel to the
ribs.
The box can be enhanced with cardboard inserts at the ends to both support
the wing dihedral break and to provide a triangular storage compartment for
towreels and other necessary equipment. The inserts have ribs running
vertical to the height of the box and tabs bent to attach to both sides and
the base of the box. Use contact cement.
To hold two fuselages in place, hooks made of coat-hanger wire are epoxied to
the side of the base box to rubberband the fuselages to the side. Use a
cardboard doubler with ribs cross to the sides where the hooks go through.
I can make such a box in about 2 hours and it will last for at least a couple
of dozen flights.

Tails of Icarex woes

I finally got enough guts to cover a wing with icarex. I am now
fresh out of guts.
Things started out wrong when I sprayed my Kevlar Taco shells with white Top
Flight primer. I sprayed and sprayed and sprayed. Only Hung knows how much
useless weight I added 'cause I didn't really want to know.
I tried putting the Icarex on with Stix-It. Naturally that act dissolved the
primer and made for a real mess. Desperate, I then switched over to using my
slow-curing Maxi-Cure generic Hot Stuff stuff. I wrapped around four rib
panels at a time.... Starting at the trailing edge (inching along ever so
slowly to get the undercamber stuck good) At least the maxi-cure didn't
dissolve any more of the white stuff, but I quickly received an aesthetic
shock seeing that where I put a hot iron on to seal it down the primer
sometimes seeped through the Icarex cloth highlighting the ribs and other
irregularities. SHEESH!
After a couple of days of agonizing work I finally finished it up ... so to
speak.
It must set a new record for Ugly.
At least the wing will be serviceable. On the plus side it is so garnished
with garish florescent colors that it is enough of an eyesore to be visible
for miles. In fact it might even glow in the dark.... a help for feeble-eyed
timers and jaded chasers.
I think I could do better next time, but I have some serious reservations
about the stuff. it is in need of many coats of dope to seal it up since it
leaks like a sieve. And that means more damn weight. The rough texture may
be okay -- and even desirable for the top of the wing, but a rough bottom is
NOT, from what I have heard, ad infinitum in the past ... (from the famous
designer of the Komet: "The bottom of a wing should be so slick a fly would
slip on it") now, if I did the bottom in say, old original Mica Film (which
is tough stuff) and the top in icarex I still wonder how the texture would
take to all the dust and crappola attendant to the Colorado prairie -- or
even at that dirt vortex known as Lost Hills. Attempting to wipe it off may
end up in a futility of merely wiping the crud into the material. I'm pretty
sloppy, but I don't need my image tarnished even more by fielding airplanes

Now my buddy, Frank "Mad Dog" Mananno, tells me I should have used a Formica
cement. Thin it 50-50 with MEK, brush it on then let it dry for a day. Once
the goo has dried the Icarex can be adjusted in place .... then hit with the
iron to tack it down at strategic spots. And go from there. For this stuff a
heat gun/ blower is a must.... along with a multitude of sharp razor blades!

failure early evening, found by a farmer several weeks later some 70+
miles away. Map indicates it flew over Sutton Bank soaring site and
picked up the standing wave then later did a similar hop over the
Hambleton Hills - through the night, at very least.
