Blackmagic Timers and New Palms

Dear Roger,
My old m100 Palm started giving me problems. I am considering buying a
newer Palm model, however all the newer models are using a new type of
connector called as the "Universal Connector" that normally uses the USB
port of the computer rather than the Serial port. Can these new Palm
Pilots that use the "Universal Connector" be used with the Blackmagic
timers?=20
Specifications for the least expensive model "Zire" clearly indicate
that this unit can not be used with a Serial port. This unit however
does not use the "Universal Connector" anyway. The other newer models
come with the USB type "Universal Connector" but the Serial version of
the cable is available as an accessory.
Thanks!
Omer Erguner

I have seen that the Zire does have some serial capability, but I have
not tried to make it work. I hope to do that in due course.
I notice that Palm sells reconsitioned PP from their web site. They have
M100 and M105's for $79. This seems like a good deal for programming your

In response to the proposed rule change in F1J to a 5 second engine run and
the email from Reid Simpson. A 180 second max would be more acceptable than
a reduction in engine run. Best of all .... leave it alone.
The constant changing of the rules and regulations for the power events F1J
and F1P with respect to junior participation will only have the opposite
affect desired. It will only DISCOURAGE Junior participation.

At the European Champs last year in Hungary I did the supermax and dt´ed
down. Piece of cake. In one of the next rounds I dropped three seconds but
lost 120 seconds more from the supermax as a consequence of that strange
rule. I do not understand why I can fly five minutes with all that hard work
of retrieving etc. and then being stolen 120 seconds of really flown time.
Why do we have silly rules that we do not like?? It is bad psycologic .....

Dave Oldfield and my experiences were similar. Getting in the US wa no
problem. Getting out was another deal. The boxes were opened and examined
then sealed. We were not allowed to assist but at our request we added the
locks after inspection. The gear was AOK when inspected on our return. The
trick seems to be get the stuff on as hand baggage if you can.

You can blame me. The discussion of the super max was bringing the usual
heated discussion and blame was bring apportioned. Personally I think that
the super max is a contest killer, we should build to a climax not kill off
half the entry at the start. Starting a 14 round with a big flight on the
first day is wrong. If needed we could have at least waited until the next
day ala Beauvior in France. The Blame for the super max was laid at Ian
Kaynes door. When I questioned where the idea came from the information was
that the idea was from you! It would seem that the idea that you proposed
got bent out of shape in the debate. Maybe as you allude we need delegates
who fully understand the requirements and views of the flyers, then ideas
will not get twisted out of shape. The super max is what happens in
committees, one man's horse gets turned by the committee into a camel! For
my own part I would like to see a return to straight threes then, if
circumstances dictate/allow, move up to the five and seven earlier in the
event. Note if circumstances dictate/allow is the governing factor. You
and I know that the majority of European events would work under this
scenario, it is only at places like Lost Hills where we would get to the big
rounds earlier and there the field/weather is appropriate.
Michael J Woodhouse, Norwich, UK.
