'Great Grape Gathering' - Geneseo, NY
======================================

The annual 'Great Grape Gathering' contest, joint-hosted this year by SAM86
(Ottawa) and the Western New York FF Society, was held at Geneseo, New York
June 14-16 inclusive.

Attendance was curtailed by very poor weather beforehand with scary
forecasts which led to a number of last-minute motel/hotel cancellations,
and the actual flying activities were severely hindered by wind and rain
over the three contest days. However, am posting brief results in the hope
that anyone within reach of Geneseo (or even out of customary reach - Jim
Bethea came up from Lousiana) will take heart and join us next year.

Unfortunately, we had lots of bottles left to sell off afterwards - please
come along next year and take some of it off our hands?

BlackMagic Update
=================

A new version of the PalmPilot program is available. This version
is designed to support the latest 2 servo timers.
It is backwards compatible with older timers.
It provides increased timer diagnostics and information.

Existing owners of BlackMagic Timers can request a free version by
e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

In addition some F1A sportsmen have been using Hall Effect devices as
switches instead of reed or mechanical devices. These behave similar to a
reed switch in that they are actuated by a magnet. The Hall Effect device is
a tranistor that swithes depending on a magnetic field. The advantage
is that they have no moving mechanical parts and can easily be protected
from dust and moisture. As with reed switches some set up is required
to position the magnet on the tow hook the right distance
from the Hall Effect transistor. They do require 3 wires, rather
than two with a conventional switch to go to the switch.
The device should be mounted in the fuselage and the magnet on the
tow hook. This avoids having flexing wires and joints. Existing BlackMagic
timers can be retro fitted to use these devices. This can be done by the
user. With future timers this will be an option.
