Honda Cub Tires

The Honda Cub, officially the EZ-90, is very popular for chasing Free Flight
models and there are a lot of them out there. When it came time to buy tires
for mine the Honda dealer was not very helpful and basically said "can't get
tires for it". Both the front and back tire are an odd size and other
dealers were no help.
I went on the Web and found Discount Motorcycle Tires and Accessories and
found what I was looking for. The stock back tire is a 130/90-10 and the
stock front tire is a 100/90-12. They had and same size back tire and a
front in a 110/90-12 size that worked just fine. The tires are made by Cheng
Shin and are style C924. The front, P.N. 122-5680, and the back P.N.
122-5459 were $29.00 and $30.00 each. They arrived at my door 3 days after I
ordered them and the only other charge was actual shipping charges, about
$6.00. There tires are more of an on-off tread and are not like the stock
knobby tires but they are working great on paved roads, short grass and dirt.
I was also able to remove the old tires and mount the new ones myself using
nothing more than a big screwdriver and a hammer. The hardest part is
getting the bead on the rim, you need a lot of air.

Fw: MAXMEN comp & Thx

The MM started good, with weather fronts moving around, then came in
suddenly at 7th rd Sat, with unannounced wind & dust storm! This caused
cancelation of that rd & we all tried to pack & leave in most
undesirable conditions!
I don't recall worse wind & dust @ any comp(btw, the MM was my 400th
comp since I started flying FF in 1952).
I wonder if the shower drains @ the Lost Hills motels will clog up from
the gypsum & water mixture when all the people clean up?!
I started the 8th rd Sun during some raindrops and breeze,
but the light lift I thought was there, was(maybe)overpowered
by the water weight, so I did only 148 sec to drop out of the
clean group.
The rain cloud passed to east, followed by wind increasing
thru rd 9. I flew in a slight lull for a long max(almost to the
east road, Hollaway). The wind really picked up, worse than
Sat, with readings of 30 knots (!) seen, so the comp was ended then for
all but the clean crowd(about 12 in F1A).
The
I packed & came home, so you & I must wait for Roger M. to publish the
results on SEN.
I hope you have better weather for your contest & thank you again for
the fine writeup.
All the best fo luck,
Ciao,
Lee

Roger,

Always appreciate the analyses submitted by the SEN sportsmen, and of
course, your efforts in publishing same.

In the case of long motor runs using skinny motors with the same prop, the
prop efficiency normally increases as torque is reduced.

How can this be?

Well for starters, the rpm is essentially the same, this is even shown by
the data as motor run is proportional to turns. Thus RN is basically
constant. What changes is thrust which is roughly proportional to torque.
Hi thrust climbs at approx same (glide) speed but steeper than lower thrust.

So the RN is basically the same but the hi-thrust/tork has higher CL and
disk loading so induced losses are greater. These cause the blades to stall
at initial burst (even more with VP) which is not the case with the low
power version.

Still, the overall effect is small and the longer run will be lower by
approx the sink speed X added run time. Going from 40 to 80sec run will
cost ~ 40ft.

Those out to maximize performance at any price would do better to develop a
constant torque transmission than VP. Even 2 speed would be improvement as
it would make burst more efficient. Then campaign it before it gets banned.

Just doing my pot stirring duties,
H

Roger,

Just to clarify previous message:
Lest anyone be misled that I actually sprouted an original idea, rest
assured that Bill Bogart has been pushing fixed pitch rubber props for
years. He always thought it was better to climb fast with the burst rather
than stall out the prop with VP. I'm just the messenger.

More on Long F1B MOTOR RUNS

I have had some interesting correspondance with Klaus Saltzer, who claims a
better performance from his 12 strand model. He says it still reaches ca
40/50m at the end of the run, I believe.

I have revised the simulations with this new valuable data and run 35 and 30
gm models. Klaus' data was for 35gms. Here are the latest results. Any
comments, please?

30gm F1B Run time Flight time Max height
26std 40.7 363.4 100.6
24std 48.8 373.5 101.4
20std 72.2 385.4 98.3
18std 85.3 374.4 89.8
16std 103.9 372.3 83.5
14std 145.1 344.6 63.9
12std 185.2 311.2 46.7

35gmF1B Run time Flight time Max height
26std 47.5 420.0 116.1
24std 56.9 430.3 116.6
20std 84.3 448.0 114.2
18std 99.5 437.3 104.9
16std 121.2 431.4 96.6
14std 169.3 402.8 74.8
12std 216.1 363.2 54.5

We are both interested in contacting Zilberg in Russia. He was of course
flying a very long run F1B at the WC. Does anyone have an email address. I
believe he speaks German but not English so anyone who can get him to share
some thoughts and data would be very helpful. Perhaps Jean Wantzenriether
could help as I know he speaks German ! ;-))

I still have my doubts about the ultimate usefulness of these very long run
models but it seems that ca 20/22 strands might be well worth investigating
if the latest data is any where near real life.

Twin contra-rotating props
==========================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Reference Jim O'Rweilly's comment re the above contra-rotating props. If you
set them up to turn DOWN in the centre, it is like putting a prop on
BACKWARDS on a Powered model(Diesel or glow). The reduction in thrust is
very noticeable. I had tried both during the early development of the
MIG?NON twin but due to other considerations, did not realise the importance
of this fact. It was only when I got the ship flying more or less like a
"normal" CDH that I could try both rotations, when it became VERY clear that
turning up in the centre very much superior. Previously, I had also tried
props turning in the same direction i.e., both to the right as is usual, and
the ship would fly in a curve to the right BUT with a marked steep bank to
the right as well. Not very conducive to a high climb, wouldn't you say?
There also appears to be a marked tendency for the ship with contra props to
fly with this bank as well, so you add more downnthrust on the right prop
which counters this bank and then adjust the rudder to produce a fine LEFT
hand climb, steep turning to the LEFT while rolling to the right at the
same time. VERY SAFE. The ship seems to fly in a groove and seems to be
quite difficult to upset. For more info on the development if this twin CDH,
see "VOL LIBRE" published by Andre Schandel. He's at 16 Chemin de
Beulenwoerth, 67000 STRASBOURG-ROBERTSAU, FRANCE. You cann also obtain
copied from Peter Brocks, 9031 East Paradise Drive, 85260 Scottsdale,
Arizona. He's the USA rep. for the magazine. The two issues with articles
are VL118 and 132 if my memory serves me right. One final point. If you fly
contra props on full turns with No differntial down thrust, the the ship
will do a fine wing over and crash into the ground. Not very nice. Mike S.

Left or right turn

In response to Toto's comments about it not mattering whether your prop =
turns right or left, I'd just lilke to say that of course it matters very =
much. Notwithstanding the contrarotating issue, left turning props are =
more in tune with the natural flow of the universe and are more likely to =
meld with the ebb and flow of butterflies wings. My only concern is that =
others will discover the symbiosis and start a movement to have them =
banned.

Cyber Gremlin hits Dilly

Roger,

A cyber-gremlin seems to have got at the prices for the BMFA Free
Flight Forum Reports quoted in my SEN issue676 item on F1E articles. The
correct prices are 9.50 pounds sterling for the 1990 edition and 9.00
pounds sterling for the 2001.

Apologies.

Martin
